1. Introduction
1.1 Research title
The Effect of Psychological Well-being on Maintaining the Work-life Balance among Married,
Working, Postgraduate Female Students UH KDU
1.2 Background
In this study the effect of having a balanced mental health (psychological well-being/PWB) on
maintaining the work-life balance (WLB) is planned to examine among married, working and
studying women.
Traditionally, women have been treated as nurturers and care givers of a society. They’ve been
assigned all roles in maintaining and managing a family. Men perceive themselves as
breadwinners and society also expects them to perform work roles to earn and support the
family. However, this situation have been changing during past few decades as the financial
status of families have become more crucial.
The economic need is considered to be the first criteria for married women to go to work .
Therefore, over the decades the participation of women in jobs and their need to improve their
educational qualification is remarkably increased .
On the other hand, in twenty first century organizations are characterized by persistent
changes, uncertainties and excessive pressure to increase productivity and their outcome.
These changes could disturb the balance in the lives of employees causing confusion and stress.
This situation has caused a greater impact on female employees as they have to maintain both
family and work. Therefore, the concept work-life balance has increased a considerable concern
and attention among organizations, trade unions, employers and scholars.
The concept work-life balance is considered to be one of the major issues that play a vital role
in organizational success. Therefore, if an organization wants to attain highly proficient female
employees, then there is an urgent need for an industry to develop a confirming work situation
and to provide effective measures for female workers to sustain a healthy work-life balance.
Work-life balance is a term used to describe the balance between an individual’s professional
and personal life.
Evident show that while a balanced work-life combination creates harmony in both professional
and personal life, imbalance between work and life can create negative impact on an
employee’s personal life which leads to job dissatisfaction that damages organization’s
productivity and reputation. Therefore, a better WLB will lead to reduce levels of work life
conflict and this improves recruitment and reduces work life conflict which enhance the
organizational effectiveness. And also, studies have shown that the imbalance in person’s life is
related to higher turnover, less productivity, and lower work effectiveness. At the
organizational level, balanced nature of work increases productivity and efficiency of employees
and thereby they become more creative and derive more satisfaction from work.
There are several reported studies that have been conducted to study the factors affecting
worklife balance. Among them, feelings and thoughts that the workers experience or possess
over time has a significant impact on their autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth,
positive relations, purpose in life and self-acceptance which lead to build the psychological
wellbeing of the employees in the workplace. Psychological well-being is a positive attribute of
mental health. Psychological well-being is the quality of life of a person. Therefore, through this
study how psychological well-being of employees affect on their work-life balance will be
assessed.
1.3 Justification
1.3.1 Statement of the Research Problem
The Effect of Psychological Well-being on Maintaining the Work-life Balance among Married,
Working, Postgraduate Female Students.
1.3.2 Significance of the Research Problem
In recent decades, achieving a better work-life balance while being a married, postgraduate
woman is one of the major issues that play a vital role in organizational success.
Therefore, I have identified the gap/need of understanding, how the psychological well-being of
married, working, postgraduate students is effecting on their work-life balance while managing
all three aspects (marriage, work and studies). Because at present the organizations are more
concentrated on achieving their organizational goals and profits. Therefore, if an organization
requires highly proficient female employees who are willing to pursue their job while engaging
in higher studies, then the organization have to provide effective measures/working
environment at the workplace for female workers to sustain a healthy work-life balance. In
order to provide those measures, the company management should be aware of the effect of
psychological wellbeing on maintaining the work-life balance and how these women control
their mental health towards achieving their work-life balance and that will be studied through
this research.
