B. MOTIVATION
Today, we will be playing Hangman. The rules of
the game are simple. Listen carefully. I will be the
host of the game and you, class, will be the word

guessers. The words that you will guess are the

names of countries all over the world. You will be
guessing letter by letter. Here in our whiteboard, I
will be drawing the blanks which will indicate how
many letters the name of the country has. If you
guessed wrong, like you have guessed the wrong
letter or name, I will be drawing one part of the
hangman. I will be giving clues through mentioning
the customs and beliefs of the country given. The
round ends when someone guessed the correct
word. Yes, Ma’am.

Is that clear?

Intercultural Communication.
C. PRESENTATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE LESSON (Linguistic and Visual)
(Teacher writes the term “Intercultural
Communication”)
Class, please read. Intercultural Communication.

Let us define Intercultural Communication through

dissecting the term. Dissecting means we are
going to divide the term into certain parts.

First part, inter-. What type of word is inter-?” A prefix.

Great. It is a prefix, a word placed before another

word.

What do you mean by inter-?” It may mean between or among, Ma’am.

“Yes. Between or among, that is correct. Next, we It is a word that means relating to someone’s
have cultural. What do we mean by cultural?” ideas, customs, and social behavior.

Correct. In a shorter sense, it is relating to culture.

And culture is considered as a way of life. And
finally, communication. Communication is a
process conveying and sharing of information.

Now, with all these information on the board, how Intercultural communication is a process of
can we define intercultural communication as a conveying information between people that
whole? practice different cultures.”

Precisely, thank you. Intercultural communication

happens when individuals interact, negotiate, and
create meanings while bringing in their varied
cultural backgrounds. That is according to Ting-
Toomey.
10/11/22

Let’s talk about culture. Who can define culture? It is the customs, arts, social institutions, and
Yes. achievements of a particular nation, people, or
other social group.

“Very good. Culture is the customs, arts, social

institutions, and achievements of a particular
nation, people, or other social group. Culture can
also mean the way of living. Therefore, culture
does not only revolve around what nations
practice. Culture can be around gender, age,
ethnicities, economic class, sexual orientation,
race, and religion. What do you think, class, is the
goal of intercultural communication? To understand someone’s culture.
To establish courtesy.
To break boundaries.

All your answers are correct class. Intercultural

communication aims to transform one’s awareness
about one’s culture. It is also important to know
intercultural communication so as to respect the
diversity of people. We all know that every human
being has their own unique features and
characteristics, as well as cultures practiced. We
must respect each other’s differences and treat
each other equally since we are all humans, right
class?” Yes, Ma’am.

An example of intercultural communication is when

in a hotel establishment, the hoteliers assess their
customers' requirements, tastes, and provide
services accordingly. The customers also inform
the hoteliers of their needs. Another example is
when Christians, like me, talk to our Muslim
brothers and sisters. Effective intercultural
communication occurs when we consider their
cultural and religious background. Sometimes,
intercultural communication can flow smoothly and
become very interesting for a cross-cultural group.
However, things may not go as planned when
communication is disrupted by cultural collisions.
For example, let’s talk about the language
differences of Aklanon and Cebuano. The word
sabot may sound vulgar to us Aklanons because it
directly translates to English as pubic hair, in
Cebuano, it means ‘to understand’.
Do you have any example similar to what I just For example, Ma’am, the word ne ga in Korean
gave?” means you in English but when the word is
10/11/22

mentioned in an English-speaking community, it

would sound like you are racist because it sounds
like the slur used by white supremacists or racists
to describe or address black people.”

Good example. Another example class is the word

Moron in Welsh, the language of people from
Wales, means carrot in English. But when the
Moron is used in an English speaking community,
it would be misunderstood because you would
sound like you are insulting or offending someone.

Let us now proceed to the Developmental Model of The Developmental Model of Intercultural
Intercultural Sensitivity or DMIS. Please read the Sensitivity (DMIS) offers a structure that explores

discover how people learn to adapt and accept the
cultural diversity of one another. First we have
denial. Please read.

Thank you. In this stage, we can say that a person

is considered ignorant about cultural differences.
“All cities are the same; they all have tall buildings,
fast food chains, and coffee shops,” says the
person who is in the denial stage. The next stage Stage 2: Defense. The individual starts to
is called Defense. Kindly read.” recognize cultural differences and is intimidated by
them, resulting in either a superior view on own
culture or an unjustified high regard for the new
one.

Thank you. During the defense stage, class, a

person starts to grow out of ignorance and tries to
understand culture. However, he or she may
consider the equality of culture and sees each as
either superior or inferior from one another. ““Their
ways are better than my own; I wish I were one of
them,” says the person who is in the defense
stage. Please read the definition of the third stage. Stage 3: Minimization. Although individuals see
cultural differences, they bank more on the
universality of ideas rather than on cultural
differences.

Thank you. In this stage, the person already sees

cultures as equal to one another, however, he or
she only sees what is similar among them and
10/11/22

does not try to understand cultural differences.

““Once we see through the cultural differences, we
really are just the same!” says the person in the
stage of minimization. Stage 4: Acceptance. The
individual begins to appreciate important cultural
differences in behaviors and eventually in values.
As its term implies, the person starts to recognize
and value the differences, the diversity, and
distinctiveness of our culture. “These people and I
have different values and experiences, and I think
we can learn from one another,” says the person in
the stage of acceptance. Kindly read the fifth Stage 5: Adaptation. The individual is very open to
stage.” world views when accepting new perspectives.

Thank you. In this stage, class, the person does

not only know how to accept the cultural
differences of one another, he or she also knows
how to adapt or adjust for other people with
different culture. “To address our issue, I have to
adjust my approach to consider both my own and
my counterpart’s background,” says the person
who is in the stage of adaptation.

