CLIMATE CHANGE

LEADING TO
SUSTAINABLE
ARCHITECTURE
BY: ARCH. RAYMOND A. MATIC, UAP
Overview: Climate Change
refers to significant changes in global temperature, precipitation, average weather patterns,
wind patterns, and other measures of climate that occur over several decades or longer.
climate change is responsible for the change in the normal climatic conditions.

Needless to say, our earth is experiencing rising global temperatures. Do you think it is a
matter of concern? Well yes, there has been a drastic change in the climate due to
hazardous factors such as pollution, burning coal, industrial waste disposal in the air,
etc. All this will result in affecting the environment and its resources.
Therefore, as future Architects you need to think, create, and design a
Climate-resilient Building using Sustainable/ Architecture and Energy-
Efficient Systems that can be of help in addressing the issues of climate
change. So, what is your idea of Sustainable Architecture then?
SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE
Sustainable architecture, also known as green architecture, is a design
philosophy that aims to minimize the negative impact of buildings on
the environment and promote sustainability. This involves using
environmentally friendly materials, energy-efficient technologies, and a
focus on reducing waste and pollution. Sustainable architecture seeks
to create buildings that are not only aesthetically pleasing and
functional but also socially responsible and environmentally
sustainable.
In essence, sustainable architecture seeks to strike a
balance between human needs and environmental
concerns. It emphasizes using renewable resources,
smaller carbon footprints, and a more efficient use of
energy. Sustainable building practices contribute to a
healthier and more resilient environment, while also
promoting human health and wellbeing.
OBJECTIVES AND IMPORTANCE OF
SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE
REDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Sustainable architecture focuses on reducing the
environmental impact of buildings by using energy-efficient
designs, renewable energy sources, and sustainable
materials. This can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions
and conserve natural resources. Sustainable architecture
can also help reduce this impact by minimizing energy and
water consumption, reducing waste, and using eco-friendly
materials.

HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

Sustainable architecture can contribute to the health and
well-being of occupants by providing better indoor air
quality, natural lighting, and comfortable living spaces.
COST SAVINGS
Sustainable buildings can be more cost-effective in the long
run due to reduced energy consumption and lower
maintenance costs.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Sustainable architecture promotes social responsibility by
encouraging architects and builders to consider the impact
of their designs on the community and the environment.
ECONOMIC BENEFITS
Sustainable buildings can save money over time by reducing
energy and water bills, and potentially increasing property
value.

FUTURE-PROOFING
Sustainable architecture can help future-proof buildings
against the effects of climate change, such as extreme
weather events, rising sea levels, and water scarcity.
ENCOURAGING INNOVATION
Sustainable architecture encourages the use of innovative
technologies and materials to create buildings that are more
sustainable.

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE
Many governments and organizations have implemented
regulations and standards for sustainable building design
and construction, making it essential for architects and
builders to adhere to these requirements.
SIX SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE STRATEGIES
THAT REDUCE THE NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL
IMPACT FROM A BUILT ENVIRONMENT
1. PASSIVE SUSTAINABLE
DESIGN
Passive Sustainable Design refers to using
building strategies that rely on natural
resources to reduce the amount of energy
needed to run a building. Instead of relying
on artificial means to regulate temperature
and lighting, designers and builders carefully
consider the orientation of the building, the
climate it will be in, and the placement of
windows to maximize the use of natural light and ventilation. By utilizing natural light and ventilation, buildings can reduce the
amount of energy needed for lighting, cooling, or heating. The strategic placement of windows can also help to regulate
temperature and create a comfortable indoor environment. In certain climates, thermal mass techniques can be used to further
reduce the building's energy requirements. This involves using materials with high thermal mass, such as thick walls or concrete
floors, to absorb and store heat from the sun during the day. This stored heat is then slowly released into the building at night,
reducing the need for artificial heating. Overall, Passive Sustainable Design is an effective way to reduce energy consumption
and minimize a building's carbon footprint. By designing buildings that rely on natural resources rather than artificial means,
designers and builders can create more sustainable and environmentally friendly structures.
PASSIVE
1. Orienting a building to maximize solar gain
in the winter and minimize it in the

SUSTAINABLE summer.
2. Using natural ventilation and shading to

systems.

EXAMPLE: 3. Designing buildings with high-performance

insulation, windows, and air sealing to
minimize heat loss and gain.
4. Designing buildings with a thermal mass,
such as concrete or stone, to absorb and
store heat energy for later use.
5. Incorporating natural daylighting
strategies, such as clerestory windows and
skylights, to reduce the need for electric
lighting during the day.
2. ACTIVE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN.
Active sustainable design is a type of building design that focuses on using high-efficiency
mechanical and electrical systems to minimize the itects who specialize in Active

mechanical and electrical engineers to implement systems that consume
minimal energy and water while still meeting the needs of the building's
occupants.
These systems can include high-efficiency electrical systems that use

energy-efficient lighting and appliances, as well as plumbing systems that

reduce water consumption through the use of low-flow fixtures and water
recycling technologies. HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning)
systems are also carefully designed to reduce energy consumption and
ensure that the building's indoor environment is comfortable and healthy.

highly efficient and environmentally responsible. By using the latest
technologies and design strategies, architects and engineers can create
buildings that minimize their impact on the environment while providing
comfortable and healthy indoor spaces for their occupants.

2. Using high-efficiency HVAC systems and optimizing them

energy usage.
4. Using high-efficiency water fixtures and appliances, such as low-

5. Implementing a demand-response system to adjust building
energy

grid.

RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS
Renewable energy comes from unlimited, naturally replenished
resources, such as the sun, tides, and wind. Renewable energy
can be used for electricity generation, space and water heating
and cooling, and transportation. Non-renewable energy, in
contrast, comes from finite sources, such as coal, natural gas,
and oil.

Solar and wind energy systems are prevalent for buildings, as

they can be easily installed and provide a reliable source of
clean energy. These systems can be used in conjunction with
passive design strategies to maximize energy efficiency and
minimize the environmental impact of a building.
In passive solar design, for example, the building is oriented
and designed
in such a way as to maximize solar exposure and natural lighting. This can be
complemented with solar panels, which can generate electricity from the sun's energy.
Similarly, wind turbines can be used in conjunction with natural ventilation to create a
sustainable and energy-efficient building.
Renewable energy systems are a key component of sustainable building design and can
significantly reduce a building's carbon footprint. By harnessing the power of
renewable resources, buildings can become self-sufficient and contribute to a more
sustainable future.
The beautiful Frontier Project is a top example of how architects use sustainable
architecture strategies.
