KHULNA UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY

B.Sc. Engineering 4th Year 2nd Term Examination, 2020

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering
ECE 4203
(Telecommunication Engineering)

TIME: 1 hour 30 minutes FULL MARKS: 120

N.B. i) Answer TWO questions from each section in separate scripts.

ii) Figures in the right margin indicate full marks.

SECTION A
(Answer ANY TWO questions from this section in Script A)

1. a) What is the significance of sidetone in a telephone conversation? Describe the operation of (05+07)
a telephone circuit with sidetone coupling.
b) State the process of step-by-step switching technique to establish a connection for the (12)
number 4312.
c) Define (i) Tandem exchange (ii) Cost capacity index. (06)

2. a) Draw the functional block diagram of a common control switching system. (10)
b) Explain in brief the “Band separation” and “Choice of power levels” techniques for (12)
protection against talk-off in touch tone signaling system.
c) Draw the diagram of typical centralized SPC configuration. (08)

3. a) Differentiate between time-multiplexed time switching (TMTS) and time-multiplexed (10)

space switching (TMSS).
b) Mention the advantages of using diagonal cross-point switching. (08)
c) A three stage switching structure supports 128 inlets and 128 outlets. It is proposed to use (12)
16 first stage and third stage matrices.
(i) What are the number of switching elements in the network if it is non blocking?
(ii) At peak periods, the occupancy rate of an inlet is 20%. If the number of
switching elements required for non blocking operation is reduced by a factor
of 2, what is the blocking probability of the network?

SECTION B
(Answer ANY TWO questions from this section in Script B)

4. a) What is aliasing distortion? What is the minimum sampling frequency required for a signal (04+08)
with a frequency range of DC to 15 kHz if it is:
(i) band limited between 1kHz and 10kHz.
(ii) Passed through a low pass filter which has a cut off frequency of 5 kHz.

b) Define companding. If a minimum SQR of 33 dB is desired, how many bits per code word (02+04)
are required in a linearly quantized PCM system?
c) For the binary data pattern 010000011011101, sketch the coded waveform when the (12)
following coding schemes are used:
(i) Conventional bipolar
(ii) Manchester coding.

5. a) For a queuing system, show that 𝑃(𝑥) = 𝑁𝑁 (𝐴⁄ )𝑥 𝑃(0), where the symbols have their (12)
𝑁! 𝑁
usual meanings.
b) What are the signaling limits for an exchange? (08)
c) Draw the architecture of SS7. (10)

6. a) A subscriber loop of 18 km is to be supported from an exchange that uses a 40 v battery (10)

with a 400 Ω short-circuit protection resistance. Electronic telephones are used as the
subscriber instruments. Determine the wire gauge that needs to be used. Use table 6(a), if
necessary. [ Microphone needs 25 mA current]
b) Define ISDN. What are the services associated with the ISDN? (10)
c) Define Grade of service and Traffic intensity. (04+06)
A group of five trunks provides a grade of service of 0.02, when offered 10E of traffic.
(i) How much is the grade of service improved if one extra trunk is added to the
group?
(ii) How much does the grade of service deteriorate if one trunk is out of service?
