Introduction:

Medium

• The information can be analog or digital. Analog information can be voice,

picture (or) music.
• Digital (discrete) information can be binary coded number, alpha numeric
, graphic symbols, database information etc.,
• But the information can not be transmitted as it is. It should be converted
into electrical signals and then modulated.
• Modulation can be analog modulation techniques such as Amplitude
Modulation (AM), Frequency Modulation (FM) and Phase Modulation (PM).

transmission
medium
• In this system digital pulses are transmitted between two (or) more points in a
communication systems.
• The original source information can be in digital (or) analog form.
• If it is in the digital form then it should be applied as it is, but if it is in the analog
form then it is converted into digital form with the help of an analog to digital
converter.
• The digital signal is then transmitted over a suitable transmission medium and
received by a receiver.
• The digital signal is converted into analog signal using digital to analog converter.
Advantages of Digital Communication
• It is fast and easier.
•The messages can be stored in the device for longer times, without being
damaged.
• Digital Communication can be done over large distances through internet.
• It provides facilities like video conferencing which save a lot of time, money and
effort.

Disadvantages of Digital Communication

• It is unreliable as the messages cannot be recognized by signatures.
Digital Modulation Techniques
There are 3 basic digital modulation techniques for converting
digital data to analog signals.
1. Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK)
2. Frequency Shift Keying (FSK)
3. Phase Shift Keying (PSK)
1. Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK):

• If the amplitude of the carrier is varied proportional to the modulating signal

(i.e message signal (or) information signal), ASK is produced.
The amplitude difference of carrier signal is given.

2. Frequency Shift Keying (FSK):

• If the frequency of the carrier is varied proportional to the modulating signal

(i.e message signal (or) information signal), FSK is produced.
The frequency difference of carrier signal is given.
3. Phase Shift Keying (PSK):

• If the frequency of the carrier is varied proportional to the modulating signal

(i.e message signal (or) information signal), PSK is produced.

The frequency difference of carrier signal is given.
