Motion
RIGID BODY
• In pure translational motion at any instant of time every particle of the body
has the same velocity.
● The axis of a spinning top moves around the vertical through its point
of contact with the ground, sweeping out a cone.
● The movement of the axis of rotation is termed precession.
• The motion of a rigid body which is not pivoted or fixed in some way is
either a pure translation or a combination of translation and rotation.
• The motion of a rigid body which is pivoted or fixed in some way is
rotation.
CENTRE OF MASS
● Centre of mass is the point at which the entire mass of the body
can be assumed to be concentrated.
● For the particles of equal mass m
● Thus, for three particles of equal mass, the centre of mass coincides
with the centroid of the triangle formed by the particles.
● In terms of position vectors, the centre of mass is given by
PROBLEM
Solution
• We have
• When the total external force on the system is zero the velocity of the
centre of mass remains constant.
● If the fingers of the right hand are curled in such a way that they point
along the direction of rotation from vector A to vector B through a
small angle, then the thumb points in the direction of the cross
product of vector A and B.
ANGULAR VELOCITY AND ITS RELATION WITH LINEAR VELOCITY
● Thus
Translational equilibrium
● The vector sum of the forces, on the rigid body is zero – linear
momentum is conserved.
Rotational equilibrium
Partial equilibrium
Couple
Advantage (M.A.)
● If the effort arm d2 is larger than the load arm, the mechanical
advantage is greater than one.
● Mechanical advantage greater than one means that a small effort
can be used to lift a large load.
Centre of gravity
● Consider a thin ring of radius R and mass M, rotating in its own plane
around its centre with angular velocity ω.
● Each mass element of the ring is at a distance R from the axis, and
moves with a speed Rω.
● The kinetic energy is therefore,
• We get I = MR2
● Thus
Radius of Gyration
I =Mk2
k =√I/M
No Body Axis I
PROBLEM
Iz‘ = Iz + Ma2
PROBLEM – 1
• What is the moment of inertia of a rod of mass M, length l about an axis
perpendicular to it through one end?
Solution
POBLEM – 2
• What is the moment of inertia of a ring about a tangent to the circle of the ring?
Solution
KINEMATICS OF ROTATIONAL MOTION ABOUT A FIXED AXIS
• The angular speed of a motor wheel is increased from 1200 rpm to 3120 rpm in
16 seconds.
Solution
i)
● Thus
• The work done by the total (external) torque τ which acts on the body rotating
about a fixed
axis is given by
PROBLEM
Solution
● Therefore
1. Work done by the pull unwinding 2m of the cord is
L=Iω
● Also, skaters and classical, Indian or western, dancers etc , use this
principle.
ROLLING MOTION
● Thus, for the disc , the condition for rolling without slipping is
● Where vcm – velocity of centre of mass
● Thus, the velocity of point P1 at the top of the disc (v1) has a
magnitude
●
● Substituting I = m k2 and vcm =Rω
• Thus
PROBLEM
Three bodies, a ring, a solid cylinder and a solid sphere roll down the same
inclined plane without slipping. They start from rest. The radii of the bodies are
identical. Which of the bodies reaches the ground with maximum velocity?
Solution
● We have
●
● v – velocity of centre of mass
● Potential energy = mgh
● Therefore
• Thus
Velocity of ring
• For a ring k2 = R2
• Therefore
