The break up of the Soviet Union have a large impact on the economies of the Caucasus and Central Asian nations it's
pollution like excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers has left soil, running water, and groundwater highly
contaminated. Another problem is that heavy doses of chemical fertilizers and pesticides used in the production of
cotton created serious health risks for workers. The drive to develop oil, natural gas, and mineral resources of the
Central Asian nations may also increase stress on sensitive ecosystems.
