INTRODUCTION
^ STROLOGY is one of the most ancient of all
JgpSf sciences, dating back to the beginning of civili-
zation, and in its rudimentary form probably co-
incident with the invention of flint implements,
Pfapv pottery, and bows and arrows.
At the present time it is not recognized by the orthodox
sciences. The division came between astrology and the
other sciences in the beginning of the European awaken-
ing after the Dark Ages. The cause of the split was that
the new developments of science were entirely objective
and material, The new scientific spirit confined itself to
the consideration of mechanical, physical and chemical
problems. The new sciences, after the Dark Ages, had
t» make headway against powerful opposition of ecclesi-
astical and philosophical inertia, and that contest has
been covertly proceeding even to the present day, as wit-
ness the Evolutionary trial in Tennessee a few years past.
The scientific spirit is not to be blamed for choosing
to limit its work, because progress was hastened by con-
centration upon a limited field, but as scientific investi-
gation exhausts its curiosity and reduces the unknown
relationships in the field of material phenomena, inevit-
ably comes the necessity of considering higher relation-
ships, due to the fact that man himself is not a mechan-
ical automaton, but is endowed with will and intelligence.
As even the material scientists will admit, man is a
product of the Universe in which he exists, and therefore
it would be doubtful if he could possess that which the
Universe from which he sprung did not already possess.
Therefore the assumption that man is the highest intelli-
gence in the Universe is a manifest absurdity, of the same
nature as that something should come out of nothing, or
10 HORAKY ASTROLOGY
that a part can be greater than the whole, or that an in-
ferior can produce a superior. Absurdities need no ar-
gument for their refutation because no one gains credit
by supporting them.
Astrology, because in the beginning it deals with man-
kind as a product of the Universal Soul and Intelligence,
splits off immediately from the methods of investigation
of the orthodox sciences, However it is even now ap-
parent that the sciences recognized and lauded in the
nineteenth century will not suffice to satisfy the intelli-
gence and curiosity of the twentieth century. The science
•f the twentieth century is becoming metaphysical even
as the religion is becoming materialistic.
Astrology deals with the most imponderable things in
the world : the spirit, the soul and the intelligence of man.
Astrology traces the relationships of these imponderables
into man's physical body, into his fate, fortune and en-
vironment, and into his character in action.
Astrology is often classed in the public mind with
fortune-telling. In public libraries for example, astro-
logical books are often classed with those treating of
magic, spiritualism, and other mystical subjects. For-
tunately astrology is not a mysterious subject that re-
quires any occult powers, or any unusual condition of
mind, or any l*ng training in concentration of purpose,
or power of visualization, such as some of the subjects
above mentioned require. An astrologer does not close
his eyes and go into a trance when he is reading a horo-
scope. He does not go into a dark room and shut out the
light and wait for mysterious sounds or mystical phen-
omena, nor does he seek to invoke symbols or phantasms
of the mind. He deals with that which is open and ap-
parent to all who have eyes to see and his methods of
reasoning arc as clear as any of the objective scientists.
INTRODUCTION 11
Astrology goes further than any of the other modern
sciences have yet attempted, in that it connects up
thought generated in the mind of man with the Universe
in which he lives as the essential background and stim-
ulus of whatever thought is generated. Moreover, in
Horary Astrology we are dealing with that particular
¥ranch of astrology that has been responsible for a large
amount of the prejudice that now exists against the whole
subject of astrology.
We cannot deny that Horary Astrology is a system of
divination, a system of prognostication which claims to
come from a Divine source and to lie assisted ky Divine
Power and Intelligence. Therefore, in the beginning, it
might be necessary to draw the distinction between div-
ination by Horary Astrology and divinatitn by other
systems that have been practiced.
Perhaps the oldest form of divination was the casting
of lots, familiar to most people in the story of Jonah,
where the crew cast lots to sec who was responsible for
the storm that was threatening all their lives, and the
Bible writer indicates that their system was correct in
that it pointed to Jonah. While this may not be evidence
to modern thinkers of the truth of the method of casting
of lots, it is simply adduced here as an evidence of the an-
cient belief in that system. One of the most ancient
systems of divination was by dreams, and this has been
"pooh poohed" for the last hundred years by materialistic
scientists as entirely without foundation, till Freud ex-
amined the question and showed by demonstration that
dreams were not the senseless things they had previously
been thought, but always had a practical purpose when
viewed from the standpoint of what we might call the
subconscious mind. Now "subconscious mind" is a new
term or euphemism for what in olden days was called
the soul. Freud did not dare call it soul because he
12 HORARY ASTROLOGY
would excite the prejudices of his contemporarj' scien-
tists if he used such a word as might carry a religious
significance; therefore, he used the word, "psyche."
In addition to dreams and the casting of lots we have
had direct vision or prophecy or inspiration, and still
other systems of a more mechanical nature, such as
geomancy and cartomancy.
In all systems of divination it is necessary to use some
means of expressing the quality of intuition. And this
method in its lowest form may he purely mechanical in
operation as in casting of lots. In its highest form, in-
spiration or direct prophecy, it is pure intuition acting
through the physical brain of the prophet or inspired one.
Horary Astrology is an intermediary form of the two
extremes and depends for success upon a sympathetic
nature and a clear mind in which judgment, or reason, is
king.
The apparent fault with fortune-telling, by which it is
condemned, and in most countries it is illegal at the
present time, is that it is unreliable, and being in the
hands of superstitious, or ignorant and possibly immoral
persons, may be used to delude the gullible and lead
astray the credulous and the simple. The powers that be
desire a monoply of this privilege and treat these fortune-
tellers as the bootleggers of the science of divination. We
do not here enter a plea for their recognition or protec-
tion. What we do claim is that there is a true science of
divination and that Horary Astrology is one road leading
to that true science; that the enlightened soul can foresee
the future according to the degree of her enlightenment.
The enlightenment conies from the spirit, in the sense
used by St. Paul when he said, "For in Him we live and
move and have our being." The true practice of astrol-
ogy depends upon enlightenment of soul in the light of
the purposes and methods and laws of the Spirit. It is
INTRODUCTION 13
hence a deeply religious subject as well as a scientific
one, and cannot ke successfully practiced by the careless
or the ignorant or the unscrupulous. The laws of its
own action will inevitably bring to destruction those who
practice it unworthily.
Horary Astrology can prove by its successful prog-
nostication that human minds are connected with the
Universal Mind. Men are separate in their physical
bodies from each other, but in their minds they are con-
stantly in contact. The various schools of mysticism,
occultism and metaphysics have been trying to teach
this fact intensively for the last forty years; trying to
teach people that they arc responsible for what they
think; that their thoughts go out and affect other people
without necessarily being clothed in the spoken or written
word, but by radiation, as from the broadcasting station.
