1. Assertion and Reason Type Questions:

Note: In the following questions a statement of assertion followed by a statement of reason is given.
Choose the correct answer out of the following choices.
(A) Both assertion and reason are correct statements, and reason is the correct explanation of
theassertion.
(B) Both assertion and reason are correct statements, but reason is not the correct explanation of
theassertion.
(C) Assertion is correct, but reason is wrong statement.
(D) Assertion is wrong but reason is correct statement.
(E) Both assertion and reason are wrong statements.

i. Assertion : Molarity of a solution changes with temperature.

Reason : Molarity is a colligative property.
ii. Assertion : When NaCl or CaCl2 is added to water, a depression in freezing point is observed.
Reason : The lowering of vapour pressure of a solution causes depression in the freezing point.

iii. Assertion: Vapour pressure of a solution is more that of the pure solvent.
Reason: The solute particles occupy certain area of the surface of the solution whichreduces
the amount of vapour.
iv. Assertion : Benzene –Toluene mixture forms ideal solution at low concentrations.
Reason : Components with structural similarity forms ideal solution in general.
2. Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:
The properties of the solutions which depend only on the number of solute particles but
noton the nature of the solute are called colligative properties. Relative lowering in vapour
pressure is also an example of colligative properties. For an experiment, sugar solution is
prepared for which lowering in vapour pressure was found to be 0.061 mm of Hg. (Vapour
pressure of water at 200C is 17.5 mm of Hg)
The following questions are multiple choice questions. Choose the most appropriate answer:
a. Relative lowering of vapour pressure for the given solution is
(a) 0.00348 (b) 0.061 (c) 0.122 (d) 1.75
b. The vapour pressure (mm of Hg) of solution will be
(a) 17.5 (b) 0.61 (c) 17.439 (d) 0.00348
c. Mole fraction of sugar in the solution is
(a) 0.00348 (b) 0.9965 (c) 0.061 (d) 1.75

d. The vapour pressure (mm of Hg) of water at 293K when 25 g of glucose is dissolved in 450 g of
water is
(a) 17.2 (b) 17.4 (c) 17.120 (d) 17.02
3.Multiple choice questions:

A. Considering the formation, breaking and strength of hydrogen bond, predict which of the following
mixtures will show a positive deviation from Raoult's law?
(a) Methanol and acetone (b) Chloroform and acetone
(c) Nitric acid and water (d) Phenol and aniline
Answer: (a) Methanol and acetone
B. Which of the following aqueous solutions should have the highest boiling point?
(a) 1.0 M NaOH (b) 1.0 M Na2SO4 (c) 1.0 M NH4NO3 (d) 1.0 M KNO3
C. The values of Van’t Hoff factors for KCl, NaCl and K2SO4, respectively are .
(a) 2, 2 and 2 (b) 2, 2 and 3 (c) 1, 1 and 2 (d) 1, 1 and 1
D. Osmotic pressure of a solution is 0.0821 atm at a temperature of 300 K. The concentration
inmoles/litre will be
(a) 0.33 (b) 0.666 (c) 0.3 × 10-2 (d) 3
4. Short Question answers:
(a) Why are aquatic species more comfortable in cold water in comparison to warm water?
(b) Henry’s law constant for two gases is 21.5 and 49.5 atm, which gas is more soluble?
(c) What role does the molecular interaction play in solution containing chloroform and acetone?
(d) Calculate the molarity of pure water (d = 1 g mL–1).
(e) Two liquids A and B boil at 1450C and 1900C respectively. Which of them has higher vapour
pressure at 800C ?

5. Numericals:
(a) 30 g of urea (M = 60 g mol-1) is dissolved in 846 g of water. Calculate the vapour pressure of
water for this solution if vapour pressure of pure water at 298 K is 23.8 mm Hg.
(b) 100 mg of a protein is dissolved in just enough water to make 10.0 ml of solution. If this
solution has an osmotic pressure of 13.3 mm Hg at 25°C, what is the molar mass of the
protein? (R = 0.0821 L atm mol-1 K-1 and 760 mm Hg = 1 atm.)
(c) A solution prepared by dissolving 1.25 g of oil of winter green (methyl salicylate) in 99.0 g of
benzene has a boiling point of 80.31°C. Determine the molar mass of this compound.

becomes 2.9 kPa at 298 K. Calculate (i) the molecular mass of solute and (ii) vapour pressure
of water at 298 K.
