CONNECTORS
Connectors are words used to combine two or more sentences
into one. They are used to:
• join similar sentences, e.g. and, neither…nor
Examples
Sally is playing basketball. Benny is playing basketball.
Sally and Benny are playing basketball.
Joanne is not sleeping. Her sisters are not sleeping.
Neither Joanne nor her sisters are sleeping.
• show contrast, e.g. but, however, although, yet
Examples
Fiona is quiet but her brother is not.
Although she was tired, she stayed up to usher in the New Year.
• show choice, e.g. either…or, neither…nor, or
Examples
We can either go to the Indian restaurant or the Western one.
Take this dress or buy a new one.
• show reason, e.g. because, as, for, since
Examples
I carry an umbrella because it is going to rain soon.
Get some rest since you are tired.
