SUBMITTED BY: SUBMITTED TO:
BIRENDRA KUMAR YADAV ER. PRADIP PAUDYAL

SUBMITTED FOR THE PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE

ASSIGNMENT OF MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM
(MIT)

DATE: 20 MAY 2024

1. Prepare a report of 5-10 pages on the topic "Network Design Procedure" considering
the attached materials.

"Network Design Basics" provides a comprehensive overview of essential concepts related to

network design, focusing on the distribution layer, access layer, security considerations, and
routing protocols. The document delves into topics such as limiting the scope of network failure,
traffic filtering at the distribution layer, redundancy strategies, access layer design considerations,
VLANs, QoS mechanisms, WAN technologies, MPLS, VPNs, and redundancy with backup links.
It also covers practical activities and interactive exercises to reinforce the understanding of
network design principles. Given the extensive content covered in the document, summarizing it
in 10 pages would involve condensing each section into concise points while ensuring the key
information is retained.

1. Introduction to Network Design Concepts

 Brief overview of the importance of network design.

 Explanation of the hierarchical design model and the roles of distribution, access,
and core layers.

2. Distribution Layer Functions

 Discussion on limiting the scope of network failure and the use of redundant
cabling and devices.

 Illustration of protection against single device failures and the concept of switch
block deployment.

3. Traffic Filtering and ACLs

 Overview of access control lists (ACLs) for filtering network traffic.

 Explanation of standard and extended ACLs, complex ACLs, and the placement
of ACLs within the network.
4. Routing Protocols and Route Summarization

 Importance of route summarization at the distribution layer.

 Advantages of route summarization, supported protocols, and the benefits of

classless routing protocols.

5. Access Layer Design Considerations

 Role of the access layer in controlling user access and managing traffic.

 Physical considerations, wiring closets, and the impact of converged networking

at the access layer.

6. VLANs and QoS Mechanisms

 Explanation of VLANs, traffic segregation, and the need for IP addressing

considerations.

 Overview of QoS mechanisms for providing secure and predictable services.

7. WAN Technologies and MPLS

 Overview of WAN technologies like DSL, Metro Ethernet, and MPLS.

 Explanation of MPLS technology, its benefits, and integration over existing

infrastructures.

8. VPN Connectivity and Redundancy

 Introduction to VPNs, their use for remote connectivity, and the concept of virtual
connections.

 Importance of redundancy on WAN links, backup link strategies, and ensuring

high availability.
9. Interactive Activities and Labs

 Summary of interactive activities related to ACLs, route summarization, VLAN

monitoring, and WAN/VPN connectivity.

 Importance of hands-on labs for practical application of network design concepts.

10. Conclusion and Key Takeaways

 Recap of the main points covered in the document.

 Emphasis on the significance of network design principles for building efficient and
reliable networks.

Requirements that may impact the entire network include:

 Adding new network applications or making major changes to existing ones

 Improving the efficiency of network addressing or routing protocols
 Integrating new security measures
 Adding new network services such as voice, content networking, or storage networking
 Relocating servers to a data center

On the other hand, requirements that may only affect a portion of the network include:

 Improving internet connectivity and adding bandwidth

 Updating access layer LAN cabling
 Providing redundancy for key services
 Supporting wireless access in defined areas

Upgrading WAN bandwidth

 Failure to correctly scope the project can lead to significant increases in the cost and
time required to implement the new network design. By carefully identifying the areas
of impact, the network designer can ensure that the project remains within the original
estimate and timeline.
Selecting Network Devices

 The selection of core network infrastructure devices, such as switches and routers, is a
critical task in the network design process. While the choice of these devices may
appear straightforward, there are many different models available, each with varying
numbers of ports, forwarding rates, and unique feature support.

 The network designer must carefully evaluate the capabilities of different switch and
router models to ensure they meet the specific requirements of the new network
design. Factors such as performance, scalability, and feature set must be considered to
ensure the selected devices can effectively support the desired functionality and growth
of the network.

Conclusion

Designing an effective and efficient network is a complex process that requires a structured
approach and careful consideration of both business and technical requirements. By following
the key steps outlined in this report - identifying network requirements, characterizing the
existing network, designing the network topology and solutions, and accurately scoping the
project - network designers can ensure the resulting network architecture meets the
fundamental design goals of scalability, availability, security, and manageability.

Ultimately, the success of a network design project relies on the network designer's ability to
work closely with the customer, understand the business objectives, and translate those into a
robust and adaptable network infrastructure. By following the network design procedure
outlined in this report, organizations can position their networks to support the evolving needs
of the business and maintain a competitive advantage in the ever-changing digital landscape