Astrologers do not think of the stars and planets as
being other than living Beings. Astrologers can prove
that the individual's mind works in accordance with those
Beings, The line of proof is very simple; Ask Horary
Astrology a question which may he seriously considered
and for which an answer is earnestly desired, and an
answer will be obtained showing a higher degree of fore-
knowledge than the ordinary reasoning mind can attain.
There are, however, important limitations to this mat-
ter. If astrology could tell you how to get rich on the
stock market for example, it would allow you to be freed
from your karraic load before you had earned the right
to such freedom. Karma is that particular thing which
we inherit from our parents which is the result of former
action. Each individual comes into life for the purpose
of unfolding his soul powers and eventually uniting with
the Divine Mind. The Designers of our lives, whom orth-
odox people call God, have laid the plan and design for
human activity. It is not possible to escape the effects
14 HORARY ASTROLOGY
of this design easily and lightly. Astrology cannot be
used to escape karmic responsibility.
In the average life of an everyday person the degree
of freedom of will by which he can change his karmaj or
fate, or life as designed at birth, is about three per cent,
or very nearly exactly the ratio of the active cells of his
brain that he uses during his lifetime. Physiologists
estimate that ninety-seven per cent of the modern man's
brain cells are never disciplined •r used. Shakespeare
says, "There is a destiny that shapes our ends, roitgh hew
them as we may." Astrology agrees with that conclusion.
The ordinary person can vary but little from that life
which his environment, his character and his personality
thrust upon him.
It is true however that once in a very long time we
see people who have accumulated that freedom of action,
which is analogous to compound interest, whereby the
primary three per cent of freedom has been doubled a
number of times till it approaches complete freedom of
action. When an individual arrives at that point where
he can say, 'T rule my stars," he will, to outward appear-
ance perhaps, appear free in the sense that he is not
limited by condition and environment, but that cannot be
attained except by the exercise of will and of wisdom
that must overcome the primary limitations involved in
heredity and environment, and also by willing co-opera-
tion with Heaven's intents and purposes.
There are three things necessary to be considered in
astrology:
First, the planets which are the spiritual forces which
give the primary stimulus and organize the limits of
consciousness within the physical body. This is done by
means of a spiritual force or light which shines through
the physical body and is visible to the sensitive eye in
INTRODUCTION IS
the twilight and by occultists is called the "aura." We
all possess that light and that light comes from the
planets. We are each a star in the making, held in the
substance of the physical body, but that light grows and
increases in brilliance as the intelligence increases in
activity. The planets are the life-giving energy of our
solar system which divide and specialize the power
given out by the solar center. The spirit of man is then
the energy, the will and the power of illumination which
manifests as intelligence.
Second, the zodiac which corresponds to the soul of
the individual, is the intermediary between the physical
and the spiritual worlds, the "wedding garment" spoken
of in the Bible in that story told by the Master where
the invited guest was turned away from the festivities
because he lacked the wedding garment. The soul, being
the intermediary between the physical and spiritual
worlds, must carry down into the physical body the
forces which the planets have given to the spirit. In the
physical world, the soul manifests itself as desire. So if
the individual have no desires, the soul is either not con-
tacting his physical body or is asleep or is inactive. Your
desires or loves arc the activities of your soul, working
and vibrating in your physical body.
Third, the mundane houses which correspond to the
physical body and encompass all the activities in the
material world.
The houses are defined by the locality in which a per-
son is born or resides. The primary circle from which
the hmises are taken is the circle of the horizon. On
account of the shadow of the world cast upon us, we can
see but one-half of the heavens at any time. The earth
blots out for us half of the heavens, and the horizon
divides' the heavens into two parts, the above and the
below. Besides the horizon circle, another circle called
16 HORARY ASTROLOGY
the Meridian, cutting the horizon in half, divides the
heaven into four parts or quadrants. The upper meridian
is called the Midheaven, or the cusp of the 10th house, or
is abbreviated "M.C." (Medium Coeli). The zenith is
always located upon the meridian, and nadir is the op-
posite point of the zenith, meaning the point below the
earth situated on the meridian. There are four primary
positions, called technically the Ascendant, or Eastern
Horizon ; the Midheaven or point of culmination of any
celestial body; the Descendant or cusp the seventh
house or Western Horizon; and the Nadir or cusp of the
4th house or Lower Meridian. Each one of these four
points becomes the head of an equilateral triangle which
defines two other houses, there being twelve houses in
all, which by nature are similar to the twelve signs of the
zodiac.
The ancient philosophers considered there were two
systems of forces in the world by which Nature was kept
in a state of balance so that life might manifest itself in
living form. They considered that the forces of con-
struction and the forces of destruction were equal and
always working together, therefore, they considered
what were the geometrical angles by which light stimu-
lates or assists organic structure, and what were the geo-
metrical angles by which light strains or helps to destroy
organic structure.
Now it so happens that the organic structure of every
being is built of cells which are in their simplest forms
spheres or spheroids. It follows that the hexagonal sys-
tem of structure, similar to that of the honeycomb, is
common to all organic structure. In the honeycomb the
hexagon is the primary geometrical figure, and a system
whereby light might impinge on a hexagonal structure
from two sources either 60° •r 120° apart would neces-
sarily reach all parts of the structure in equal lines of
INTRODUCTION 17
influence, therefore it follows that when light comes from
two sources either 60° or 120° apart it has a most har-
monious and constructive effect in stimulating organic
growth or sustenance.
The system of the hexagon is considered in astrology
to be universally beneficent or of the nature of assistance
from the heavenly bodies. The essential angles of the
hexagon are the interior angles of 120° and the exterior
angles of 60°.
The other system is that built upon the square, or the
angle of 90°, which is readily recognized in a number of
natural laws, such as that, for instance, of magnetism
and electricity, which always exist at right angles to each
other. This system of geometrical relationships is con-
sidered to be destructive of organic form. Therefore we
have two antagonistic forces always working together
in Nature based upon the geometry of the square and the
hexagon, or more simply, the square and the triangle.
Philosophically summarized, astrology postulates that
the square aspect or relationship of light sources is de-
structive to form but releases energy which has been
lacked up potentially in those forms which Nature has
built. On the other hand, the sexangular aspect of light
sources is the building up power of Nature by which
organic forms are nourished, and spiritual and lower
forms of energy are locked up in potential or latent con-
dition. Therefore astrology takes the Zodiac, the repre-
sentative of the soul of Nature, and divides it into four
parts, each part of which is the head of an equilateral
triangle, by which wc obtain twelve signs of the Zodiac.
The next step in astrology is to find a relationship
between the physical body and these two celestial sys-
tems of spherical division exemplified by the Houses and
the Zodiac.
