FORMULAS FOR PUMP CALCULATION;

1. A gallon of water weighs 8-1/3 lbs and contains 231 cu.in.

2.A cu.ft water weighs 62-1/2 lbs and contains 1,728 cu.in or 7-1/2 gallons
3.A cu.ft per sec equals 450 gallons per min
4. An acre-ft is 325,829 gallons
5. The term "miner's inch" of water is approx. equal to a flow of 11-1/4 gal per min.
6.To find diameter of pump cylinder required to move a given quantity of water per minute, the piston travel being 100ft per min, divide the
number of gallons by four. Then extract the square root and the result will be diameter in inches.
7. To find the area of a required pipe, the volume of water being known, multiply the number of cu.ft of water by 144 and divide the product by the
velocity in ft.per min. This gives the area of the pipe, from which is easy to determine the diameter.
8. To find velocity of ft per min necessary to discharge a give volume of water in agiven time, multiply the number of cu.ft of water by 144 and
divide the product by the area of pipe in inches.
9. With steam pumps the area of the steam piston multiplied by the steam pressure gives the total amount of steam pressure exerted. The area
of the water piston multiplied by the pressure of the water per sq.in gives the resistance. A margin must be made between the power and
resistance to move the pistons at required speed, usually reckoned at from 25 to 40%
10. To find the capacity of pump;
Capacity of pump per stroke in
Cu.in = S x A
Gal = S x A / 231

Capacity of pump per stroke in

Cu.ft = S x A / 1728

Capacity of pump per stroke in

Lb = 8 x A x 8-1/3 / 231

Capacity of pump per min in

cu.in = S x N x A

Capacity of pump per min in

Gal (G) = S x N x A / 231

Capacity of pump per min in

Cu.ft = S x N x A / 1728
11. HP required to elevate a given quantity of water per min to a given height, not allowing for friction;
.. = G x H x 8-1/3 / 33,000

Note; In In figuring the actual HP required to operate a pump the "friction head" should be added to the "actual head" or elevation
Approx.friction = L(ft) x V 9ft/sec) 2 x 0.02
head (ft) 5.367 x d (in)

where L = is the length; V is the velocity of flow and d is the diameter of the pipe

Area of Cylinder is
sq.inches = D2 x 0.7854

Pressure per sq.in in pounds of a column of water = H x 0.434

D is the diameter of the cylinde in inches.

S is the length of the stroke in inches.
N is the total number of strokes per minute.
G is the quantity of gallons per minute
H is the height of water is elevated in feet
A is the area of the cylinder in square inches.
