Internal Assessment

Dilan Litner Butrón

What is the environmental impact on the air produced by

the aviation industry in Bolivia and what are the possible
solutions or mitigation measures that could reduce this
impact?

International Baccalature ESS

BOLIVIA
AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF BOLIVIA
JUSTIFICATION

Because choosing ESS for our internal assessment, I immerse myself in the study of
Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS), where my personal and academic passions
come together. This discipline, which explores the interaction between the environment
and humanity, represents an opportunity towards a deep understanding of the challenges
we face as a society in an increasingly interconnected and technologically advanced
world.

The choice to undertake an Internal Assessment at ESS arises from a personal need to
address environmental issues in Bolivia and the passion I have for aviation because I
graduated as a private pilot. From extreme temperature increases to pollution generated
by transportation, these challenges cannot be separated from the social, economic and
political problems that perpetuate them. This AI represents an opportunity to deepen our
understanding and see the realities of these issues and explore how we can move
towards more productive and safer solutions.

By conducting this research, I not only seek to expand my academic knowledge, but
also develop greater awareness towards my personal study and towards the
environmental problems that affect Bolivia and the world. My goal is to understand the
problems and identify solutions that can contribute to positive change in my local
environment and help others.

Additionally, this research gives me the opportunity to merge my personal interests with
a broader interest. Through rigorous research, on the one hand I had the opportunity to
learn more about the components thanks to help from the airport staff. I hope to
strengthen my academic skills and also develop an informed and committed vision that
inspires me to comply with environmental sustainability for my future actions.

This Internal Assessment at ESS represents an exciting opportunity to explore topics I

am passionate about, the environment and general aviation, while contributing to
understanding and addressing contemporary environmental and social challenges. By
uniting my personal interests with a meaningful academic purpose, I hope to not only
enrich my own understanding, but also constructively contribute to positive change in
our country and the world. In conclusion, I wanted to do this internal assessment 70%
theoretical and 30% practical in order to achieve the expected results.

AIM AND APPROACH

The main objective of this Internal Assessment is to investigate and analyze in depth
how the effect of aviation gasoline in Bolivia affects the greenhouse system and
contributes to global warming. To address this objective, information about airplane
flying was obtained and the calculation of CO2 production was obteindes by the web
page MY CLIMATE (https://co2.myclimate.org/en/portfolios?calculation_id=6969904)
This approach will allow a complete understanding of the emission of greenhouse gases
by the aviation gasoline in our country, as well as the economic and environmental
implications of these emissions.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The greenhouse effect is a natural process crucial to maintaining life on Earth. It works
as follows: when solar radiation reaches the Earth's atmosphere, part of it is absorbed by
the Earth's surface and some is reflected back into space. However, greenhouse gases in
the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide
(N2O), trap some of this reflected radiation, warming the atmosphere and the surface.
land. This process is essential to maintaining an average temperature on Earth's surface
that is suitable for life as we know it.

However, in recent decades, human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels for
power generation, industry and transportation, have increased the concentration of
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to unprecedented levels. This has led to a
significant increase in the greenhouse effect and, as a result, global warming.
(LINKS)

Global warming has a series of negative impacts on the environment and living beings.
For example, melting ice caps and glaciers contribute to sea level rise, which threatens
coastal communities and coastal ecosystems. In addition, global warming can lead to
changes in weather patterns, such as more intense storms, prolonged droughts and
extreme heat waves, which can have serious consequences for agriculture, water
availability and biodiversity.

Airplanes contribute significantly to the problem of global warming by emitting large

amounts of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx), and
water vapor, during the fuel combustion process. In addition, airplanes emit other air
pollutants, such as soot and sulfur oxides, which can also have negative impacts on the
environment and human health. Therefore, studying aircraft pollution and its
contribution to the greenhouse effect is crucial to addressing the problem of climate
change and seeking sustainable solutions for the aviation industry.

Although aviation accounts for approximately 2-3% of global carbon dioxide (CO2)
emissions related to human activity, this percentage can be misleading when other
factors are considered. For example, greenhouse gas emissions from airplanes may have
a more significant impact on climate change due to their release at high altitudes, where
they have an amplified effect on the atmosphere.

In addition to CO2, airplanes emit other gases and particles, such as nitrogen oxide
(NOx), water vapor, soot and sulfur oxides, which also contribute to global warming
and air pollution. These pollutants can have adverse effects on air quality, human health
and ecosystems, both locally and globally.

It is important to note that the aviation industry is experiencing steady growth due to
increased demand for air travel, which can lead to a significant increase in greenhouse
gas emissions if measures are not implemented to mitigate them. As awareness of
climate change and the need to reduce emissions increases, more sustainable
technologies and practices are being developed and applied in aviation, such as
improved fuel efficiency, development of aviation biofuels and research. of new
propulsion technologies.

In summary, although the percentage of emissions from aviation may seem relatively
low compared to other sources, its impact on climate change and air pollution should
not be underestimated. Addressing aviation pollution is crucial to mitigating
environmental impacts and protecting the health and well-being of people and
ecosystems.

CO2 emissions: Airplanes are responsible for 2% of global greenhouse emissions1.

Increase in emissions: It is estimated that by 2050, emissions produced by aviation
could increase between 300% and 700% compared to 20051.
Comparison with other means of transport: The aviation industry is responsible for 12%
of carbon dioxide emitted by means of transport, while land means produce 74%1.
Premature deaths: Airplane emissions cause 16,000 premature deaths each year due to
their impact on air quality
Main pollutants: Among the pollutants emitted during air operations are nitrogen oxides
(NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur oxides (SOx), unburned hydrocarbons and ozone

METHODOLOGY
Our work plan It will be based on data collection, data analysis, impact evaluation and
mitigation proposals against this pollution. We will use digital platforms from the
Bolivian fiscal oil fields and based on that we will put a more precise investigation that
will help us collect the other data to be able to complete the other subjective ones. This
topic interested us because we have great support for the aeronautical community and
also because we care about the environmental impact that can be had in a great future
and that great progress can be seen in the not distant future where the means of
transportation will be by air and our interest is how we could mitigate it.