18 HORARY ASTROLOGY
Physical bodies arc born into the world and come into
the light from darkness, and it is considered by astrology
that the portion of the heavens which is doing that iden-
tical thing of coming from darkness into light, represents
the physical body; therefore the Eastern Horizon which
heads or precedes one-twelfth of the whole circle, is con-
sidered analogous to whatever is born into the world at
any time, and this applies to all branches of astrology.
Therefore, if we consider a thought to be born into the
world, if we can take the time of its appearance we will
have its horoscope and can foretell the course of its ac-
tivity and the results to the one who has brought it forth.
The next p«int to be considered is that whenever a
celestial body comes above the horizon, it proceeds to
keep on rising and its efifect may be considered to in-
crease as it rises till it arrives at the meridian, when it
begins to fall toward the western horizon. By analogy
we can consider that whatever has arrived at its greatest
degree of power, is analogous to whatever portion of the
celestial sphere may be culminating at that time. It is
therefore manifest that by the simplest form of reason-
ing, Horary Astrology ascribes to the Ascendant, or 1st
house, the symbolism or signification of whoever or
whatever may be coming into activity at the moment,
and hence from this one point may be analyzed or appor-
tioned to the whole heavens, whatever is occurring any
place anywhere in the world. Later pages of this work
will show after what manner this analysis is made, and
the reader will find it is always from a simple system of
reasoning that the astrologer ascribes the effects of the
Planets, the signs of the Zodiac and the Houses.
In the beginning then, of Horary Astrology, the As-
cendant represents the person acting, or the person ask-
ing a question, and the state of his mind and his quality
can be analyzed by referring to its celestial representa-
INTRODUCTION 19
tives. Moreover, there are indications by which the as-
trologer may detect the difference between a question
that is asked with all sincerity and with great depth of
purpose, from those arising- from an idle mind which,
by their very nature, are insoluble by astrology.
20 HORARY ASTROLOGY
HORARY ASTROLOGY
ORARY Astrology- is the art of perceiving the
relation between thought as it is generated in
the mind, and the appearance caused by motion
of the heavens and the heavenly bodies. When
correctly conceived and apprehended, almost
any question that may be proposed by the mind
may be analyzed and the outcome or answer foreseen.
This, therefore, is by all means the most practical and
useful branch of astrology. Moreover, it is the one most
easily practiced because the opportunities arise so fre-
quently that the student need never want for material t«
employ his industry.
There is, however, to be noticed that in dealing with
the mind one may find it is tricky, or is deceptive or sub-
ject to illusion, hence it is necessary t» understand in
the beginning what method to use that will discipline
the mind so that it may faithfully reflect Heaven's intent
and purposes.
It may easily be seen by anyone attentive to the action
of one's own mind, that thoughts may be divided into
three classes:
First, those thoughts that are the result of the faculty
of memory, and which flow freely through the mind in
endless procession like clouds chasing across the sky.
Second, thoughts that reflect the ideas or opinions of
our associates, or one's reading or conversation.
Third, those thoughts which are generated by the
changes in one's environment which suggest or require
that one find a way to express the self or secure the sat-
isfaction of one's desires. This class of thought is the
only kind that can have any perceivable relation with
Horary Astrology.
H«RART ASTROLOGY 21
Considered in the light that thought is generated by
the mind, it can be seen why Horary Astrology can be a
true science and not merely a chimera of self deluded
minds. For a thought is as surely conceived, gestated
and brought forth into manifestation as a child, even
though it is not as easy in the first case to trace the
beginning and progress of the event. A thought once
verbalized or expressed in action, is as truly born as is a
child and as truly has an individual horoscope.
Metaphysically then, man is made in the image of Cod,
and thought is made in the image of man; or man is a
product of the Universe and thought is again a product
of the Universe, but man is the immediate agent. Who-
ever creates in any plane of existence, must create al-
ways that which mirrors or expresses himself, hence
creates images of himself. For example, a man strolls
out for a walk, his dog can follow his steps by the scent
because even in walking the man leaves an imprint and
impression of himself.
But the actual pr«of of Horary Astrology is not de-
pendent upon Metaphysics or any other form of reason-
ing, but rather upon practice and the experience of satis-
factory results. Astrology, then, becomes the true source
and standard of metaphysical and philosophical thought,
because it gives a true base and indubitable premise from
which t» reason.
22 HORARY ASTROLOGY
MORAL RESPONSIBILITY
(aifaRlT has been argued that there is no moral respon-
]pp|5[ sibility involved in the practice of Horary
Astrology, that it is a matter as indifferent as
Jj to look at a clock to note the time. But a little
SJrflf consideration will convince one that such is not
" the case, because every question that is pro-
posed by the mind has its roots, in some desire of the
heart. Therefore, for instance, if an enquirer comes to
an astrologer and asks, "When will my uncle die?," the
astrologer must take account of the case to see what is
the motive of the enquirer before he can properly an-
swer the question without involving himself in the same
error that may, perhaps, be in the motive of the enquirer.
For instance, if the enquirer's question be inspired by
love and affection for the uncle, it is a perfectly proper
question, and the astrologer need not fear to try to
answer it; but, if the enquirer is expecting a legacy from
the uncle which will only come to him at the uncle's
death, and the uncle's life stands between him and his
desire, he is in danger of, perhaps unconsciously to him-
self, wishing the uncle dead. Then the astrologer who
would answer his question would be stimulating that
desire by assisting the enquirer's mind to dwell upon it,
and he would have the moral responsibility of assisting in
the act. Therefore, let the astrologer beware how he
answers, or seeks to answer indifferently, every question
that may be propounded to him.
The rules for this matter, however, are very simple and
easily understood; that the astrologer always stands for
justice, for truth, for humanity, for right and for the good
of the enquirer in the real sense of that which is perman-
ent and cannot be lost; and if the astrologer holds to this
faithfully he will make few mistakes in his judgment,
and his sympathy will increase in activity and power, and
MOEAL RESPONSIBILITY 28
the Heavens will reward him by making their purposes
dear to him, and his practice of astrology will prosper.
24 HORARY ASTROLOGY
IMPROPER QUESTIONS
HERE are a number of questions which, from
their very nature, are improper for an astrologer
to attempt to answer. Among improper ques-
tions are to he classed all those relating to
gambling, such as lotteries, prize fights, horse
m
races, etc., where the enquirer desires to
the outcome in order that he may successfully place bets
or wages or buy chances or tickets.
The reason for classing these as improper is not that
such things are necessarily immoral in themselves, but
they are of such a nature as to stimulate the desire to
gain to such an extent as to place the reason and judg-
ment in jeopardyj therefore, astrology should not be
used to stimulate such a vice. There is usually very
little interest in such matters unless it be a matter of
betting or wages. If the question be free of such a pos-
sibility in the motive of the enquirer, and it be merely a
matter relating to the enquirer's judgment, then the rules
given for other matters may be applied in this case.
