CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

INTRODUCTION

Social media play a big part in our daily life, not just in terms of communication instead we can also use

social media as a learning tool. We all know that in today's era, technology has been well developed same

with the learning, learning is advance unlike before. With the help of social media, student can learn a lot,

aside from that they can easily utilize social media like Facebook and YouTube, that is just one of the

examples of most accessible Media Platform. Even though kids, 1 year old kid can learn with the help of

social media, that is the first learning tool they used. Especially in high school level, most of their school

work need the help of social media, they can effectively create their Assigned Task by their own. Some of

the teacher also refer their student to social media for better understanding, and if they want to clarify some

part of the lesson where they are having hard time to understand with. Senior High school student

nowadays are very creative, they adopt creativity from social media, they learned a lot from social media so

that they can apply their creativity in their school or academic performance. According to the university of

global Arizona campus, social media promotes self-directed learning, which prepares students to search for

answers and make decisions independently. When reinforced in a classroom setting, these social media

skills can be guided and refined to produce better learning outcomes and critical awareness. Social media

also allows students more freedom to connect and collaborate beyond the physical classroom, which

means students anywhere can start to experience the globally connected world long before they enter the

workforce. Which means that students participate directly in their own learning rather than passively

absorbing information they will most likely forget once the exam is over. Social media shapes and presents

information in a way that makes sense to and excites students more than traditional tools do, whether it's

through a shared article with comment functionality, a livestream of an important event, a survey related to

course materials, or a question posed to the broader community.

Furthermore, sharing posts and information with other students, rather than simply submitting assignments

to the teacher, promotes deeper engagement and better performance from all students. If students know

from the start that they and their peers will interact with course materials and each other on various social

media platforms, they may put in more effort to both their work and online presence.

With the help of Social Media student can learn a lot by their own, most of the Senior high school students

are independent, since they have their own style of learning and social media can really help them a lot.

As a researcher, we will conduct survey to gather data that will support the effectiveness of social media as

learning tool and most of the student are using it to learn aside from the learning from their teachers.

This title caught our attention since we, personally experience and used social media as a learning tool.

Especially in our year level, we have a lot of tasks has been assigned to us that we need to go on extra

miles. Social media are very helpful not just in terms of communication, entertainment, and source of

information but also this is an effective learning tool.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Foreign Studies

Consistent with these benefits, Chaijum (2020) argued that social media and its associated learning

methods such as brainstorming can enhance teamwork skills to improve students’ analysis and problem-

solving skills. During the pandemic, social media platforms are used to search for prevention and

educational information to reduce the effect of this virus on many aspects of society (Khamis & Geng,

2021). Considering the challenges imposed on different societies because of the COVID-19 pandemic

(Tesfamicael & Ayalew, 2021), many educational researchers agree that this pandemic has highlighted the

important role that can be played by online teaching using social media in response to the emergency

lockdowns of educational institutions.

Social media promotes self-directed learning, which prepares students to search for answers and make

decisions independently. When reinforced in a classroom setting, these social media skills can be guided

and refined to produce better learning outcomes and critical awareness. Social media also allows students

more freedom to connect and collaborate beyond the physical classroom, which means students anywhere

can start to experience the globally connected world long before they enter the workforce. Sharing posts

and information with other students, rather than simply submitting assignments to the teacher, promotes

deeper engagement and better performance from all students. If students know from the start that they and

their peers will interact with course materials and each other on various social media platforms, they may

put in more effort to both their work and online presence.

In a study conducted by Al-rahmi and Othman (2013) in Malaysia, the authors explored the use of social

media in teaching and learning among secondary school students. The study found that the majority of the

students used social media as a tool for learning and communication with their teachers and classmates.

The study also found that the use of social media had a positive impact on the students' academic

performance.

Local Studies

According to Jhoselle Tus, the social media platforms help improve the students’ academic performance

and increase their knowledge through gathering data and information. The learner support system plays an

important role in making sure that students have ways to communicate with the MOOCs facilitators. UPOU

MODeL provided different tools for students to discuss their MOOCs-related concerns through Facebook

Group, MODeL LMS, and email. This study showed how social media (Learning Management System

(LMS), Facebook page, and Email) were used as communication and learner support tools to address

various MOOCs-related inquiries. The results of the study showed that the questions asked through

Facebook Group are preferable for Administrative-related matters.

The biggest advantage of social media is better communication. A student can connect with anyone at any

point in time via Kids Messenger or WhatsApp. They can use such platforms via their smartphone, tablet or

computer, and learners can exchange questions, make phone calls or video calls. If a student is stuck with

their homework, they can always communicate with their friends or tutors. They don't need to wait and meet

the teacher physically. Social media promote learning by offering support with sharing documents as well

such as via Google Drive Box, Google Docs. Some teachers even connect with their class via Facebook

live.
CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study is a non-experimental under a correlational research design, that is used to examine the

relationship between two or more variables. In a correlational study, the researchers do not manipulate or

control any of them.

Sampling and Participants of the Study

The respondents of the study are students in SHS San Nicholas III. Using random sampling, the

researchers will select the respondents. Because the respondents are people who self-selected to

participate in the survey, the researchers will utilize voluntary sampling to collect their data

Research instruments

The researchers used an Likert-scale questionnaire, and deliver the survey through face to face, the

respondents answered it based on their opinion and experiences in how social media helps as learning

communication tool. Survey questionnaires will be used by the researchers to perform this investigation.

This includes the initial blanks needed for the demographic profile such as the name, age, and grade level.
Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers began by developing the statement of the problem and questionnaire. The teacher must

validate the questionnaire after it has been produced. After the teacher validates the interview questions,

the researchers conduct a ten questions interview survey with students in SHS in San Nicholas III. The

researchers communicated with the respondents through face to face in school. The researcher’s data

collection took one week. Researchers gathered, reviewed, and interpreted all of the data from the

interview survey once the respondents completed the survey questionnaire.

Once the researchers have finished examining the responses of the respondents, the researcher develops

the study's conclusion and recommendations based on the data acquired.

Ethical Consideration/Issues

The researchers are responsible for safeguarding all the information given by the participants. The

researchers will ensure that all to be disclosed would not be misused, misunderstood, or misinterpreted to

harm other people.

Statistical Treatment of data

In order to clearly analyze the data, the researcher’s used slovin’s formula to gather a data (N) the size of

population.
