The Monarch Story
• 1962: With Waco, developed cellophane tape with BASF chemicals
• 1967: Developed and supplied PVC insulation tape confirming to Defence specifications, tested and
approved by CMIE (Chief Inspector of Military Explosives).
• 1968: Developed polyethylene base underground pipe wrapping tape tested for International standards and
supplied to M/s Indian Oil Corporation.
• 1968: Introduced Barium Chromate saturated tape as anticorrosive wrapping to aluminum conductors.
• 1969: Set up the first paper gum tape manufacturing unit in South India.
• 1971: Designed machine for continuous process of manufacturing tube lamp covers.
• 1980: Developed and manufactured cloth gummed tape, which was used by CFTRI, Mysore, for their food
boxes for Antarctica expedition.
• 1992: For the first time introduced PU, PE foams and aluminum foil tape for no frost refrigerator confirming
to international standards and was exclusive supplied to most of the leading refrigerator manufacturers in
India.
• 1996: Developed for a leading Indian automobile manufacturer chemical impregnated PU foam, which was
earlier imported from Germany. 4

• 2004: PU laminated with velvet cloth wire harnessing tape for Korean import substitution was developed.
• 2005: Developed and introduced PU acoustic foam for DG Set as a replacement for Rockwool and glass wool.
His work in the acoustic field was recognized by the leading DG set manufacturers and ARAI.
• 2007: Specially developed composite foam material for M/s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Trivandrum, for
their space load.
• 2010: First to develop and manufacture PVC/NBR foam in India as sound damping barrier foam in acoustic
requirements.:
• 2011: Developed side mirror holding tape for a leading Japanese car manufacture when most imports failed
to meet their specification.
• 2016: Developed Super-Acoustic foam
• 2021: Developed import substitute for a Korean manufacturer for their PU foam
• 2021: Started delivering customized products specially developed for EV Battery and vehicles
• 2022: Import substitute for VHB tapes for automotive component manufacturer approved.

How tapes are designed
• Adhesion: Adhesion is when a bond is made between two dissimilar
materials i.e., bonding of adhesive tape to substrates. The process of
adhesion is caused by molecular interactions between the substrate
surface and the adhesive.
• Cohesion: Cohesion is the bonding of particles within the adhesive
that holds the adhesive mass together. Cohesive force is due to:
• The chemical bonds within the adhesive polymers.
• The chemical bonds resulting from crosslinking of the polymer.
• The intermolecular interactions between the molecules in the adhesive.
• The mechanical adhesion between various molecules in the adhesive.

• Tackiness: Tack is known as the initial stickiness of the adhesive. It
indicates how quickly a bond is formed when the adhesive is brought
into contact with a surface with very slight pressure. The faster two
surfaces bond, the higher the tack. On the contrary, lower tack allows
an adhesive film or tape to be repositioned. Tack is sensitive to a
variety of factors, including temperature, processing, and the
properties of the adhered surface etc.

• Shear strength: It’s the holding power. The ability of a material to
resist lateral forces that cause it to slide against itself and can be
thought of as one surface sliding over another. It is a measure of the
strength or cohesion of the adhesive.
• Peel strength: It’s the degree of adhesion. It’s the force needed to
break the bond between the adhesive and the surface to which it is
stuck. If it delaminates or rips of from the substrate then it’s stronger
than the substrate.

• Tensile strength: Measure of the elastic property of the adhesive. At what
force will the adhesive move away from the surface.
• UV exposure and aging: With prolonged exposure to UV and sunlight some
adhesives like natural and synthetic rubber become brittle and break.
• Chemical resistance: It is critical to understand the chemicals that the tape
will come into contact with and to tailor a solution that it is compatible.
• Chemistry of the surface: The tape may work on one specific substrate
and fail on others. Sometimes the tape works on a substrate, but when any
changes to the chemistry or condition of the substrate change, the tape
could end up failing. Even a small change can have a major effect.
• Temperature resistance: Max and min temperature it can withstand.
• Dielectric Strength: The voltage that products can withstand without
allowing the passage of current.

Formats of tape
• SINGLE COATED tapes feature an adhesive applied to only one side of
a carrier. The construction of single coated tapes typically has a
backing most often 1-10mils thick and an adhesive thickness of 2-5
mils - though there are exceptions. The tape may be self wound with
a release coating applied to the backing, or it can be with a release
liner. Some single-coated tapes, such as filament tape and duct tape,
also feature reinforcements of woven cloth or glass strands, and
typically are paired with rubber based adhesive systems.
• Examples of single coated tapes are electrical tape, masking tape, carton
sealing tape and most medical tapes.