“And finally, Stage 6: Integration. Individuals start

to go beyond their own cultures and see
themselves and their actions based on multifarious
cultural viewpoints. In this stage, class, the person
has thoroughly understood how diverse
everybody’s cultures are. They are able to
thoroughly adjust in various contexts outside their
own culture. They are sensitive to things or issues
regarding other cultures. “I can look at things from
the perspective of various cultures,” says the
person who is in the integration stage.

Do you now understand the six stages of DMIS? Yes, Ma’am.

Do you have any questions? “None, so far.”

“Let us proceed to our next topic. Here we have

the characteristics that a competent intercultural
communicator should possess. An intercultural
communicator is someone who is flexible enough
to tolerate the high levels of uncertainty. He or she
is mindful of all the things that he or she is saying
or doing. It is important for him or her to be open-
minded and sensitive, especially on the culture of
10/11/22

others. He or she knows how to adapt on certain

situations where the culture of other people is
involved. He or she knows how to think creatively
and think how each system influences each other.
And lastly, an intercultural communicator knows
the word ‘respect’. Meaning they are polite. Is that
clear class? “Yes, Ma’am.”

The next topic that we will be discussing is the

things to do to refrain from showing bias or
favoritism when talking to someone with a different
culture. First, avoid stereotypes. Why do we have Stereotypes are formed opinions about a person
to avoid stereotypes, class? that are not based on actual experience or reason
and could lead to favoring one person or group
against another.

Good answer. What are examples of stereotypes, For example, girls should play with dolls and boys
class? should play with trucks.

That’s a good example. Not only that it is a

stereotype, it is also a sexist remark because you
are dictating someone on what you think they
should to do based on their gender. Do you think No, Ma’am. Because girls can play with toy trucks
that this stereotype is correct, class? too.”

That’s right. And boys can play with dolls as well.

Another example of a stereotype is that Asians are
good in math. Do you agree that everyone in Asia
who are Asians are math experts? No, Ma’am! Although, yes, there are some Asians
who are good in math, there are also other people
who excel in different subjects like English and
Science.

“Great point. Alright, next - challenge gender

norms; avoid using “he” and “man” to refer to a
general group of people.
To remedy this, you may use plural pronouns or
rewrite a sentence to avoid using pronouns.
The use of his/her is also acceptable. Who can
give an example of a plural pronoun?” They. Them. Their.

You are all correct. We can consider them as a

set, and call them gender-neutral pronouns. This is
in consideration class to people from the third
gender or from the LGBTQ+ community. He/She is
fine, however, it is more inclusive and conducive to
understanding when we use they/them pronouns.
10/11/22

What do you think is the reason for this? People may not want to be referred with he or she
pronouns.
Some people do not consider themselves as a
man or a woman.
Great answers. It is important nowadays to accept
our fellows from the LGBTQ+ Community in order
to create a harmonious society. Next, do not talk
down on younger people and the elderly. Or on
simple word, do not be rude. Always know the
respect regardless of age. Next, be sensitive to the
religious practices of others. How are we going to
do this class? Respect the religious symbols they use to
celebrate and worship. If you are invited to
participate, ask politely for their suggestions about
how you can do so appropriately.
That’s a good answer. Class, remember that we
should not be afraid to ask questions. In fact, they
would be happy to help you and even suggest the
right and appropriate things for you to do. Asking
questions also avoid help you avoid doing the
wrong things that would make you look ignorant of
someone’s religion or culture. Is that clear?
Yes, Ma’am.
Lastly, be polite at all times; do not belittle people
you perceive to be on a lower social class than
you. The bare minimum among all of the tips
mentioned, but many people tend to not practice
such trait. What is important is that you start to
practice politeness within you, so that when you
show it to other people, it may affect them, and
then they would do the same.

Are there any questions regarding all the topics we

have discussed? None, Ma’am.

Very good! I think you are now ready for our next
activity. Always bear in mind the things we have
discussed because someday, you’re going to
encounter these things. I hope that you will apply
what you have learned today.
D. APPLICATION (LINGUISTIC,
INTERPERSONAL, AND VISUAL-
SPATIAL)
Now, group yourselves in five or six. We will be
having three groups with five members and two

groups with six members. Five groups all in all.

For the first part of this group activity, imagine that
you are in a group of individuals of different
nationalities. Then, you are going to think of a
business that you are interested to put up. Give it a
creative name. And then, discuss with your
groupmates what the business is about, who your
prospective clients are, and why you put up such
business. In this activity class, we will see if you
can utilize your intercultural communication skills.
You will use the materials I have told you to bring
beforehand to present your business. Do you have

any questions?
Yes, you can choose selling products or services,
it depends on what the group has agreed upon.
I will be giving you twenty minutes to discuss and
create an output with your groupmates. After that,
you will be presenting the business that you will be
proposing. All of the members of the group must
take part during the presentation. Ma’am, how are we going to present our business?

Let us just say that I, together with your

classmates, will be a potential customer of your
business. How are you going to convince us to buy
your products and services considering that we
have distinct cultures? That question will serve as
your guide in presenting your business to us. In
short, salestalk. Use your convincing powers. Your

In addition class, in that twenty minutes, you can

face of the business that someone is running. It

representations like symbols.

Well said. You will plan for what will be the logo, or
as mentioned, the face of your business. You
manifest your creativity on your logo. It can be on
any form, digital or not, as long as it is creatively
done. It must also have an explanation behind the

Yes, you can, class. The deadline will be on
Thursday, October 20.
If there are no other questions, your time starts
now.
We talked about intercultural communication.
