INTRODUCTION
This report for the demolition and deconstruction of Cambridge College (The Building),
formerly located at 64 Adekunle Fajuyi Street GRA, Ikeja, Lagos (The Site), was prepared by
Oguntuyi Oluwatoyosi.
The purpose of this report is to summarize the deconstruction and demolition of the building at
the Site. This report contains responses from the organization conducting the demolition about
the actions undertaken at the Site, including the preparation, deconstruction and demolition of

other materials disposed as part of the work. The deconstruction and demolition were performed
to prepare the site for another building to be erected.

DEMOLITION OF CAMBRIDGE COLLEGE

Site Investigation
Reconnaissance was done, checking the environmental impact. Would it affect adjacent
buildings and passersby’s, existing structural analysis was checked to confirm the strength of the
structural members. A hazardous material survey was done to find hazardous material on site and
a check for the process of deconstruction to be used. An assessment of the service path was also
done (mostly underground)
Site Preparation
Deconstruction Method Used: Non Structural Deconstruction (Soft Stripping)
Site preparation generally consisted of removal of furniture (chairs, bedframes, shelves etc.)
from the building and construction of props and braces to ensure the safety stability of the
surrounding structure. Equipment was mobilized to the site for deconstruction and demolition.
Power was disconnected and generator cables and electrical wires were disconnected and
removed from junction boxes, the pool drained and materials/items from the interior of the
building were removed and placed outside for storage such as the removal of glass panes from
the windows, the door and window frames removed as well with the use of Hand tools (Chisels
and Hammers) to break the perimeter of the frames and wrapped with cling wraps and placed in
storage, the suspended ceilings were also removed, utilities (WC, Water cistern storage, Wash
Hand Basins, Taps etc.) in the buildings were also removed.
Demolition
LABSCA demolition permit was given. The deconstruction of the building was conducted
concurrent with the Site preparation process. After deconstruction of the interior, the contractor
began preparing for the demolition.
Tools used for Deconstruction and Demolition
Hand tools: Sledge Hammer, Chisels, Crowbar, Screw drivers, Hand Saw, Pliers
Mechanical Tools: Jack Hammer

Materials Salvaged, Disposed and Recycled

Copper, Stainless Steel, Copper wire, Wood, Aluminium Works, Roofing Sheets, Doors,
Composite panels etc.

Concrete from the interior walls are hauled to a location on site to be used for fill material.
Metals were sorted during the deconstruction process and removed from the site and hauled to a
recycling facility.
Water that had accumulated in the pool during deconstruction activities was properly drained off
and the pool elements like the railings, tiles were removed, cleaned and packed away.
Fluorescent Light bulbs were removed from the site by the contractor

SITE GRADING
The rubble hauled away for fill would be brought to the root of the old foundation and the
contractor would level the site following the specifications included in the demolition plan for
the new construction to take place

INSPECTIONS
Pre-Final Inspection
In preparation for a site walk after demolition a punch list would be developed to catalogue
outstanding work items for the contractor to address prior to final closure of the project.
Final Inspection
A final inspection of the work would be done after the contractor has addressed the punch list
items from the pre-final inspection. No other unresolved issues or work items would remain at
the time of the final inspection.