• DOUBLE COATED tapes are created when an adhesive is coated onto both
sides of a carrier material. The tape is then wound with a release liner,
commonly paper that has been coated on both sides with a silicone release
agent. The carrier is typically a polymeric (film upto 200 micron) film, and
the adhesive (acrylic, rubber, or silicone) may be the same or different on
either side of the carrier, as well as oaring different coating thicknesses.
• Some examples of double coated tapes are bonding and mounting tapes and
membranes
• ADHESIVE TRANSFERS consist of a release liner carrying an unsupported
adhesive. The release liner is generally a paper that has been coated on
both sides with a silicone release agent. Adhesive transfers are often an
acrylic adhesive, but can be made from any type of adhesive.
• Examples of adhesive transfers include tapes for envelope or bag sealing, graphic
attachment, and splicing.

• Have better long-term aging and are more resistant to solvents and environmental factors.

• Applications: Automotive, Aerospace, high performance packaging, sports goods

• Water-based adhesives are developed using a combination of water,
polymers, and additives. These adhesives may be formulated as
solutions and are activated as the water evaporates or is absorbed by
the substrate.
• High tack
• Low VOC
• Ideal for porous or non-porous substrates.
• Applications: Good choice for adhering porous substrates like paper,
cardboard, textiles, woods, food and beverage packaging, book
binding and some plastics.

• Rubber-based adhesives is based on natural or synthetic rubbers and
formulated with tackifying resins, oils and antioxidants.
• Most cost effective PSA and offers quick stick capability.
• Good shear strength
• Good solvent resistance
• Moderate durability
• Not recommended for high heat application.
• Offer water-resistant properties, flexibility, and versatility.
• Deteriorates quickly in outdoor applications.
• Applications: Good choice for use in clothing and footwear manufacturing,
as well as for reinforcing the backing of carpets and floor rugs.

• Silicone adhesives are formulated with Silicone polymers and are the only
adhesive that will bond well with silicone substrates.
• They are relatively expensive
• Have a very low initial tack
• Can better withstand higher temperatures than both rubber and acrylic adhesive
• Its elasticity and other properties remain unchanged at any temperature
• Good ability to bind unlike dissimilar substrates
• Low chemical reactivity and toxicity
• Resistant to moisture and weathering
• Applications: Automobiles, electronics, healthcare, appliances, home
repairs, construction.

• Hot melt adhesives are polymer based, and are thermoplastic in nature, meaning
they are solid at room temperature.
• They do not utilize water or solvents
• Rapid drying and curing, which makes them the more popular kind of industrial adhesive.
• No VOC compounds
• Bonds well to wide range of substrates
• Easy to apply
• Long shelf life
• High melting temperature may damage delicate material
• The viscosity must be fairly low at application temperature to allow good substrate
penetration.

Carrier material for tapes
• Plastic Film/Polymer: Generally, there are two categories of plastics:
thermoplastics and thermosets.
• Thermoplastics have low melting points and low tensile strength. Good adherence to metals,
resistant to chemicals and detergents, good electrical insulation, high impact resistance. PVC
and Acrylic films are good examples of thermoplastics.
• Thermosetting plastics have high melting points and tensile strength. Superb electrical
insulation properties, excellent heat resistance at high temperatures, low thermal
conductivity, high strength-to-weight ratio.
• PET/Polyester: Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)/polyester products use a PET or
polyester backing in the form of a film or laminate. Also known as Mylar. This high
tensile strength and flexibility, good insulation performance, heat resistance,
moisture resistance and chemical stability.

• Glass/Fiberglass: Fiberglass composite material or a glass layer provides
exceptional stability in harsh environments by resisting shrinking, rotting,
or burning.
• Paper: Paper tape products have a paper backing and are also referred as
flat back tape.
• Cloth: A cloth backing often incorporates a woven cloth or a fabric layer for
reinforcement, extra strength and heat resistance properties.
• Felt: Felt or non-woven tapes are often applied to substrates to prevent
scratching.
• Foam: Adhesive-coated foam backing tape contains an adhesive that is
protected by a liner. Foam is often used for sealing, weather-stripping, and
mounting. 49

• Filament: Filament tape, usually referred to as strapping tape, is
composed of thousands of filaments (usually fiberglass) woven into
yarns that are embedded into the adhesive. It is a strong and versatile
material that allows the user to bundle similar or odd-shaped items
together for shipping or storage.
• Metal Foil: Aluminum, aluminum-reinforced and lead backings resist
flames, temperature extremes, and high humidity. Metal tapes are
usually designed for taping joints and seams against moisture or
vapor. Aluminum foil is laminated to paper or plastic films to provide
more strength. Copper foil backing is used in the manufacture of
multilayer printed circuit boards (PCB).

• CUSTOM COATING: We understand adhesives and work with a wide range for different
applications. We can do solvent, water-based, hot melt, transfer adhesives. Depending on the
material and the surface we make them for you. They can be supplied in jumbo rolls, slit rolls,
sheets, die-cut parts.
• CUSTOM LAMINIZATION: Foam, films, foils, non-wovens and textiles can be combined with
adhesive to provide the laminated product required.
• CUSTOM CONVERTING: Multiple in-house conversion options are available. Rapid prototyping
allows for real-life testing and simulation before serial production, minimizing time and costs.
