Input Devices-2

Digital camera
⚫ It is an input device that takes pictures digitally. Images
are stored as data on memory cards.
⚫ It has an LCD screen that allows users to preview and
review images.
Working of a digital camera
⚫ A digital camera takes a photograph by using sensors to
capture the light that comes in through the lens.
⚫ It then converts the light into binary numbers that are recorded
on backing storage.
⚫ This digital version of the photograph can then be displayed on
the small screen that is set into the camera.
⚫ A digital camera also has software that lets you delete
unwanted photos while they are still stored in the camera.
⚫ You can connect your camera to your PC and transfer your
photos across.
⚫ Once they are in the PC you can edit your photos further by
using a good graphics package.
Webcam
⚫ It is an input device connected to the computer and the
internet that captures still picture or motion video.
Scanner
⚫ It is an input device that reads an image and converts it
into a digital file.
⚫ A scanner is connected to a computer through USB.
⚫ There are different types of scanners:
⚫ Flatbed scanner – uses a flat surface to scan documents
⚫ Handheld scanner – the scanner is dragged over the page
to be scanned
Handheld scanner
⚫ It is used to scan physical documents into their digital
forms that can be stored, edited, transferred and emailed
digitally.
⚫ Their function includes moving them over the material
slowly from the top to bottom.
⚫ Experience is required to operate and handle the device
since it is very important to keep the scanner straight so
that a distortion-free scan is possible.
Flatbed scanner
⚫ A scanner that provides a flat, glass surface to hold a sheet
of paper, book or other object for scanning. The scan head
is moved under the glass.
⚫ Flatbed scanners often come with sheet feeders for
scanning multiple sheets of paper rather than one at a time.
Magnetic Ink Card Reader
(MICR)

⚫ MICR input device is generally used in banks as there are

large number of cheques to be processed every day.
⚫ The bank's code number and cheque number are printed
on the cheques with a special type of ink that contains
particles of magnetic material that are machine readable.
⚫ This reading process is called Magnetic Ink Character
Recognition (MICR).
⚫ The main advantages of MICR is that it is fast and less
error prone.
Optical Character Reader (OCR)

⚫ OCR computer input device is designed to convert the

scanned images of handwritten, typed or printed text into
digital text. It is widely used in offices and libraries to
convert documents and books into electronic files.
⚫ It processes and copies the physical form of a document
using a scanner. After copying the documents, the OCR
software converts the documents into a two-color (black
and white), version called bitmap
Cont…..
⚫ . Then it is analyzed for light and dark areas, where the
dark areas are selected as characters, and the light area is
identified as background.
⚫ It is widely used to convert hard copy legal or historic
documents into PDFs.
⚫ The converted documents can be edited if required like we
edit documents created in ms word.
Bar Code Readers

⚫ Bar Code Reader is a device used for reading bar coded

data (data in the form of light and dark lines).
⚫ Bar coded data is generally used in labelling goods,
numbering the books, etc.
⚫ It may be a handheld scanner or may be embedded in a
stationary scanner.
⚫ Bar Code Reader scans a bar code image, converts it into
an alphanumeric value, which is then fed to the computer
that the bar code reader is connected to.
MICROPHONE
⚫ The microphone is a computer input device that is used to
input the sound.
⚫ It receives the sound vibrations and converts them into
audio signals or sends to a recording medium.
⚫ The audio signals are converted into digital data and
stored in the computer.
⚫ The microphone also enables the user to telecommunicate
with others.
⚫ It is also used to add sound to presentations and with
webcams for video conferencing.
Optical Mark reader(OMR)
⚫ Optical Mark reading (OMR) is a method of entering data
into a computer system.
⚫ Optical Mark Readers reads pencil or pen marks made in
pre-defined positions on paper forms as responses to
questions or tick list prompts.
⚫ OMR is accomplished by using a hardware device
(scanner) that detects a reflection or limited light
transmittance on or through a piece of paper.
⚫ The marked responses are converted into binary form and
stored in the computer.