Another improper question is on enquiring into the
character or virtue of a person by means of Horary
Astrology, where, if an adverse judgment be given the
person's character might be injured. This again is a del-
icate question, and the enquirer should be referred rather
to the acquaintances of the subject enquired of, or the
general reputation. For instance, if it be enquired if a
damsel be virtuous or not; if it be proper for the enquirer
to know about such a matter and important that he do
so, let the enquirer be directed to the proper channels
rather than seek to answer such a question by Horary
Astrology.
If the enquirer ask about divorce, it is, in most cases,
advisable to direct him to find a good lawyer to answer
TMPROPBK QUESTIONS 25
the question; because, although a person might be ad-
vised to advantage on this matter, yet if the astrologer's
judgment should come to the ears of the opposite party,
it might be used against the astrologer. Again, if a per-
son enquire in regard to his health, it is, in most cases,
advisable to advise him to seek a good physician, be-
cause it is best not to take responsibility in a matter in
which the astrologer is not skilled.
In all questions of Horary Astrology the law of the
land is to be respected and those in authority, in so far
as they administer those laws faithfully, are to be given
commendation, consequently it is improper to advise a
person if he seek to evade a law, cither moral or legal.
Another class of improper questions is those where the
enquirer's mind is not determined, or so confused that
he does not know how to frame his question. For in-
stance, if an enquirer ask, "Will I do such and such a
thing at such and such a time?" as for example, "Will I
go to another city six months from now ?" In so far as
he be not in jail or a hospital, it is of course evident that
he can go if he wishes to, therefore the question cannot
be answered by Horary Astrology; but if he ask, "If I
go to such a place at such a time can I obtain employment
so that I may stay there to advantage?" then the question
might be answered, as the matters enquired of are not
those within the province of the person's own will.
Astrology is not for the purpose of taking people's
wills away from them, but rather to clarity their judg-
ment so that in their actions they may not incur unneces-
sary disappointment.
26 HORARY ASTROLOGY
LIMITATIONS OF HORARY ASTROLOGY
f1 I HE application of Horary Astrology is limited
by certain subtle laws that prevent its successful
use for certain purposes,
One of the most certain of these laws of limit-
i1 ation is that Horary Astrology cannot be used
successfully to evade karmic issues of the life.
Karma is the law of cause and effect as applied to
human affairs from the standpoint of justice and fair
compensation. It is administered intelligently by orders
higher than the human, who use planetary forces as their
means of government.
Every individual that is born into the world has.
through certain laws of existence, to assume the conse-
quences of acts of former lives of himself or others. This
law is fate or karma.
For example, each person by heredity is approximately
a one-halt representative of his father and a one-half
representative of his mother; he is, by mcdiance of his
parents, a one-fourth representative of each of his grand-
parents, a one-eighth representative of each of his great-
grandparents, a one-sixteenth representative of each of
his great-great-grandparents, and so on indefinitely to all
the members of his race that have been his progenitors.
Insomuch as those progenitors have done well tr ill, will
his life be conditioned in the beginning and throughout
his existence, except in so far as he shall transcend those
limits by making right the injustices or, by the applica-
tion of intelligence, he shall dissolve the limitations that
bind himself and others.
The total miseries of the world is the total effect of
ancient wrongs and injustices. No one that is born es-
LIMITATIONS OF HORARY ASTROLOGY 27
capes those effects except to a degree that he be one that
helps to alleviate the miseries by righting the wrongs
that have produced them.
Astrology is a divine science under spiritual laws and
must be used in harmony with those laws, and an attempt
to do otherwise will only bring confusion and disappoint-
ment upon whomsoever shall make the trial.
Karma is shown in the case of each individual the
horoscope of the nativity, and Horary Astrology cannot
instruct a person how to evade the karmic issues that are
forecast from the natal figure.
Thus, if the nativity by progression, shows a time
when the finances will suffer strain or loss, it will not be
possible by Horary Astrology to escape the condition, or
in other words, to find a means of quickly producing
prosperity during such a period; and so if a person fall
ill from planetary conditions forecast from his natal
figure. Horary Astrology cannot show that person how
to escape the illness at that time; and so in like manner
with all other things.
In such cases, it will be noted that horary figures
erected for the purpose of evading a karmic issue will
always be indecisive, confused or difficult to read. The
successful application of Horary Astrology, therefore,
depends for the width of its sphere of usefulness upon
that inward harmony which the person who uses it suc-
cessfully must make. This harmony must be between
the individual and the Universal Spirit which religion
calls "God."
To this extent, and for this purpose, astrology is re-
ligious, or rather, it combines science and religion on
this issue. The successful life must of necessity be one
governed by the three principles of science, philosophy
and religion acting in harmony together. Religion, if it
28 HORAET ASTROLOGY
acts alone, is deficient in intelligence and practicality.
Philosophy, if it acts alone, is deficient in sympathy and
human feeling. Science, if it acts alone, is deficient in
intuition and spiritual discernment. Astrology, then,
combines all three in harmony. It is one of the nine
paths of wisdom by which man can ascend to God, hence
astrology can never be used successfully for any selfish
or immoral purpose. It will inevitably bring to disaster
anyone who attempts such a thing.
TIMING THE QUESTION 29
TIMING THE QUESTION
r
an enquirer come to an astrologer and propound
a question or a number of questions, that time
is to be taken to cast a figure of the heavens at
I
which the astrologer first understands the nature
and scope of the question or questions.
If the astrologer seek to answer a question of his own
mind, that time is to be taken when the question involved
is strongly uppermost in the mind, free from stray or
random thoughts, and a sincere desire to know the out-
come prompts the astrologer to ask the question of him-
self. Let the astrologer then note the time at which this
occurs and for that time erect a figure or horoscope of
the heavens, and the rules of the art will enable him to
read the outcome.
Many times things happen suddenly, such as, for in-
stance, the receipt of a letter or the arrival of news or
information, or one finds some event has taken place
which immediately starts the mind to enquire the out-
come, or what is to be expected. All the above give clews
or times for casting horary figures.
If someone propose to the astrologer that he do some-
thing as, for instance, entering into some project, taking
up some line or detail of business, or consider making
journeys, or buying or selling of property, the time that
the proposal is first made to the astrologer, and he thor-
oughly understands the nature and scope of the project
or action, is the proper time for a horary figure.
30 HORARY ASTROLOGY
METHOD OF ERECTING A FIGURE
FOR A HORARY QUESTION
I" HENEVER the time is chosen for a horary ques-
tion, the astrologer proceeds to draft a map of
the heavens precisely as for a birth time or gen-
ethliacal figure.
