➢ An open set of radius r and center x0 is the set of all points x
such that |x-x0|<r.

➢ In one-space, the open set is an open interval. In two-space,

the open set is a disk. In three-space, the open set is a ball.

➢ The complement of an open set is a closed set.

➢ It is possible for a set to be neither open nor closed, e.g., half-

closed interval (0,1].

• In elementary geometry, a polytope is a geometric object with "flat"
sides.

• It is a generalization in any number of dimensions of the three-

dimensional polyhedron.

• Polytopes may exist in any general number of dimensions n as an n-

dimensional polytope or n-polytope.

• A polygon is a 2-dimensional figure with flat 1-D sides such as a triangle.

• A polyhedron is a 3-dimensional object with flat 2-D faces such as a cube.

• Thus polygons and polyhedrons are both polytypes.
