Tutorial 1: Introduction to Electric Machines Drives

4 Examples

Marc Anthony Mannah

Example 1
The speed of a separately excited DC motor is controlled by a SP full wave converter. The field circuit is also
controlled by a similar circuit and is set to maximum value. The AC supply voltage to the armature and field
circuits is one phase, 440 V, 60 Hz. The armature resistance is Ra= 0.25Ω, the field circuit resistance is Rf= 175Ω
and the motor voltage constant is Kv= 1.4 V/A rad/s. The armature current corresponding to the load is Ia= 45A.
The viscous friction and the no load losses are negligible. The inductances of the armature and the field circuits
are sufficient high to make the currents continuous and ripple free. The delay angle of the armature circuit is αa=
60°.

a) Find the developped torque by the motor Td.

b) Find the speed ω.
c) Find the input PF of the drive.
d) Suppose the polarity of the motor back emf is reversed by reversing the polarity of the field current. Find the
delay angle of the armature αa to maintain the armature current constant at the same value.
e) Find the power fed back to the supply due to regenerative braking of the motor.
Example 2
The speed of a 20 hp, 300 V, 900 rpm separately excited DC motor is controlled by a 3P full wave converter. The field
circuit is also controlled by a similar circuit. The AC supply voltage to the armature and field circuits is a three phase,
Y connected 208 V, 60 Hz. The armature resistance is Ra= 0.25Ω, the field circuit resistance is Rf= 145Ω and the motor
voltage constant is Kv= 1.2 V/A rad/s. The viscous friction and the no load losses are negligible. The inductances of
the armature and the field circuits are sufficient high to make the currents continuous and ripple free.

a) If the field converter is operated at maximum field current and the developed torque is Td= 116 N.m at 900 rpm,
determine the delay angle of the armature αa.
b) If the field converter is operated at maximum field current, the developed torque is Td= 116 N.m and the delay
angle of the armature αa = 0, determine the speed of the motor.
c) For the same load demand in b), determine the delay angle of the field converter if the speed has to be
increased to 1800 rpm.
Example 3

A DC-DC converter is used in regenerative braking of a DC series motor. The DC supply voltage is 600V. The
armature resistance Ra= 0.02Ω and the field resistance is Rf= 0.03Ω. The back emf is Kv=15.27 mV/A rad/s. The
average armature current is maintained constant at Ia= 250A. The armature current is continuous and has
negligible ripple. The duty cycle of the DC-DC converter is 60%.

Example 4

A three phase, 460 V, 60 Hz, four pole, Y connected induction motor has the following equivalent circuit
parameters: Rs= 0.42Ω, R’r= 0.23Ω, Xs= X’r= 0.82Ω and Xm= 22Ω. The no-load losses Pno Load = 60W are assumed
constant. The rotor speed is 1750 rpm.

h) Find the stator copper losses Psu
i) Find the developped torque Td
j) Find the efficiency
k) Find the starting current Irs and the starting torque Ts
l) Find the slip for maximum torque sm and the maximum torque as well
