Fundamentals of Statics
1. Define:
(i) Moment of a force,
(ii) Couple of forces,
(iii) Resultant force,
(iv) Equilibrant force.
2. Write the equilibrium conditions for
(i) Colinear forces,
(ii) Coplanar - concurrent forces,
(iii) Coplanar - nonconcurrent forces.
3. State and explain:
(i) The law of parallelogram of forces,
(ii) The triangle law of forces,
(iii) The law of Polygon of forces,
(iv) Varignon’s theorem
4. State and explain The Lami’s theorem.
5. Find the magnitude of the two forces such that they act at right angles, their resultant is N but if
they act at 60° their resultant is N.
6. A rope AB is connected to a ceiling as shown in figure. Two loads; W and 20 kN are suspended such that
CD part of the rope remains horizontal. Determine the load W.
7. Determine the equilibrant force F for the system of forces shown in figure. Use Lami’s theorem.
8. Find (i) Analytically and (ii) Graphically the magnitude, direction and position with respect to Point C of
the resultant force of the system of forces as shown in figure.
10. Determine the forces in the tick marked (√) members. Use method of section.
Assignment – III
Centroid and moment of inertia and mass moment of inertia
1. Determine the centroid of following 1 – D and 2 – D elements.
5. Draw shear force and bending moment diagram of the beams loaded as show in Figure – 1, 2, and 3.

6. Draw shear force and bending moment diagram for the beams loaded as show in figure – 1 and 2. Find the
maximum shear force and bending moment in the beam. Determine the point of contraflexure, if any.
Show the sign convention followed while drawing the shear force and bending moment diagram.

7. Determine shear force and bending moment at section X1 and X2 of the beam loaded as shown in figure.
8. Figure shows the shear force diagram of a simply supported beam. Judge the loading on the beam and
draw bending moment diagram for the beam.

Simple stresses and strains
1. Define and explain significance of following terms/quantities.
(i) Axial stress,

2. Explain:
(i) Prismatic element,
(ii) Isotropic material,
(iii) Homogeneous material,
(iv) Composite material.
3. A short hollow Cast iron cylindrical column of height 2.5m, external diameter 150mm and the wall
thickness 8mm is to carry an axial load of 400kN. Determine the stress in the material and compression of
the column. Take E = 1.30e05 N/mm2.
4. A 450mm long bar has first length AB of 150 mm having 50 mm square section while middle 150 mm
length BC has 25 mm diameter and the last 150 mm length CD has 50 mm diameter of the section. It is
loaded as shown in figure. Determine the stress in each portion of the bar and the change in length of the
bar. Take modulus of elasticity E as 2 X 105 N/mm2.
5. A member is formed by connecting a steel bar to an aluminium bar end to end as shown in figure.
Calculate the thrust required to have decrease in length equal to 0.3 mm. Take ES = 2 X 105 MPa for steel
and EAl = 0.7 X 105 MPa for aluminium.
6. A solid steel cylinder is encased in a hollow circular copper tube as Shown in figure. The cylinder and
the tube are compressed between the rigid plates by compressive force of 600 kN. The length of
composite bar is 2.5 m. Determine (i) the compressive forces and stresses in steel cylinder and copper
tube, (ii) the compressive strain in steel cylinder and copper tube and (iii) the shortening of the assembly.
Take Es = 2.0 X 105 N/mm2, Ec = 1.2 X 105 N/mm2.
Assignment – VI
Principal stresses
1. A bar with square cross section with 5 cm side is loaded by an axial tensile load of 2.5kN. Determine the
normal and shear stresses on inclined plane having inclination (Theta) Ɵ of its normal with the axis of the
member. Tabulate the values of normal and shear stresses for different values of Theta(Ɵ) and plot the
variation of normal and shear stresses on inclined planes against Theta(Ɵ). Draw your conclusions from
the results obtained as above.
2. Define principal plane and principal stress. Determine the principal planes and principal stresses for the
bar loaded as shown in figure. Also find the stresses on at least 2 inclined planes. Draw Mohr’s stress
circle and show the position of inclined planes and stresses on it.
Assignment – VII
Stresses in Beams
1. Write the assumptions taken in the theory of simple bending. Derive simple bending formula
in popular notations.
2. Define:
(i) Bending stress,
(ii) Neutral axis, and
(iii) Section modulus.
3. A simply supported beam of span 4.0 m having uniform section of size 200 mm width and 400 mm depth
is loaded with uniformly distributed load of 30 kN/m over entire span. Determine the maximum bending
moment along the span and draw the bending stress distribution across the section.
4. Two 120 mm X 30 mm timber sections are glued together to form a “T” section for a simply supported
beam as shown in figure. A sagging moment of 6 kN-m is applied to this beam about the horizontal axis
through the centroid. Determine the stresses at the extreme fibers and the total tension and compression
force.
5. A simply supported beam of span 6.0 m is loaded as shown in figure. It has cross section as shown in
figure. Determine the permissible uniformly distributed load “w”; on the beam if permissible strength in
compression is 30 MPa and in tension is 60 MPa.
6. Derive the formula for shear stress distribution in a rectangular beam section.
7. A “T” section has a flange 165 mm X 12.5 mm and web 187.5 mm X 8 mm. It is used as a beam over
span of 5.0 m to carry uniform load of 15 kN/m. Sketch the shear stress distribution at the section of
maximum shear force.
8. Draw qualitative shear stress distribution across the section used for beams as shown in figure. Mention
the important features of the stress distribution in each case.
Assignment – VIII
Torsion
1. Derive the torsion formula for cylindrical shaft. State the assumptions taken in derivation of torsion
formula. Define the torsional rigidity.
2. A solid circular shaft has to transmit 300 kW power at 200 r.p.m. The limiting shear stress is 60 N/mm2
and the permissible angle of twist is 1° in 3.0 m length of the shaft. Determine the minimum diameter of
shaft required to transmit the power. Take G = 0.8 X 105 N/mm2.