1—Convert standard time to local mean time. This is
done by adding four minutes for every degree of longi-
tude and four seconds for every minute of longitude the
place of question is east of the standard meridian, and
subtracting four minutes for every degree and four
seconds for every minute of longitude the place of ques-
tion is west of the standard meridian. The standard mer-
idians are lines 15° of Terrestrial Eongitude apart start-
ing from Greenwich Observatory, London, England. In
the United States Eastern Standard time is correct for
the 75th degree West; Central or Valley time for 90°
West; Mountain time for 105° West and Pacific time for
120° West.
2—If Local time be after noon add it to the sidereal
time of noon of the day of question taken from the Eph-
emeris of the current year. The result is the sidereal
time of the Question.
3—If local time of question be before noon subtract
from twelve hours and take this result and subtract from
sidereal time of noon of day of question taken from
Ephemeris. If necessary add 24 hours first to the sider-
eal time taken from Ephemeris. The result is the sidereal
time of question,
4—With the sidereal time of Question enter the Table
of Houses for terrestrial latitude of place of Question and
place signs and degrees on cusps of the Question chart as
METHOB OF ERECriNG A FIGURE 31
found in the tables. The sign and degrees found in the
column headed 10, on the line with the sidereal time of
Question are placed on cusp of the 10th house; the sign
and degrees found in the column headed 11, on the 11th
cusp and so on for all the rest. It will be noted that the
Tables of Houses give only six houses, the opposite
houses have same degrees but opposite signs. Thus:—
Opposite Houses Opposite Signs
1st house opp. 7th house Gemini opp. Sagittarius
2nd house " 8th house Aries opp. Libra
3rd house " 9th house Taurus opp. Scorpio
4th house " 10th house Cancer opp. Capricorn
5th house " 11th house Leo opp. Aquarius
6th house " 12th house Virgo opp. Pisces
To Place Planets in the Horary Chart
Use the Standard Time of Question and add thereto
the difference of time of the Standard Meridian if west
of Greenwich and subtract if east of Greenwich.
For example; If Standard Time is Pacific Time add
eight hours to the Standard Time of Question. If Moun-
tain Time add seven hours; if General Time add six hours
and if Eastern Time add five hours. The result obtained
is the Greenwich Time of the horary figure.
The ephemeral positions are given for noon at Green-
wich, therefore, if the time of Question be before noon
Greenwich a planet's position found in the Ephemeris
must be corrected by subtracting the amount that the
planet would move in the interval before noon. If the
Question be after noon Greenwich an amount that the
planet moves in the interval must be added to its ephem-
eral position.
A convenient though approximate rule for the Moon
is to allow l/z degree per hour. For example if the Ques-
32 HORARY ASTROLOGY
tion be six hours before noon Greenwich Meridian then
the Moon's place will need to have 3° subtracted from it
as given in the Ephemeris.
In general it will not be necessary to correct the
ephemeral positions of the major planets, Neptune,
Uranus, Saturn and Jupiter. Mars, Mercury and Venus
may need correction similar to that for the Sun,
If it be desired to work very exactly these corrections
may all be calculated by means of the proportional log-
arithms found in the back of the Ephemeris,
Having found the correct zodiacal position of the
planets for the time of Question, place them in the chart
in which the correct zodiacal points of the houses have
been previously placed.
WHETHER A FIGURE BE RADICAL ? 33
WHETHER A FIGURE BE RADICAL ?
S soon as a figure for a horary question is erected,
it should be examined to see if it is fit for judg-
ment. It can often be determined at once that
a horary figure is not fit to be judged. When
such is the case it is said that the figure is not
radical.
When a horary figure is found to have any one of the
last three degrees of a sign, or any one of the first three
degrees of a sign ascending on the cusp of the first house
or Eastern Horizon, it is a strong indication that the
question is either too late or too early; that the matter is
already past being of interest or consequence, or, on the
other hand, that the mind of the enquirer has not had
sufficient time for consideration, or that certain important
facts which would influence his mind have not yet ap-
peared. In cither case it is best to defer consideration of
the question and wait for a more favorable time.
The exceptions to the above rules are; First, if the
enquirer's birth chart or progressed chart should have a
similar condition (as to have the last degrees of a sign
or the first degrees of a sign on the ascendant) and, more
particularly if the ascendant of the horary question be in
the same sign as the ascendant of the nativity. In which
case the question may well be considered radical.
It is not well to deliver judgment to an enquirer if in
the horary figure the Moon be found in the last three
degrees of a sign, and also when the Moon is found in the
Via Comhusta, which is the last fifteen degrees of Libra
and the first fifteen degrees of Scorpio, because of the
unfortunate nature of the influence of a number of fixed
stars in this part of the Zodiac.
The figure will seldom give a satisfactory reading if
the Moon be void of course, which means that she does
34 HORARY ASTROLOGY
not form regular aspects with the other planets in the
figure during the time that she moves through the sign
where she is p#sited. The exception to this rule occurs
when the Moon is found in Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius
or Pisces, and the principal significators are strong.
The strongest indication of all is given by the figure
showing contradictory indications so that it is difficult
to read or form conclusions. In such cases the figure
can he (.if no help, and so must be sot aside, and the
astrologer defer judgment.
If an enquirer come to an astrologer for advice, and
the horary figure have the malefics in the 7th house, es-
pecially if in adverse aspect to other planets, or if the
ruler of the 7th house be retrograde or moving toward
unfavorable aspects, it is an indication that the astrol-
oger's judgment will not be received or valued by the
enquirer, and little good conic of the interview. In case
the astrologer be enquiring for himself this rule may be
disregarded.
As a last resort to determine whether a question be
radical, recourse may be had to the natal figure of the
querent. If in the horary some prominent point such as
Moon, ascendant, or significators be found on native's
ascendant, Sun, Moon or the natal planet or cusp par-
taking of the nature of the question, then the question
may he deemed radical.
THE HOUSES 35
THE HOUSES
H E twelve houses are the twelve divisions of the
heavens as viewed from the place and time of
Question.
The 1st house begins at the eastern horizon
and continues downward towards the nadir tor
one-third the distance. That is, it takes a planet one-third
of time from its lower culmination to its rising to pass
through the 1st house. For example a planet rising at
six A. M, that has culminated on the lower meridian at
midnight, enters the 1st. house at four A, M. and arrives
at the horizon at six A. M.
The diurnal motion of the heavens is contrary to the
order of the houses. A heavenly body by the diurnal
motion of the heavens moves through the 2nd house to
the 1st house, thence to the 12th, the 11th, and the 10th
and so on. The Sun moves through the 12th house after
rising in one third of the time from rising to the time of
upper culmination or noon. Tt takes a like time to pass
through the 11th house and the l#th.
All questions in Horary Astrology arc answered by
finding the houses that bear upon the questions and not-
ing the planets that are located therein or are connected
with the houses by some zodiacal relationship.
