constructing the centres for the 6 mm diameter and 8 mm diameter holes.

Take Home Activity:

 A triangle ABC stands on side AB as base and has the following dimensions:
AB 89 mm, AC 76 mm, angle CAB 67½. Construct the triangle and draw the
inscribed circle.
 Construct a triangle ABC on AB as base with AB 70 mm, AC 57 mm, BC 76
mm and draw the circumscribing circle.
 Construct regular hexagons to the following dimensions: (a) 90 mm across
flats (b) 95 mm across corners.
 Construct a regular pentagon with sides 32 mm long.

3. Tangency
Studio Activity:
The following problems (Nos. 3 and 8) should be drawn full size. Construction lines
must not be erased and all centre lines must be shown as in the figures. Do not
dimension the drawings.

5
Engineering Drawing I (ME 211) Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Nigeria
Take Home Activity:
The following problems (Nos. 10 and 14) should be drawn half full size.
Construction lines must not be erased and all centre lines must be shown as in the
figures. Do not dimension the drawings.

Engineering Drawing I (ME 211) Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Nigeria
4. Dimensioning and Conventions
Studio Activity:
Reproduce the drawing below with dimensions. The method of dimensioning a
circular component having a screw thread at one end is shown.

Take Home Activity:

Dimension the bracket assuming it to be machined where indicated. The four holes
are drilled.

7
Engineering Drawing I (ME 211) Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Nigeria
5. Orthographic Projections
Studio Activity:
Draw full size in First Angle projection the following views of the wall bracket
shown: (a) Elevation in direction of arrow T; (b) End view in direction of arraw S;
(c) Plan view projected from view (a).

Take Home Activity:

8
Engineering Drawing I (ME 211) Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Nigeria
 Draw full size in Third Angle projection the following views of the guide
below: (a) Elevation in direction of arrow T; (b) End view in direction of
arraw S; (c) Plan view projected from view (a).

 Draw full size in First Angle orthographic projection of the cast bracket
shown below

6. Isometric Projections
Studio Activity:
Make an isometric drawing of the component with the axis horizontal.

1
Engineering Drawing I (ME 211) Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Nigeria
Take Home Activity:
 Orthographic views of a machine part are given in Fig. Ex. 12.2. Draw, full
size, an isometric view to the dimensions given. (Do not show hidden edges.)

 Fig. Ex. 12.3 shows two machined parts. Part B, which is unfinished, is to be
fitted into Part A. Draw an isometric view of Part B when it has been shaped
to fit into part A. (Note that face C is to be flush with face D. The insert
shows the position of point E on the finished drawing.)

7. Sectioning
When a number of adjacent parts are to
be sectioned, the hatching lines should
be drawn alternately in different directions
and, where necessary, with a varied spacing
between the lines as shown.

Studio Activity:
Using the Third Angle projection draw the given plan view of the bearing below and
replace the given front elevation by a sectional front elevation on AA. Add a
sectional end view on BB.

1
Engineering Drawing I (ME 211) Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Nigeria
Take Home Activity:
Fig. Ex. 19.3 shows two views, in Third Angle projection, of a cast iron bracket.
Draw the following full size views in Third Angle projection: (a) a sectional
elevation on the plane BB; (b) a sectional end elevation on the plane AA; (c) a plan
projected from the main elevation.

8. Loci
Studio Activity:
• Draw an ellipse with a major axis of 150 mm and a minor axis of 100 mm by
the focal point method.
• Construct a parabola using the locus method, which has its vertex 20 mm
from the directrix.
• The rod AB moves so that A is always on OY and B is always on OX. Plot the
locus of P for the full movement of A from D to C. AB and BC are each 150
cm and AP is 60 cm. (Scale 1 mm to 1 cm.)

Take Home Activity:

• A hyperbola has its vertex 12 mm from the directrix and its focus 20 mm from
the vertex. Draw the curve using the locus method.
• In the given mechanism below, the crank OA revolves anti-clockwise about
O. The end B of the rod AB is constrained to move always along PQ. Plot the
locus of R for one revolution of OA if OA os 30 cm, AB is 105 cm and AR is
70 cm. (Scale 1 mm to 1 cm.)

9. Developments
Studio Activity:
Two views are shown of intersecting pipes whose diameters are unequal. Also
shown are the developments of the vertical and sloping pipes.

10. Freehand Sketching
Studio Activity:
A component made from 10 mm thick plate is rectangular with sides of 35 mm and
65 mm. The corners of the rectangle are removed by 10 mm chamfers at 45°. In the
centre of the plate is a 20 mm diameter hole. Make an orthographic sketch of the
component with dimensions specifying the projection used (i.e., whether First Angle
or Third Angle), and an isometric sketch.

Take Home Activity:

A bar with square cross-section of 40 mm side is 120 mm long. At one end a length
of 50 mm is turned down to 30 mm diameter. 30 mm from the other end, a 20 mm
diameter hole is drilled right through the bar, the hole centre line being
perpendicular to the top face. Make a dimensioned orthographic sketch of the part,
and an isometric sketch.

the following views, showing all hidden detail:
• A front elevation, viewing the part in the direction of the arrow.
• A plan projected from the front elevation.
• An end view positioned on the left of the front elevation.
