READING COMPREHENSION ACTIVITY 1
‘EUROPE SHOULD SUPPORT TECH COMPANIES’
Google's CEO Larry Page has said Europe needs to be like Silicon Valley and support technology
companies. Many famous tech companies have their headquarters in Silicon Valley. Mr Page
said technology companies can do business easily there. He told a British newspaper that it was
easy to invest in science in Silicon Valley and to start new technology companies. He said
Europe needed to start investing in big ideas.
Mr Page said he had $62 billion to invest in new ideas. He wants to help societies in Europe. He
is thinking about how the money can change the world. Other business leaders also say Europe
is slow to invest in technology. Experts want European schools to focus on technology. Children
in Silicon Valley have better tech skills. Many teachers think elementary schools should have
coding classes for children.

SIMPLE PAST VERB ‘TO BE’
Look at the photo of the Sinclair C5. What do you think it is?
The Sinclair C5 was a small electric vehicle with a top speed of 25 kph. The battery was big
enough for trips of 10-20 km, and there were pedals just in case there wasn’t enough power to
get you home. The idea for the C5 was based on a simple fact: most car trips are just a few
kilometres, with only one person in the vehicle. In other words, cars are too big for their main
use. The C5’s small size and low cost weren’t the only advantages: with electric power,
pollution was zero. So why was the C5 such a failure? Was it too advanced for the consumers
of 1985?
3- Was it expensive?

APOLLO 13
On April 11th 1970, James Lovell, John Swigert and Fred Haise put on
their space suits, sat in Apollo 13 and said goodbye to Earth. The plan was
to walk on the moon, do a number of biological experiments and take
photos.
But while they were travelling, something went wrong - really wrong.
There was an explosion on Apollo 13, which destroyed important
equipment. Lovell contacted Earth and said the famous line, ‘Houston, we
have a problem.’
Apollo 13 started losing oxygen, electricity and water. Back on Earth the
NASA engineers told Lovell, Swigert and Haise what to do and the
astronauts built important pieces of equipment using just their hands.
With only a little oxygen left, it was a race against time. Finally, while the
world was watching on TV, they returned home from space and landed
safely in the ocean. The story was later made into a film, Apollo 13.
