Think

Question 1
Why does Nehru feel that it is difficult to praise Gandhi? Cite evidence from paragraphs 1 and 2 to support your
answer.
CCSS:  RI.9-10.1
CA-CCSS:  CA.RI.9-10.1

Exemplary Response

Nehru feels that Gandhi was a man with “divine fire” whose life and leadership were so great that no one is
worthy to praise him. Nehru feels that it almost does Gandhi “an injustice to pass him by with words.”

Question 2
According to Nehru, what things made Gandhi suffer? Support your answer with evidence from paragraph 2.
CCSS:  RI.9-10.1
CA-CCSS:  CA.RI.9-10.1

Exemplary Response

Gandhi’s promotion of nonviolence clashed with extremists’ push to war against Britain for India’s
independence. Nehru believes that Gandhi suffered from followers who “went away from the path” he had
shown them.

Question 3
Nehru states that the people of India “stand on this perilous edge of the present, between that past and the
future.” What perils does Nehru list? Cite evidence from paragraph 4 to support your response.
CCSS:  RI.9-10.1
CA-CCSS:  CA.RI.9-10.1

Exemplary Response

India is torn between the past, represented by Gandhi’s vision of a peaceful separation from Britain, and the
future, which is unclear. To Nehru, the most dangerous peril is the Indian people’s lack of faith and frustration
at crumbled ideals.

Question 4
Use context clues to determine the meaning of the word eminent as it is used in the text. Write your definition
here, and explain which clues helped you arrive at it.
CCSS:  L.9-10.4.A
CA-CCSS:  CA.L.9-10.4a
CA-ELD:  ELD.PI.9-10.6.c.Br, ELD.PI.9-10.6.c.Em, ELD.PI.9-10.6.c.Ex

Exemplary Response

Nehru is comparing Gandhi to men who “have monuments in bronze and marble.” The use of eminent to
describe people honored to this degree suggests that eminent means “influential” or “important” and must be
a synonym for great.

Question 5
The word illumine in paragraph 3 comes from the Latin verb illuminare, meaning “to light up.” By knowing the
Latin root of the word, use context clues to determine the meaning of illumine. Write your definition here, and
explain how you figured out its meaning.
CCSS:  L.9-10.4.B
CA-CCSS:  CA.L.9-10.4b
CA-ELD:  ELD.PI.9-10.6.c.Br, ELD.PI.9-10.6.c.Em, ELD.PI.9-10.6.c.Ex

Exemplary Response

Based on the Latin root illuminare and context clues, illumine must mean ‘to light.” The word describes what
will happen to “this land again” if the Indian people follow Gandhi’s teachings, in contrast to the “darkness”
since his death.
