1.0 INTRODUCTION

SIWES internship being registered for all four (4) hundred level students in

the Faculty of Engineering.

SIWES is strategized for skill acquisition. It is in fact designed to prepare

and expose students of universities, polytechnics and colleges of education

to the real-life work situation they would be engaged in after graduation.

Therefore, SIWES is a key factor required to inject and help keep alive

industrialization and economic development in the nation through the

introduction and practical teaching of scientific and technological skills to

students.

The Scheme exposes students to industry-based skills necessary for a

smooth transition from the classroom to the world of work. It affords

students of tertiary institutions the opportunity of being familiarized and

exposed to the needed experience in/outdoor.

I applied and was accepted as a trainee in the Mechanical Engineering

department at Jogisco Nigeria Limite as my primary place of attachment.

1.1 ESTABLISHMENT PROFILE

CHAPTER TWO

3.1 TASK 2: WATCH KEEPIN OF AN ENGINE

Watch keeping of an engine is a term that refers to the monitoring and

maintenance of an engine to ensure that it operates safely and efficiently. It

typically involves regular checks and inspections to ensure that the engine is

in good condition, as well as taking steps to prevent any potential problems

from occurring. Watch keeping may involve tasks such as checking oil

levels, monitoring engine temperature, and making sure that all components

are functioning correctly. This is important for the safe and reliable

operation of the engine, as well as for prolonging its lifespan.

3.3 METHOD

We used the schematic meantaince log book given by our instructor as a

guide in building the circuit using the components mentioned above.

3.4 NUMBER OF PERSONS IN THE TEAM

• We were two in number that carried out this task including our instructor

(that’s to say, One IT students, one trainee and the instructor).

3.5 DUTY IN THE TEAM

• As a group work, I was tasked with the checking of Engine (generator)

oil level and fuel level and also tasked to start the Engine ( Generator).

3.6 CHALLENGES

• low battrey to start engine.

3.7 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

• coverall

• safety shoes

• Safety glass

• gloves

• earmuffs
CHAPTER THREE

• 4.1 INSTALLATION OF A TURBOCHARGER

• A turbocharger is a device that increases the power output of an engine

by forcing more air into the combustion chamber. It consists of two

main parts: a turbine and a compressor.

• The turbine is driven by the exhaust gases from the engine, which spins

the compressor. The compressor increases the pressure of the air

entering the engine, which allows more fuel to be burned and generates

more power.

• Turbochargers are commonly used in diesel engines and gasoline

engines to increase their power and efficiency. They can also be used to

improve fuel economy by allowing the engine to run at a lower RPM,

which reduces fuel consumption.

4.2 MATERIALS USED

• Screwdrivers
• pliers

• Torque wrenches

4.3 METHOD

• Preparation: Make sure the engine is clean and free of debris. If the

turbocharger is being installed on a new engine, make sure it is properly

lubricated.

• Mounting: Secure the turbocharger to the engine using the appropriate

hardware. This may involve attaching it to the exhaust manifold or using

mounting brackets.

• Connections: Connect the turbocharger to the engine's oil and coolant

lines, as well as the air intake and exhaust systems.

4.4 NUMBER OF PERSONS IN THE TEAM

• We were fourteen in number that carried out this task including our

instructor (that’s to say, four IT students and ten trainee and the

instructor).

4.5 DUTY IN THE TEAM

• help with the mouning of the turborcharger by holding components in the

place or passing tools to the mechanic.

4.8 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

• Coverall

• Helmet or Hard hat

• Hand gloves

• Goggle

• Safety Boot

CHAPTER FOUR

2.1 TASK 1: .TROUBLESHOOTING SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS WITH

A ELECTRONIC TECHNICIAN (ET) SOFTWARE IN A CAT 3406

Troubleshooting Caterpillar systems with Electronic Technician (ET)

software involves a methodical process. Key steps include connecting

the software to the equipment's Electronic Control Module, retrieving

and analyzing fault codes, consulting service information, performing

repairs or adjustments, clearing fault codes, and conducting a final test

to confirm resolution. This systematic approach ensures optimal

performance and minimizes downtime for equipment maintenance and

repairs.

2.2 MATERERIALS USED

Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) software

Diagnostic cable (appropriate for your specific Cat 3406 engine)

Service manuals and guides (specific to the Cat 3406 engine)

Wiring diagrams (for the Cat 3406 engine)

Laptop or computer with the necessary system requirements to run ET

software

Cat 3406 engine's Electronic Control Module (ECM)

Ensure that all materials are compatible with your specific Cat 3406 engine

and ET software version before beginning the troubleshooting process.

Having these materials on hand will help you efficiently diagnose and

resolve issues with your Cat 3406 engine.

2.3 METHODS
Troubleshooting a Caterpillar 3406 engine using Electronic Technician

(ET) software involves a systematic approach. Follow these steps for

efficient diagnosis:

Connect the ET software: Use the appropriate diagnostic cable to

establish a connection between the software and the 3406 engine's

Electronic Control Module (ECM).

Retrieve fault codes: Perform a diagnostic test with the ET software to

obtain active or stored fault codes from the 3406 engine's ECM.

Analyze fault codes: Review the fault codes and related information to

identify the source of the problem or symptoms specific to the 3406

engine.

Consult service information: Access relevant service manuals, guides,

and wiring diagrams for the 3406 engine using the ET software to gain a

better understanding of the issue and identify potential solutions.

Perform repairs or adjustments: Follow recommended procedures to

address the identified issue, which may include repairing or replacing

components, adjusting settings, or updating software.

Clear fault codes: After completing repairs or adjustments, use the ET

software to clear any remaining fault codes from the 3406 engine's

ECM.

Conduct a final test: Perform another diagnostic test with the ET

software to confirm that the problem has been resolved and no new

issues have emerged in the 3406 engine.

5.1 CONCLUSION

My four (6) months of industrial attachment as a mechanical engineer at

Jogico Nigeria Limited was a huge success and a great time of acquisition of

knowledge and skills. Through my training, I was able to appreciate my

chosen course of study even more because I had the opportunity to blend the

theoretical knowledge acquired from school with the practical hands-on

application of knowledge gained here to perform very important tasks in

society.

My training here has given me a broader view of the importance and

relevance of mechanical engineers in the immediate society and the world as

a whole, as I now look forward to impacting it positively after graduation.

5.2 RECOMMENDATION:

Although SIWES underwent did achieve quite a lot of its objectives.

Nevertheless, I use this means to make the following recommendations

concerning the training of students in Industrial Attachments:

• I would like to recommend that the Engineering curriculum in the Niger

Delta University be adjusted such as would provide going on industrial

attachments for a longer period as opposed to 4 months or making the

program occur twice throughout an engineering degree program.
