a) St Gowan Head Pt (37) :- 2590 ( C )
b) Caldey Island Lt Ho :- 0790 ( C )
Same time the vessel observes St Gown Lt Vessel 300 on her Starboard bow. At 1930 hrs
she observes same Lt Vessel 600 on her Stbd bow .Find position of the vessel and course

Lat 510 12.5’N, Long 0640 40’ W) , 2100 hrs :- 0830(T),2130hrs 1210 (T) ,2148 hrs 1390 (T)
.AT 2130 hrs same light ho was 8.4n.moff. If the current remained same throughout ,
find the Course to steer and engine speed required to reach Port Talbot Pilot station
(510 29’ N;0040 00’W) at 0100 hrs next day.ANS:- CTS :- 0730 (T) ,Eng spd :- 12.6 kts.

Q 6. A vessel Steering a certain course observes following bearings at 1900 hrs
Govan’s Head Point (37) (510 35.8’ N, 0040 55.4’ W) -- 2570 ( C )
Caldey Is Lt (510 37.9’ N, 0040 41’ W ) --- 0770 ( C )
Same time i.e at 1900 hrs St Govan Lt Vessel(510 30.6’ N, 0040 59.7’ W) was observed
300 on Starboard bow. At 1930 hrs finds the same Lt Vessel 60 0 on her Starboard bow
.Find the position of the vessel at 1900 hrs and course steered by the vessel. E spd 12

Q 7. At 0800 hrs a Vessel observes vertical Sextant Angle of Lundy Island North Lt Ho( 51 0 12’
N, 0040 40.6’ W) charted Height 50m ,to be 00 20.5’ .I.E 2.0’ On the arc ,when it was due
East. Find course to steer from this position to have St Gowan Lt Vessel( 510 30.5’ N,
0040 49.5’ W) right ahead when it is 4.0 miles off, if the current was assumed to be
setting 2500(T) at 3.5 kts. At 0920 hrs St Gowan Lt Vessel was observed to bear 3260(T)
X 4.0’. Find the correct Set and Rate of current. Eng Spd :- 12 kts.ANS:- CTS:- 3530(T),
Actual set and rate of current :- 2560(T) X 2.5 kts.
Q 8. A vessel observes Caldey Is Lt Ho( 510 38’ N, 0040 41’ W) to bear 2700(T) at 0400 hrs. The
visibility then becomes very poor. Find safe courses to steer to arrive at Port Talbot Pilot
Station ( 510 29.0’ N, 0040 00’ W),if current was setting 0500(T) at 2 kts.At what time
should the vessel make the final alteration of course. Eng Spd :-12 kts ANS:- 1880(T),
0960(T), Time:- 0453 hrs.
Q 9. A ship is steering a course 0300(T) at 12 kts observes Lundy Island South Light to bear
3520(T) at 1600 hrs, same light bore 2840(T) at 1620 hrs. At 1700 hrs Bull Point Lt Ho
bore 1250(T) .The current was known to be setting 0700(T) ,Find ship’s position at 1700
hrs and rate of current. ANS:- 510 16.7’ N,0040 21.9’ W, Rate of current 4.2 kts.
Q 10. While steering 3000(T) at 14 kts observed Caldey Is Lt ( 510 38’ N, 0040 41’ W ) bore
3400(T) at 1200 hrs ,At 1250 hrs Old Castle Hd (65) Pt ( 51038.2’ N,0040 47’ W) bore
0000(T) and at 1310 hrs Stack Pole( 510 37’ N, 0040 53.6’ W) bore 0000(T) X 6.7’ .Find the
following :-i) Position of the vessel at 1200 hrs ii) CMG,SMG iii) Set and Rate of current.
ANS:- i) 510 19.0’ N, 0040 30.3’ W, ii) 306.50(T), SMG:- 15.6 kts iii) 3500(T) , Rate of
current :- 2.4 kts.(CH MATE)
Q 11. A vessel was at anchor in position Lat:- 510 11.0’ N, 0040 49.4’ W .At 2300 hrs she picked
up her anchor and sailed on a course 1310(T) .At 2320 hrs South Lundy Island Light was
first sighted and at 2350 hrs North Lundy Island Light was just obscured. Find, CMG,
SMG, Engine speed and position of the vessel at 2350 hrs , if current was setting SW’ly
at 3 kts throughout. ANS:- CMG:- 1460(T) ,SMG:- 9.1 kts, E.spd :- 9.0 kts.
Q 12. At 1900 hrs a vessel while steering a Course of 0400 (T) at 12 kts observed Hart Land
Point Lt Ho (510 01.5’ N,0040 31.5’ W ) bore due East. At 1945 hrs the vessel altered
course to PORT to avoid collision and at 2020 hrs observes Lundy Island South Light ( 51 0
09’ N,0040 39’ W) bore 2520 (T) and same time Lundy Island North Light (Lat 510 12.5’N,
Long 0640 40’ W) bore 2690 (T) . The current was setting 1200 (T) at 3 kts . If at 1900 hrs
vessel’s position was within 30 m and 50 m contour line ,find:-
i) Position of the vessel at 1900 Hrs and 1945 hrs
ii) The course that the vessel was steering from 1945 hrs and 2020 hrs. ANSWER :-
1900 HRS POSITION LAT :- 510 01.2’ N, LONG:- 0040 36.4’ W/ 1945 HRS
POSITION LAT :- 510 07’ N, 0040 24’ W. CTS :- 3310 (T)
Q 13. At 2100 hrs a vessel in position 3 miles North of Horse Shoe Rocks buoy(51 0 15’
N,004013.5’ W) experiencing a current setting NW’ly steams as follows:-
2100 --2120 Course steered unknown
2120---2150 Course steered 0700(T)
2150---2205 Course steered 3400(T)
At the end of this steaming , she observes Scar weather Lt Vsl (51 0 27’ N,0030 57’ W)
bearing 1000(T) distance 10 mies, E.Spd:-12 Kts, find :-
a) Course steered from 2100 hrs to 2120 hrs.

Q 14. A vessel steering a course 0200(T) at 12 kts Lundy Island South Light (510 09’ N, 0040 39’
W ) was first sighted in Meteorological visibility of 5 miles at 0400 hrs, bearing 055 0 (T)
.The same light was obscured for 1 hour from 0430 hrs to 0530 hrs ,find the following:-
a) Position of the ship at 0530 hrs.
b) Set and Drift of current experienced.(H.E= 18 m) ANS :- a) 510 18’ n, 040 41.7’ W, b)

Q 15. At 2100 hrs St Govan’s Head (510 35.8’ N, 0040 55.4’ W ) bore 3300( C ) and St Govan lt
Vessel (510 30.6’ N, 0040 59.7’ W ) bore 2500 ( C ), same time distance from Caldey
Island light(510 37.9’ N, 0040 41’ W) was found to be 9.0 n.m. Find the course to steer at
12 kts to have Helwick light Vessel right ahead when it is 8 n.m off , current was setting
S’ly at 4 kts, also find time when Helwick light vessel will be abeam . ANS :- CTS;- 0850(T)

Q 16. At 0530 hrs a vessel was in position with Lundy Island South bearing 030 0(T) and 6’ off.
She steered a certain course and her engine speed was 9 kts. After one hour she altered
her course to due north and increased her speed to 12 kts. At 0700 hrs ,the bearing of
Lundy Island North was observed to be 1200(T).The current in the area was setting
3300(T) at 3.5 kts.Find her position at 0700 hrs and initial course steered by the vessel.
