Sketching curves

0580 IGCSE Mathematics 2025-2027 E2.11

Recognising and sketching functions
We will learn to sketch graphs of the following functions:
● linear

● quadratic

● cubic

● reciprocal

● exponential
Come up with two examples of each.
Sketching linear functions
Consider the equation:

Which features of the graph could be determined to draw it

accurately?
Sketching quadratic functions
Consider the equation:

What is the shape of its graph?

Which features of the graph could be determined to draw it

accurately?
Sketching cubic functions (1)
Consider the general equation:

What is the shape of its graph?

Which features of the graph could be determined to draw it

accurately?
Sketching cubic functions (2)
The graph of a cubic function may have one of the following
shapes:

a > 0 a < 0
Sketching cubic functions (3)
The graph of a cubic function intersects the x-axis at one,
two, or three points:
Sketching reciprocal functions (1)
Consider the equation:
Sketching reciprocal functions (2)
Consider the equation:
Asymptote
An asymptote of a curve is a line that
the curve approaches (gets closer to) as
either the x- or the y-coordinate
approaches infinity.

Can you identify all the asymptotes of the curve shown here?
Asymptotes of reciprocal functions
Consider the general equation:

Both the x-axis (y = 0) and y-axis (x = 0) are asymptotes of

the graph of the equation.
Sketching exponential functions
Consider the general equations:
Asymptote of exponential functions
Consider the general equations:

The x-axis (y = 0) is the asymptote of the graph of the

equations.

As x approaches negative infinity, y approaches zero.
