Multinational Corporations as Non-State Actors: A Comprehensive
Analysis of the Role of International Businesses in Global Diplomacy
from a Liberal Institutionalist Perspective
Research Question : In what ways do Multinational Corporations (MNCs) participate
in international diplomatic efforts to address transnational challenges, and how does
their involvement impact the effectiveness of global governance initiatives in the
21st century?
Justification
In an era defined by globalization, the role of non-state actors, particularly
multinational corporations (MNCs), has become increasingly significant. This study
conducts a comprehensive examination of the many contributions of MNCs to
diplomatic interactions, employing a Liberal Institutionalist perspective. The research
delves into the dynamics between MNCs, states, and international institutions,
seeking to uncover how economic actors influence and shape diplomatic relations
on the global stage. Through a comprehensive analysis, the research contributes to a
deeper understanding of the role played by MNCs as non-state actors in shaping the
diplomatic landscape within the liberal institutionalist framework.
Objectives
- Identify the methods in which MNCs participate in the formation and
implementation of regulatory frameworks across the globe
- Explore the effects of MNC participation in international security
- Identify the ways in which MNCs help develop peace-building initiatives
- Analyze the relationship between MNC participation in global diplomatic
initiatives and the effectiveness of such initiatives
Methodology
Liberal Institutionalism emphasizes the importance of international institutions,
cooperation, and norms in shaping state behavior. In the context of MNCs, liberal
institutionalism provides a lens through which to analyze how these economic
actors engage with international institutions, adhere to liberal norms, and contribute
to mutual initiatives. This framework sheds light on the interdependence between
states and non-state actors, emphasizing the role of shared values and institutions in
fostering stability and cooperation. As MNCs operate across borders, their
interactions align with the principles of liberal institutionalism
A mixed-methods approach will be employed through the comprehensive review of
various academia-based literature, online international relations journals, reports
from different corporations, and online articles, with which the researcher will
analyze the facts needed to come up with the necessary conclusions.
