Question tags – form and meaning

1. Concept

Tag question são frases curtas adicionadas ao final de frases para transforma-las em perguntas, com o objetivo de
concordar com a sentença. Veja o exemplo:

ͫ you like mushrooms, don’t you?” – você gosta de cogumelos, não gosta?

2. Form

Question tags são formadas por um auxiliar + pronome. Veja os seguintes pontos.

• Se o pronome é usado como sujeito, use o mesmo pronome na question tag.

• Se a frase for afirmativa, use a question tag no negativo. Se a frase for negativa, use a quention tag no afirmativo.

ͫ You are happy, aren’t you? – você está Feliz, não está?

ͫ You aren’t happy, are you? – você não está Feliz, está?

• Se o pronome da frase for ‘nothing, nobody’ considere como uma frase negativa, portanto a tag question é afirmativa

ͫ Nothing is working, Is it? (nada está funcionando, está?

• Se ter um substantivo como sujeito (nome de pessoa, lugar, animal, coisa, ideia) uso o pronome de acordo com
esse sujeito.

ͫ Canada is a great country, isn’t it? – Canadá é um país incrível, não é?

• Quando á dois verbos (um principal e um auxiliar) a teg question é formada com o verbo auxiliar.

ͫ They were waiting for her, weren’t they? – Eles estavam esperando pore la, não estavam?

3. Exemplos

Shahina is the new lead, isn’t she?

They have confirmed, haven’t they?

She would not have done that, would she?

They have not arrived yet, have they?

Bring me some tissue papers, will you?

They bought a new LED television, didn’t they?

Arranging transport and accommodation for the guests had been their first priority, hadn’t it?

Sheena will not be attending the ceremony, will she?

All students have not submitted their assignments yet, have they?

Tina had not informed the others about the change of venue, had she?

The baby elephant that fell into the well was rescued by the locals, wasn’t it?

You like cookies, don’t you?

You cannot survive without your phone, can you?

Tharun and Varun are on their way to the airport, aren’t they?

Her father is a doctor, isn’t he?

You have been looking for an apartment, haven’t you?

Ritu and Brinha were not the best of friends from the start, were they?

Buying a new car when you already had a loan wasn’t a good idea, was it?

Making small talk isn’t your forte, is it?

Balu, the bear isn’t the one that saves Mowgli from the monkeys, is it?
