CN 422: WAN TECHNOLOGIES

TUTORIAL – 01

(HDLC, PPP, FRAME RELAY, ATM & ISDN)

1. Briefly explain how HDLC protocol satisfies the need of various applications?
2. Briefly explain, why statistical TDM systems typically use synchronous protocols such as HDLC?
3. What is PPP?
4. What are the functions of three main components of point-to-point protocol?
5. What is the physical layer restriction imposed by PPP operating across a DTE-DCE interface?
6. Briefly explain the steps involved in data transfer over Frame Relay connections.
7. Indicating the type, technique, function and key elements, tabulate congestion control techniques
in frame relay
8. Briefly explain how LMI Frame Relay differs from basic Frame Relay
9. How is flow control handled in Frame Relay?
10. A user is connected to a Frame Relay network through a fractional T-1 line. The granted CIR is
1Mbps with a Bc of 5 million bits per 5 seconds and Be of 1million bits per 5 seconds.
(i). Calculate the access rate.

(ii). Can the user send data at 1.6Mbps?

(iii). Can the user send data at 1Mbps all the time?

(iv). Can the user send data at 1.2Mbps all the time? Is it guaranteed that frames are never
discarded in this case?

(v). Can the user send data at a constant rate of 1.4Mbps?

(vi). What is the maximum data rate the user can use all of the time without worrying about the
frames being discarded?

11. Consider a compressed video transmission in an ATM network. Suppose standard ATM cell must be
transmitted through 5 Switches. The data rate is 43 Mbps.

(i) What is the transmission time for one cell through one switch?

(ii) Now suppose that each switch is utilized 60% of the time with the low priority traffic, and if there is
a cell being transmitted by a switch, the average delay spent waiting for a cell to finish transmission
is one-half a cell transmission time. What is the average time from the input of the first switch to
clearing the fifth?

12. Briefly explain at least four (4) advantages of using virtual paths in ATM connections.
13. List four types of services provided by ISDN for end-to-end communication.
14. Explain why ISDN architecture on subscriber’s premises is broken up using functional groupings
and reference points?
15. ISDN PRI has no single value for data rate. Explain why.
16. What is the difference between functional groupings and reference points in ISDN?

17. The protocol for user access to ISDN exhibits a layered architecture and can be mapped into the
OSI model. What are the advantages of this?
18. Briefly explain the six principles of ISDN.
19. Mention and briefly explain the functions of three (3) types of reference points in ISDN.
20. A basic access ISDN subscriber has the following equipment: 3 ISDN telephone sets, 1 ISDN fax
machine, 1 PC (Personal Computer) with ISDN card installed, 3 non-ISDN Terminal Equipment
(non-ISDN or non-ISDN data terminal), 3 ISDN Terminal Adapter (TA), and 1 Network
Termination Unit of type 1 (NT1). Draw a block diagram showing the connection of this equipment
to an ISDN exchange and show the reference points on the block diagram.
