CHAPTER I

Background of the Study

This chapter presents of introduction, statement of the problem, scope and

limitation, and significance of the study.

Introduction

Grades have significant part in the life the students and they give motivation to

students to strive a better performance in the respective subjects. Apparently, most of

the students nowadays consider Math to be a difficult and mind-boggling subject to

learn. A report published by Philippine News Agency dated on September 12, 2022

stating that Philippines came out last in both Mathematics and Science in the 2019

Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study out of 58 countries.

This study endeavored to investigate the trends of the grades in Mathematics of

the Grade-7 students in the third quarter. It aspired to analyze the measures of the

central tendency, dispersion, and position of the grades.

Statement of the Problem

This study focused on the family size of the students of Northeastern Mindanao

Academy. Thus, it aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the average family size of the Grade – 11 students?

2. What is the median of the family size of the Grade – 11 students?

3. What is the most common family size among the grade – 11 students?

4. What is the dispersion among the family size of the Grade – 11 students?

5. What is the 1st quartile family size of the Grade – 11 students?

6. What is the 7th decile of the family size of the Grade – 11 students?

7. What is the 90th percentile family size of the grade – 11 students?

Scope and Limitation

This study focused to investigate the trends in family size of the Grade-11

students of Northeastern Mindanao Academy of the Seventh-day Adventist, Inc. who

are enrolled in the S.Y 2022-2023. This research investigated the trends of the Math

grades using measures of the central tendency, dispersion, and position.

Significance of the Study

The outcome of the study will give beneficial to the following individuals:

Students. This study will inform them about the family size as a whole.

Teachers. This study will help the teacher see the trends of his/her students.
CHAPTER II

Methodology

This chapter consists of research design, research locale, participants of the

study, sampling design, data gathering procedure, and data analysis.

Research Design

This study used descriptive quantitative research design because it aims to

investigate the trends of Family size of the Grade–11 students of Northeastern

Mindanao Academy of the Seventh-day Adventist, Inc.

Research Locale

This study was undertaken at Northeastern Mindanao Academy (NEMA) of the

Seventh-day Adventist, Inc. It is situation at P-10, Los Angeles, Butuan City, Agusan del

Norte. The school offers a complete Junior High School level and Senior High School

level with strands STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics); ABM

(Accountancy, Business and Management); and HUMSS (Humanities and Social

Sciences).

Participants of the Study

There were 164 Grade-11 students who are enrolled at NEMA in S.Y 2022-2023.

The Grade-11 students were clustered based on the respective sections: Chalcedony,

Carnelian, Jade, and Jacinth. The number of Grade-11 students who became

participants of the student was diminished to 58 due to the absence of some students

during the survey was conducted. The table below shows the number of actual

participants of the study.

Grade-11 Section Number of Participants

Chalcedony 17

Jacinth 15
Jade 5

Carnelian 20

Participants

Sampling Design

Purposive sampling method was used to in this study in which the participants

are selected based on their grade level. The participants of the study were asked about

the number of members they have in their family in S.Y 2022-2023.

Data Gathering Procedure

The following steps were followed during the data gathering:

1. Ask permission from the Grade-11 advisers to conduct a survey among his/her

students.

2. The researchers asked the present Grade-11 students about their Family size.

3. After the number of family size is being given, each of Grade-11 student will write

their section and signature on the data survey sheet.

Data Analysis

The study used the following statistical formulas to answer the statement of the

problem:

Measures of the Central Tendency. This study used the mean, median, and mode to

provide an accurate description of the entire ungrouped data.

Measures of Dispersion. This study used the variance to find the distribution of data in

a population from a mean, and the standard deviation to determine the data distribution

in a population of the ungrouped data.

Measures of Position. This study used the quartiles, deciles, and percentiles in

determining the position of a single value in relation to other values in a given set of an

ungrouped data.
CHAPTER III

Results and Interpretations

This chapter showcases of solutions and interpretations of the data with respect

to the statement of the problem that this study endeavored to answer. The solutions

were derived from an ungrouped data.
