Lab Assignment
Lab Assignment
1. Please use the structural analysis and design software SPACE GASS to model and
solve the two assignment questions. For each question, you have two options, but
you need to take one option only (you can use another option for practice,
but just report one in your submission).
If you take a wrong value for P in a question, you may lose at least 50%
marks of that question.
3. Your submission must be a single PDF file, original questions, screen shots
of the modelled structures and analysis results should be included as shown in the
enclosed two examples. This lab assignment is to be submitted through Moodle
by 8.00pm on Friday 12 July 2024, Week 7.

For the pin-joined truss shown below, find the reactions and determine the axial force in
all the members. All the members are made of steel with young’s modulus of 200GPa
and have a square cross-section with side length of 200mm.

Option 1: For the steel beam shown below, find the support reactions and draw the
shear force and bending moment diagrams indicating all the critical values with their
positions. Young’s modulus of steel is 200GPa and the cross-section of the beam is
square with side length of 150mm.

Question: For the beam shown in Figure, it carries a uniformly distributed load of 10
kN/m and a concentrated load of 15 kN at D, calculate the reactions at B and C and draw
the shear force and bending moment diagrams of the whole beam indicating all the
critical values with their positions.
