ASSIGNMENT FOR CHM420

CHAPTER 5: CHEMICAL BONDING

INSTRUCTIONS
This assignment consists of three (3) questions (30 marks = 10%). Answer all the
questions.
Answer:
Question 1
i. ii.

2 marks

iii.

2 marks
b)

1. Count all valence electrons (all atom) 2. Place two electrons between each pair of
atom and draw in single bond
1O = 1 x 6e- = 6e- (1 mark)
1H = 1 x 1e- = 1e-
1Br = 1 x 7e- = 7e-
TOTAL = 14e-
Single bonds = - 4e-
= 10e-
Br lone pairs = -6e-
O lone pair = -4e-
= 0 e- (2 marks) 3. Complete octet of terminal atoms
(1 mark)

Question 2
a) For OF2, O has the lowest EN and will be the center atom.
Count all valence electrons (all atom)

1O = 1 x 6e- = 6e-
2F = 2 x 7e- = 16e-
TOTAL = 20e- (0.5 mark)
Draw the Lewis Structure.
Place two electrons between each pair of atoms and draw in single bond. (0.5
mark)
Complete octet of terminal atoms. Place remaining electrons on central atom.
(0.5 mark)
(0.5 mark)
There are 2 atoms and 2 nonbonding pairs attached to the center atom. Draw the
molecular shape and determine the molecular geometry of the molecule.

(1 mark)
Answer:
Electronic geometry: Trigonal bipyramidal
AX2E3, linear (1 mark).
The F—Xe—F bond angles should be <90o due to the repulsion of the
nonbonding electron pairs (1 mark).

b) For ClO2- , count all valence electrons (all atom)

1Cl = 1 x 7e- = 7-
2O = 2 x 6e- = 12e-
Extra e- = 1e-
TOTAL = 20e- (0.5 mark)
Draw the Lewis Structure.
Place two electrons between each pair of atoms and draw in single bond. (0.5 mark)
Complete octet of terminal atoms. Place remaining electrons on central atom. (0.5
mark)

(0.5 mark)
There are 2 bonding and 2 nonbonding pair attached to the center atom.
Draw the molecular shape and determine the molecular geometry of the molecule.
(1 mark)
Answer:
Electronic geometry: Tetrahedral
AX2E2, Bent (1 mark). The O—Cl—O bond angles should be <109.5o due to the
repulsion of the nonbonding electron pair (1 mark).

Question 3

i. Explain why ethanol, CH3CH2OH is more soluble in water compared to chloroethane, CH3CH2Cl.
Both molecules are polar (1 mark). However, the type of molecular interaction between the two
molecules with water is differ. Ethanol can form hydrogen bonds (1 mark) with water while
chloroethane only interact with water through dipole-dipole forces (1 mark). Hydrogen bond is
stronger than dipole-dipole forces (2 marks), thus ethanol is more soluble in water.

ii. Although having similar molecular structure, trichlorofluoromethane, CFCl3 boils at the
temperature of 23.7 ˚C, while dichlorofluoromethane, CF2Cl2 boils at -29.8 ˚C. Explain why the
boiling point of CFCl3 is higher than CF2Cl2.
Observing through the molecular structure CFCl3 and CF2Cl2 are both polar molecules (1 mark).
They both mainly interact through dipole-dipole forces (1 mark). However, CFCl3 has higher
molecular mass compared to CF2Cl2 (2 marks) resulting in stronger London dispersion/Van der
Waals forces (1 marks). This cause the boiling point of CFCl3 is higher than CF2Cl2.