Meanings of the Twelve Houses
In Horary Astrology the houses have the same mean-
ing as in nativities.
The First House: It signifies whoever may be think-
ing, acting or speaking at the moment, and will describe
the personal appearance of the enquirer, his quality of
mind and disposition. From it is read the indications of
health, vigor, success, length of life and abilities of the
36 HORARY ASTROLOGY
enquirer. If the astrologer be casting a figure for himself
the 1st house represents the dominant influences in his
mind at the moment.
The Second House represents the personal property,
clothes, furniture, equipage and money of the enquirer.
From it is judged the profit or loss to the enquirer of any
business or question.
The Third House represents brethren, neighbors, short
journeys, skill, letters, writings, periodicals, rumors and
news.
The Fourth House represents the father, the home,
lands, houses, mines, the end of things, the quality and
nature of ground or real estate if the question concerns
such matters.
The Fifth House represents children, love affairs,
sports, games, theatres, places of amusement, inventions
or projects of the enquirer.
The Sixth House concerns servants or employees, sick-
ness, its quality and cause, whether it shall continue long
or short. It signifies the paternal uncle, also small ani-
mals when such are kept for the sustenance of the
enquirer.
The Seventh House concerns marriage and describes
the person of the marital mate. It always indicates the
opposing party or defendant in lawsuits, quarrels, duels,
combats or contests of any sort. It also indicates anyone
who is a stranger or unrelated by blood or family to the
enquirer. In questions of theft it concerns the thief. In
astrology it is the astrologer himself when reading for
an enquirer.
The Eighth House concerns death, its quality and
nature. When the enquirer's significator is found in this
THE HOUSES 37
house, it indicates that he fears death. In questions of
disease this house may represent venereal disease, hem-
orrhoids, stone, bladder and rectal disorders. It also con-
cerns legacies and the wealth or property of the partner
or marital mate.
The Ninth House concerns distant journeys, dreams,
visions, foreign countries, religion, philosophy, clergy,
church matters and legal questions, corporations as legal
entities, life insurance as a moral act.
The Tenth House represents the mother, the profes-
sion, the reputation or dignity, the power to achieve suc-
cess in worldly matters.
The Eleventh House represents friends, hopes and
wishes, chiidren-in-Iaw. It is a fortunate house.
The Twelfth House signifies secret enemies, places of
detention, imprisonment, s»rr*w, self undoing.
The houses are classified as angular, succedent and
cadent. The angular houses are the 1st, 10th, 7th and
4th, The succedcnt houses are 2nd, 11th, 8th and 5th.
The cadent houses are the 3rd, 12th, 9th and 6th.
Planets in angular houses are strong and indicate
quick action. Planets in succedent houses are slower
and the results indicated are not so critical. Planets in
cadent houses arc weak and seldom indicate a successful
termination of any affair.
38 HORARY ASTROT.OGT
THE ZODIAC
HE Zodiac is a belt encircling the celestial sphere
in which the Sun, Moon and planets appear to
move among the fixed stars. This belt is ap-
proximately 16° wide. It is divided into twelve
sections of 30° each, called signs. The starting
point for the division of the zodiac is the inter-
section of the Sun's path with the celestial equator called
the vernal equinox because when the Sun crosses that
place the day and night are of equal length in the spring
season of the year. The point is also called the begin-
ning of the sign Aries. The other signs follow Aries
along the zodiac in the direction of the Sun's motion. The
twelve signs may be considered to originate in this
manner:
The first division of the zodiac Is by a line running
across the belt from the vernal equinox to the autumnal
equinox that divides the zodiac into a northern and a
southern half. Another line at right angles to the first
will divide the zodiac into four quarters and mark the
tropic or turning points of the Sun where it turns toward
the south in the beginning of the summer season and the
opposite point where it turns toward the north in the
winter season. The four points just mentioned mark the
beginning of the four cardinal signs Aries, Cancer, Libra
and Capricorn. Each season of the year marked by the
beginning of a cardinal sign is divided into three parts
giving the twelve parts or signs. The signs following the
cardinal signs are called fixed signs and when occupied
by the Sun indicate that the season is so far advanced as
to be almost invariable and unmistakable in its nature.
The four fixed signs are called Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and
Aquarius. The signs following the fixed signs are called
mutable or common because when the Sun is passing
through them one season is ending and the new seas*n
THK ZODIAC
is approaching. The common signs are Gemini, Virgo,
Sagittarius and Pisces. An the four cardinal signs arc
situated on the belt of the Zodiac 90° apart they can be
called the cardinal cross of the zodiac, and so likewise
the fixed signs can be called the fixed cross of the Zodiac
and the common signs be spoken of as the Common cross
of the Zodiac.
Philosophically it can be considered that all creation
must be in one of four elementary conditions, first as
fiery or electronic, second as air or gaseous, third as
liquid or watery, fourth as solid or earthly. The signs
of the Zodiac are therefore divided into four groups
named after the four elementary conditions, The fire
signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. The air signs are
Libra, Aquarius and Gemini. The water signs are Can-
cer, Scorpio and Pisces, The earth signs are Capricorn,
Taurus and Virgo.
Each sign of the Zodiac is named after some animal or
human form which symbolizes some quality that the
name indicates. Thus Aries means ram and denotes a
sign of leadership. Taurus means bull and denotes
strength, and so with the rest of the names.
The signs of the Zodiac are considered to have affinity
with certain planets by which the latter are strengthened,
modified, or weakened in their action. Rulers hip or ex-
altation of a planet in a sign gives it extra power or
virtue in its influence on human affairs. Detriment and
fall of a planet in a sigu weaken it or take from its virtue.
The particular meaning of a sign of the Zodiac in
Horary Astrology is that it may represent a condition,
a direction, a place; the character, disposition, tempera-
ment, or physical description of a person. More often a
sign modifies the influence of a planet and hence of the
person or thing the planet represents.
40 HORARY ASTROLOOY
If a planet representing a person be found in a sign in
which the planet has rulership it indicates that the person
is powerful and qualified to fulfill the office or function
he may possess. If the planet representing a person be in
a sign of contrary nature the person is weak or ill quali-
fied to carry out his desires or purposes. These details
will be more fully explained in latter pages.
The following is the personal appearance of a person
who may be described by any certain sign of the
Zodiac in which no planet is situated.
Aries: The person has a dry, lean body, middle
stature, streng limbs, large bones, long meagre face,
sharp sight, neck rather long and scraggy, dark eyebrows,
swarthy complexion. Disposition is aggressive and com-
bative. He is fond of leadership, like the ram.
Taurus: The person has a short, full, well set body,
full face, thick neck, wide nose and mouth, large shoul-
ders, short, thick, broad hand. Heavy eater, slow to
anger, strong willed, determined, and bull headed.
