1. Differentiate between the laboratory thermometer and the clinical thermometer.

A.

Clinical Thermometer Laboratory Thermometer

different substances.
human body.
iii. Usually, it does not have a kink.
iii. It has a kink which prevents the
immediate back flow of mercury.

2. What precautions should be observed while reading a clinical thermometer?

A. The precautions to be observed while reading a clinical thermometer are:
i. Thermometer should be washed before and after use, preferably with an antiseptic
solution.
ii. Before use it should be ensured that the mercury level is below 35°C.
iii. Thermometer should be read by keeping the level of mercury along the line of sight.
iv. It should be handled with care. If it hits against some hard object, it can break.
v. It should not be held by the bulb while reading it.

3. Why does the mercury not fall or rise in a clinical thermometer when taken out
of the mouth?
A. Clinical thermometer has a kink near the bulb which prevents the mercury level from
falling on its own.

4. What is the advantage of digital thermometer over mercuric thermometer?

A. Digital thermometer does not use mercury, as mercury is a toxic substance and is very
difficult to dispose of if a thermometer breaks.

5. What happens when heat falls on an object?

A. When heat falls on any object, a part of it is reflected, a part of it is absorbed and a part
of it is transmitted.

6. What is conduction?
A. The process of transfer of heat in solids, in which the heat energy is transferred from
the hotter end to the colder end of the object without the actual movement of particles, is
known as conduction.

7. How does heat transfer take place in liquids?

A. When a liquid is heated, the liquid molecules near the flame gets hot.
- Hot liquid molecules rise.
- The cold-liquid molecules from the sides move down towards the source of heat.
- These molecules also get hot and rise and the liquid from the sides moves down.

- This process continues till the whole liquid gets heated.
- This mode of heat transfer is known as Convection.

8. In places of hot climate, it is advised that the outer walls of houses be painted
white. Explain.
A. Houses which are painted white or with light colours stay cooler in summer as white or
light colour reflects back most of the heat that falls on it.
- Hence, a light colour tends to keep the house cool.

9. Wearing more layers of clothing during winters keeps us warmer than wearing
just one thick piece of clothing. Give reason.
A. During winters, we prefer wearing more layers of clothing than just one thick piece of
clothing because air gets trapped in between the clothing layers.
- Being a poor conductor of heat, air prevents heat loss from our body.

10. Explain Sea breeze and Land breeze with the help of a diagram.
A. i. Sea breeze
- During the day the land warms up more than the sea. The hot air rises upward.
- To take its place, the cooler air from the sea moves towards the land.
- This convection current from the sea to the land is called sea breeze.

ii. Land breeze

- After sunset land loses heat faster than the sea water.
- So, the air over the sea is warmer at night.
- The warm air over the sea rises up and the cooler air from the land starts moving
towards the sea to take its place.
- The convection current from the land to the sea is called land breeze.
