Tajuk: Sustainable Mushroom Cultivation (SMC) Programme
Mod Pelaksanaan: Bersemuka
Tarikh Pelaksanaan: 1 Tempat Pelaksanaan: SK Taman Megah
Jun 2024
Latar Belakang / Background:
Food wastes has raised an alarm to the environmental issues and caused many
landfills to have exceeded their carrying capacity and resulted in massive
greenhouse gas emissions. Even though almost 90% of food waste is
biodegradable and can be recycled to generate bio-fertilizer and compost; food
waste is often mixed with other forms of solid waste, making recycling difficult,
and causing land, water, and air pollution. Food waste contains essential
nutrients for the mushroom cultivation; however, a wrong formulation may lead
to a poor growth performance of the mushrooms. Hence, a thorough
investigation is required to evaluate the growth performance of mushrooms
cultivated from food wastes. Besides that, conventional usage of sawdust as
mushroom substrate does not contribute to circular economic benefits.
Collection and enhancement of food wastes in a productive way (mushroom
cultivation) may introduce a new green circular economy especially in the midst
of pandemic to endemic transition by opening up a new business opportunity.
2
Objektif / Objectives:
To formulate food waste such as coco peat, banana skin, chicken eggshell
and used teabags or tea waste as growth substrate for oyster mushroom.
To investigate the growth performance of oyster mushroom
compared with the mushroom that grows through sawdust.

Domain Dan Disiplin This programme is highly related to STEM
Program : (Science, Technology, Engineering, and
[Nyatakan kaitan
Mathematics) fields due to its interdisciplinary
program dengan bidang-
bidang STEM dan nature and the application of various STEM
dasar-dasar negara principles.
yang berkaitan]
1. Science (S): Science plays a crucial role in
understanding the biological processes
involved in mushroom cultivation. This
includes knowledge of fungal biology,
mycology (the study of fungi),
microbiology, and ecology. Science helps in
identifying suitable substrates,
understanding mushroom growth
requirements, and optimizing cultivation
conditions for maximum yield.
2. Technology (T): Technology is utilized in
several aspects of this programme. For
example, the use of modern agricultural
technologies or techniques such as
controlled environment systems.
3. Engineering (E): Engineering principles
come into play in designing and
developing the infrastructure and
equipment necessary for mushroom
cultivation. This includes designing
substrate bags, constructing cultivation
chambers or facilities, optimizing airflow
and humidity levels, and implementing
efficient waste management systems.
4. Mathematics (M): Mathematics is utilized
in various aspects of this programme, such
as calculating substrate ratios, monitoring
growth parameters, analysing data trends,
and optimizing production processes.
Mathematical modelling may also be used
to predict mushroom growth rates,
estimate yields, and optimize resource
utilization for economic viability.

Kumpulan Sasar / Target Group:
Semua murid SK Taman Megah
Tahun1 hingga Tahun 6
Justifikasi Program / Justification:
(Analisis ringkas mengenai trend dan isu berhubung tema program dan mengapa
ianya perlu diberi keutamaan. Nyatakan impak program terhadap kumpulan
sasaran dan kaedah pengukuran impak)
The program has significant impacts on the SK Taman Megah students:
1. Environmental Education:Students learn about the effects of food waste on
the environment and the importance of wise waste management. They realize
that food waste can be a valuable source of organic fertilizer and how proper
recycling can reduce environmental pollution.
2. Entrepreneurial Skills: The program opens opportunities for students to develop
entrepreneurial skills by learning how to manage resources efficiently and run
economically sustainable farming projects. They understand the production
and marketing processes of mushrooms, creating opportunities for innovative
entrepreneurship.
3. Recycling Awareness: By using food waste as mushroom substrate, students
are encouraged to practice recycling in their daily lives. They realize that food
waste can be transformed into valuable products instead of being disposed of in
landfills.
4. Project-Based Learning: The program provides practical experience in
agriculture projects and product development, enhancing communication skills,
teamwork, and problem-solving among students.
5. Science and Technology Knowledge: Students learn about mushroom growth
processes, suitable substrate selection, and growth monitoring techniques,
expanding their knowledge in science and technology related to sustainable
agriculture.
6. Green Economy Awareness: Introducing a green circular economy model,
the program teaches students the importance of sustainable development and
how business practices can align with environmental conservation.
7. Social Awareness Enhancement: Students become aware of the positive social
impact of the project, including contributions to the community, food waste
reduction, and awareness of environmental issues within society. This shapes
social values and responsibility towards sustainable development.

Ringkasan Program / Programme Summary:
(Tidak melebihi 500 patah perkataan)
The programme involves sustainable mushroom cultivation using food
waste as substrate, promoting environmental awareness and
entrepreneurial skills among students. Here's a summary of the technical
aspects and how students carry out the programme:
1. Technical Part:
Utilizing food waste (tea waste, eggshells, banana skin) and
coco peat to create a nutrient-rich substrate for mushroom
cultivation.
Inoculating mushroom grain spawns into substrate bags and
monitoring growth conditions (humidity, temperature,
ventilation).
Evaluating mushroom growth performance based on
biological yield (gram) and economic yield (gram) to
optimize cultivation techniques.
2. Student Involvement:
Students collect and prepare food waste materials, shred
them, and mix with coco peat to create the substrate under
guidance from teachers or experts.
They learn about the science behind mushroom cultivation,
including substrate selection, inoculation techniques, and
growth monitoring.
Students actively participate in monitoring mushroom
growth parameters, recording data, and assessing yield
outcomes.
They engage in entrepreneurial activities by exploring
potential markets for mushrooms and learning about
marketing strategies.
Through hands-on experiences, students develop practical
skills in waste management, agricultural techniques, data
collection, analysis, and problem-solving.
Overall, this long-term programme provides a platform for students to
apply STEM principles in real-world contexts, fostering a deeper
understanding of environmental sustainability, circular economy
concepts, and practical skills relevant to sustainable agriculture and
entrepreneurship.