Gemini: The person has a tall upright body, good
carriage, long arms, quick in thought, speech and action,
fond of travel and information.
Cancer: A short, small person, with pale, sickly com-
plexion, round, full face and generally small features. Sad
brown hair, small grey eyes; the upper part of the body
larger than the lower; constitution weakly. If a female,
prolific. Dull and timid as the crab.
Leo: A large, proud person; full, tall stature, well
proportioned; shoulders broad and well-set. Hair abun-
dant and •ften bushy, sometimes curly. Quick sighted
and a fine sense of location, The countenance quickly
changes to a fierce expression if opposed or threatened.

Virgo: Middle stature, inclined to he tall; slender
figure, neat and well formed; deep set eyes, dark brown
hair; dark complexion; well favored but not handsome.

tension or quick excitability. Modest and not forward,
like a virgin.
Libra: Tall and elegantly formed, rather slender; hair
smooth, and a light auburn or flaxen; face round and
lovely, having great beauty; fine, clear, red and white
complexion, which in old age becomes pimpled or ruddy.
The people among all others most easily disturbed in
their balance, being very sensitive to mental stimulus.
Scorpio: Thick, well-set, middle sized person; strong
and robust; face somewhat broad and square; hair bushy
and plentiful. Mind thoughtful, reserved, active, suspi-
cious, jealous and sometimes deceitful. Very curious
about other people's secrets and the secrets of nature, and
very careful in concealing their own.
Sagittarius: Well formed person, rather tall; strong,
active body; rather long face and handsome, with gener-
ally a straight Grecian nose; fine, clear eyes and ruddy
compkx'ion; chesinut-colored hair, growing off the tem-
ples; inclined to baldness; daring and intrepid; fond of
horses and all small animals and all manner of active
sports. Very conscientious but given to an outspoken
tongue that may pierce the armor of other people's com-
placency or self-esteem.
Capricorn: Generally short, sometimes tall, but always
slender. Long, thin face; chin long and pointed; men
have thin beards; neck long and small; hair black and
lanky; narrow chest. Quick in thought and action. Mind
subtle and witty but capricious.
Aquarius; Person stout, well-set and comely; rather
tall but not of extreme height; body well developed and
42 HOKARY ASTROLOGY
harmonious in build, no parts going to extremes. The
disposition is gentle, courteous and reasonable. Aquarius
means the man who bears, or carries, water and gives It
forth; by which is meant one who seeks truth and gives
it forth; truth in the sense of that which will sustain and
nourish life.
Pisces; Person short; large, pale and fleshy face; the
face is always full, but sometimes sanguine in complexion.
Awkward gait. The person is generally fond of peace,
ani is quite fanciful or dreamy, often easily moved to
tears; sometimes too fond of drink. Easily subject to
colds or other ailments arising from a negative condition.
Sometimes has trouble with the feet.
The description of persons indicated by sign and plan-
ets is the same in Horary as in Genethliacal Astrology.

© Part of Fortune
These three symbols in ancient times were very im-
portant, and at the present time are important among low
caste people or people whose intellectual activities are
not the dominant factor in their lives, but among Occi-
dentals of the present day they are not of very much use,
and are only useful in the solving of a few questions.
The Dragon's Tail is used in questions of deception
and carelessness.
The Dragon's Head is used in questions of luck of the
sort that belongs to successful gambling, or in other
words without an immediate moral reason.
In the same way, the Part of Fortune refers to the
instinct for drawing money by means of the desire nature.
This explains also why at the present time, among us,
they are not important symbols.

How to Calculate the Position of the Part of Fortune
To calculate the position of the Part of Fortune, add
the longitude of the Moon to the longitude of the Ascend-
ant and subtract the longitude of the Sun, the result will
be the longitude of the Part of Fortune. For example, a
certain horary question has—
Longitude of Moon 16° Virgo 25'

"Sun 22° Cancer 01'
the calculation is as follows:

The Sun equals 3 22 01
The Part of Fortune equals 7 24 24

THE PLANETS 45
THE PLANETS
HE nine planets used in Horary Astrology are
Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun,
Venus, Mercury, Moon. The slowest moving is
Neptune, and the swiftest, the Moon, and those
planets between Neptune and the Moon move
in the order in which they have been named.
In the planets are focused the active, positive forces
of our solar system. They are active in the thought world,
in the soul world and in the physical world.
In the physical world they act by means of light, by
gravity and attraction, by electro magnetic influences ;
and in the soul world they act each according to his own
nature. They are considered to be the distribrating agents,
and perhaps act by an unbalancing of the solar forces,
otherwise the Sam would be so tremendously preponder-
ating that no planetary influences outside of him could be
detected.
In Horary Astrology the Moon is by far the most im-
portant planet, as she has the most affinity with man's
ordinary physical mind, the mind which actuates this
physical body and adapts thought for physical purposes.
Next in inilucnce to the Moon is Mercury. Mercury
of himself always puts forward any business with rapid-
ity whenever he is free from the Sun's beams, that is,
more than 17° away from the Sun, and is direct in motion
and not configurated with any malefic planet.
The Sun, in Horary Astrology, is to most intents and
purposes a malefic planet, that is, one whose indications
arc generally adverse toward the desires of the enquirer;
this because he absorbs to himself whatever of planetary
influences may come near him, which is analogous to
46 HORARY ASTROLOGY
turning personal and individual efforts into universal
purposes.
Mars and Saturn are called malefics. Mars, because he
stimulates passion and desire, and produces a separative
effect of the personal mind from the Universal Mind of
which it is a part. Saturn is separative also, and crys-
tallizing in his effects. These planets are always to be
suspected whenever they cast a ray into any house, •r
upon any planet that is signiiicator of any question of
enquiry. They represent that element of the personal
will which defeats itself by separating from the Great
Will of which it is a part.
The planets Venus and Jupiter are benclic, and can
always be relied upon to further the desirable outcome of
any subject of enquiry whenever they cast a ray into a
house or upon a signiiicator representing the matter of
enquiry.
Uranus and Neptune arc representatives of transcend-
ental powers not easily organized or evaluated, but if the
question be of the nature of either of these planets it may
be hastened or brought to success by the friendly rays of
these planets. They assist spiritual matters rather than
material ones.
A planet's nature is always modified by the sign in
which it is located, by its configuration with other plan-
ets, by its apparent motion whether swift, slow, station-
ary or retrograde, and by its bouse position whether an-
gular, succedent, or cadent.
The following is the description of the personal appear-
ance of a person represented by a single planet.
It is always modified by the sign in which it is located
and by its configuration to other planets.
THE PLANETS 47
The appearance of a person whose significator is the
Moon is similar to that described under the head of the
sign Cancer in preceding pages.
Mercury gives a slender face and body, long nose, thin
lips, slender fingers and hands, penetrating eyes. He
will be quick in thought and action, and curious and busy
in all affairs.
