Letters From Readers

The two letters from readers express discontent with the Ecuadorian government's handling of issues such as crime, the prosperity of certain members of the government, and the intention to turn the country into a branch of Venezuela or Cuba. A letter criticizes free housing and proposes that the government help people progress through their own efforts. The other letter points out that the results of the popular consultation did not show the great victory that the president predicted.

The letter to the reader, to the editor or to the management is a text that the reader sends to the director of a
specific written medium (newspaper or magazine), to make known some fact or to publicly express his or her
opinion on some topic, news, event. news or published article. It is associated with the discourse of the opinion
article to the extent that it presents a certain point of view without explicitly trying to convince the recipient. The
publication of that letter in the medium to which it has been sent depends exclusively on the editorial line of the
medium.

The letter addressed to the letters to the reader, to the editor or to the management section must be formal in
nature and must include an introduction, a communication and a closing.

The introduction contains the following elements:

 Letterhead: the identifying data of the person writing the letter: name, surname, full address and, sometimes,
DNI (CI) or passport and telephone number.
 Place and date: the city from which the letter is written, and the day, month and year of the communication.
 Inside address: the name of the newspaper or magazine, the address and the section to which it is directed.

The communication consists of the following parts:

 Greeting line: the most frequently used formula is Mr. Director or Mr. Director of... followed by the name of the
publication to which the letter is addressed.
 Body of the letter: the reader's opinion. It is frequently developed according to an argumentative structure:
presentation of the facts or reference to some current information, the reader's reasoned opinion, and
demands or proposals.
 Farewell: a brief greeting using some courtesy formula:
 Yours sincerely... Thank you for your attention...

The closing includes the signature, which is usually a mandatory requirement in this type of communications:

 Signature: signature of the sender.

 Clarification of the signature: full name of the signatory, to which their occupation or position can be added.

It is known that the Letters from Readers section is one of the most read in newspapers and is among those
preferred by readers.

If your letter were published, it will be read by a large number of people and will enhance the effect of your
message.

10 Tips on how to write

1. Be honest: The message must be in accordance with reality. It is essential to be truthful. Slander, never.
Speaking badly without need, either. It exposes the truth of the facts and when it is necessary to criticize a
person, it must be documented to prove the veracity of what is said.

2. Be brief: If your letter conforms to what the newspaper recommends (about 15 lines or 1,100 characters),
there is a greater chance that it will be selected and published. Try to summarize and concentrate your
arguments.

3. Be consistent: Even if your first letter is not published, continue writing. The letter has an important effect on
the writing of newspapers and if they publish one it will have a great impact among readers.

4. Be original: Make the effort to write in your own words. Newspapers are not likely to publish form letters.

5. All information: Sign the letter and include clarification of your name, address, telephone number and ID.
These are data required by newspapers to publish them.

6. Current Affairs: Choose the topic that is of interest to you, but keep in mind that if you write about current
affairs, and when the issue is still current, you will have a greater chance of having your letter published.

7. Praise: It is useful to criticize and protest, but never stop proposing solutions or praising another published
letter or an article or newspaper editorial that you liked.

8. Gentle: Courteous does not take away from bravery. Firm in principles, but soft in forms. Never resort to insult
or disqualification. You have to know how to say, but also know how to say it.

9. Precision: It is necessary to always stick to the truth and be very clear about the objective. If you can, have
someone read it before you send it to the newspapers.

10. Unite: There are many who think like you, but they are dispersed. Your letter can be a uniting element of will
and efforts to join in a common cause. Through the letter, you can establish very valuable relationships.

Practical ideas

 Take care of the shapes. Always use you and begin the letter with “Mr. Director.”
 Personalize. When referring to news or articles published in the newspaper, be sure to mention it. Keep in
mind that it is advisable to personalize the letter and write the name of the diary at the beginning.
 Also children and adolescents. Encourage your children, nephews or grandchildren to write to newspapers.
There is a greater chance that your letters will be published.
 Careful review. Keep in mind that it is always advisable to reread the letter two or three times to eliminate
errors or repetitions, achieve greater synthesis and precision in the ideas.

It is known to all that the facilities of said park are in a more than deplorable state of
abandonment. I do not know if it is the Department of Parks and Gardens, of the Municipality of
the Metropolitan District of Quito or the Provincial Council of Pichincha that should be responsible
for the maintenance of this public facility, but whoever it is is seriously failing in its responsibility,
since the park has months, perhaps years, without anyone having carried out any action to repair
or adapt the street furniture, as well as the garden area.
I would like to make public through these lines my most indignant complaint about the situation of
the playground in front of my house, on Alfonso Perrier street N21-140 between Ortiz and
Pallares, in the Ichimbía parish. I go there frequently with my children to make time between
leaving school and entering Theater School.
I hope, therefore, that this letter takes effect and the person responsible for the aforementioned
playground takes note and assumes his responsibility.
