COURSE OUTCOMES
At the end of the course students are able to
1. Differentiate network reference models such as OSI, TCP/IP
2. Classify various Data Link Layer protocols such as sliding window.
3. Distinguish various MAC sub Layer Protocols, such as ALOHA, CSMA, CSMA/CD
4. Differentiate various Network layer protocols and Its Applications
5. Distinguish various Transport layer protocols and its applications
6. Illustrate various application layer protocols such as www And HTTP etc.
UNIT 1:
Data communication Components: Representation of data and its flow Networks, categories
of Networks, Various Connection Topology, Protocols and Standards, OSI model, TCP/IP
Protocol suit, Transmission Media.
UNIT 2:
Data Link Layer: Error Detection and Error Correction -Fundamentals, Block coding,
Hamming Distance, CRC; Flow Control and Error control protocols - Stop and Wait, Go back –
N ARQ, Selective Repeat ARQ, Sliding Window, Piggybacking,
UNIT3:
Medium Access Sub Layer: Random Access, Multiple access protocols -Pure ALOHA, Slotted
ALOHA, CSMA/CD, CDMA/CA.
UNIT 4:
Network Layer: Switching, Logical addressing – IPV4, IPV6; Address mapping – ARP, RARP,
BOOTP and DHCP–Delivery, Forwarding and Unicast Routing protocols.
UNIT 5:
Transport Layer: Process to Process Communication, User Datagram Protocol (UDP),
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), Control; Quality of Service, QoS improving techniques:
Leaky Bucket and Token Bucket algorithm.
UNIT 6:
Application Layer: Domain Name Space (DNS), DDNS, TELNET, EMAIL, File Transfer
Protocol (FTP), WWW, HTTP,
