Sub: Colour Scheme for painting of Residential & Service building

1. A large number of Residential & Service Buildings and Structures are regularly
painted with paints of specified colours to enhance their life as well as improve
aesthetic view of buildings.
2. The buildings/structures can be classified in accordance to their intended use as
follows:
(i) Office premises including Headquarters, Divisional and Other Office Buildings,
Level Crossing Gate Lodge, Watch Huts
(ii) Residential premises including Officer’s Quarters, Subordinate’s Quarters,
Club Building
(iii) Station premises including Signal Cabin, Station Building, Rest Houses,
Holiday Home, Railway Institute, Railway Community Center etc.
(iv) Platform Shelters
(v) Steel structures including Foot Over Bridges (FOB), Road Over Bridges
(ROB), Rail Under Bridges (RUB), Goods Sheds, Small Workshops, Water
Tanks & Staging, Power Houses and Large Workshops.
3. The instruction for colours for timber, steel works and wall in general has been
prescribed in Para 210 of Indian Railway Works manual (IRWM). As per IRWM,
Principal Chief Engineer is authorized to issue detailed guidelines for colour scheme
to be adopted for buildings & structures.
4. There is need to issue detailed instruction for colour scheme for painting of various
structures. Therefore, this PCE Circular is being issued for guidelines for painting of
various structures in Western Railway. The colours of buildings & structures shall be
painted as per tables mentioned below.

Note: Paint of approved brand shall be used in Doors and Windows and

4.5. Buffer Stops

5. Colour scheme for painting of Heritage building shall be as per advice of Architect.
6. All Stations (except NSG-1), Cabins, LCs & Service buildings located in a section
(as defined in TMS), should have the same Colour combination. Similarly, same
colour combination should be adopted in a colony.
7. All exposed steel work should be provided with primary coat of red lead and
appropriate finishing coats. CGI sheets should not be painted unless they are in
corrosion prone area.
8. If Division/Workshop wants to adopt other Colour scheme, the proposal duly
approved by DRM/CWM should be sent to HQ for approval.