Venus gives a graceful, plump body, inclined to stout-
ness in middle age. Face oval, sometimes round; hair
dark; eyes large; voice soft and manner gracious.
Sun gives a powerful, well formed body, rather bony.
Face and forehead large; hair and complexion usually
light, inclined to baldness at the front of the head; eyes
commanding and complexion clear.
Mars, body strong, waist and hips narrow; hair red or
black, often curly or wiry; eyes quick and sharp; com-
plexion often very ruddy, face livid when angry or
excited.
Jupiter: Large body, well formed, inclined to become
portly in middle age; forehead high; eyes wide spaced
and kindly. Very conscientious.
Saturn: Slender, angular body, large bones, some-
times stoops with advancing years; features stern; eyes
small; hair dark; complexion indifferent.
Uranus: Slender, of pleasing appearance; features
irregular; eyes large, brilliant and keen, usually light;
some types very ascetic in appearance.
Neptune; Body slender and highly organized; fea-
tures well chiseled; expression abstract or mystical; hair
retreats from temples. Eyes show a rapidly dilating iris.
Pluto: Beside the nine planets previously spoken of
there is a tenth, Pluto, lately discovered. It is extremely

d*ubtfui whether it is of much use in Horary Astrology,
except in very unusual cases. The majority of astrologers
appear to believe that its domicile is in the sign Scorpio,
but another party of astrologers believe its domicile to
be the sign Aries. In any case it would appear to be a
higher octave of the planet Mars, and it is the opinion of
certain German astrologers that it represents mass ac-
tion ; and no doubt it has relation to certain social
changes occurring in this century, particularly relating to
the distribution of wealth, and no doubt will be concerned
with certain revolutionary changes that will occur in this
century.
Hcncc, unless a horary question relates to something
having to do with mass action such as war or revolution,
social reforms or reactions, its inlluence will seldom have
any specific value. But in case he be found with any sig-
nificator in a horary question, it more likely will indicate
disappointment for the querent, even more than would
the planets Mars, Uranus or Neptune in that same place.

SlONlFICATORS 49
SIGNIFICATORS
Y significator is meant a planet that indicates,
symbolizes or represents any person, matter or
thing enquired about. For illustration, any per-
son asking a horary question is represented by
the zodiacal sign arising on the eastern horizon,
and the planetary ruler of that sign is his sig-
nificator. Having located the celestial representative or
significator of the enquirer, all his affairs, relations or
interests may be found, each in the appropriate house of
the horary figure. There is nothing that can happen, nor
any interest or activity, but what can be properly placed
in one of the twelve houses.
How Matters are brought to Pass
There arc three ways in which matters enquired about
may be indicated as coming to pass, Thus, for example,
a man enquires if the marriage for which he is preparing
shall take place. The indication of such event may be in
any one of three ways: First, the significator of the per-
son, matter or event Forms an Aspect with a planet that
represents the person, matter or thing by which the mat-
ter enquired about is brought to pass. If the aspect he
a conjunction or parallel, then the matter will be easily
accomplished. If the aspect be a sextile, then the matter
reijuircs more activity and care to accomplish it.
If the aspect be a square, the matter will he difficult to
handle and can only be brought about by diligent and
laborious efforts, and the result will be of less value than
anticipated.
If the aspect be a trine, the matter is accomplished
easily and the results will be satisfactory and content-
ment will ensue.
HORARY ASTROLOGY
If the aspect be an opposition, there is little likelihood
of bringing the matter to pass except by much argument,
effort and diplomacy. And the results ensuing will not
be satisfactory.
The second way in which matters are indicated as
coming to pass is by what is called Translation of Light.
When the significator of the enquirer and the significator
of the matter enquired about arc separating from the
conjunction, sextile or trine of each other, and another
planet moves so as to aspect first one significator and
then the other before the aspect of any other planet inter-
venes, the planet so moving acts by translation of light
and represents some third party who will accomplish the
matter.
The third way by which matters are brought to pass,
if when two significators arc not in aspect to each other,
but each forms later an aspect to another planet more
weighty than the two significators, (the weighty planets
are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, in the order
named) the third planet being found in some of the essen-
tial dignities of the two significators. This is called
Collection of Light, the meaning of which is that some
third party shall intervene and bring matters to an issue.
To Foretell the Time of the Resolution of a Question
Very often the most important part of a question is
the time at which the business will be consummated, and
in this matter extreme care and judgment are required.
There are no certain rules, but every case must be largely
decided upon the conditions as well as upon the horary
figure. Ilovvevci, (.he most impoi LaiiL consideralion is;
Will the matter be finished quickly; will it drag slowly,
or will it take a long time? These three relative condi-
tions are easily read from the horary figure in most cases.
SIGNIFIUATOES 51
If the significators of the enquirer and the question be
forming favorable aspects in angular houses and in car-
dinal signs, we know at once that all the forces involved
are moving rapidly and with great power, so that we
know the question will be soon resolved and the business
brought to issue. Wc can generally say that this means
the number of degrees by which the significators are
deficient in forming the aspect to which they are moving,
by that same number of days will the matter be brought
to completion.
The next degree of celerity is when the significators
arc found in angles and in common signs, in which case
we can usually read degrees as equivalent to weeks of
time. If the signilicators be in angles and in fixed signs,
the degrees indicate months.
The next degree of celerity is when the significators
are found in succedent houses and in cardinal signs, in
which case degrees will probably stand for months and
in fixed signs degrees will stand for years.
If the aspect of the significators be formed from cadent
houses, things will drag slowly and be very uncertain of
fulfillment, so that it is questionable whether in such
cases it may be proper to judge time at all, and at best
it is very uncertain and a long time that is involved in
most cases,
In all cases the abdve rules are to be understood in the
sense that the swifter planet that is forming the aspect be
overtaking the slower planet is to be the critical one
judged f«r time, so that, for example, if there be a trine
from a significator in the 1st house to a significator in the
5th, and the planet in the 1st house be the swifter planet,
the rule for planets in angles is the one used, and vice
versa if the swifter planet be in the 5th house and the
slower planet in the 1st house, the rule for succedent
houses is the one to use.
52 HORARY ASTROLOGY
One •ther way of foretelling the time when the ques-
tion will be resolved, is to look in the Ephemeris for the
day on which the significators in the horary figure that
indicate the resolution of the question come to a perfect
aspect. An illustration of this will be found in the chapter
of examples of horary questions where the time is found
in this way.
Direction
When a question arises concerning direction there are
two methods of resolving the doubt.
First: If the person or thing be far distant examine
the sign in which the significator be placed. The nature
of the sign, whether it be fiery, watery, airy or earthy
has reference to the cardinal points of the compass.
Thus, if the significator be in Aries the person or thing
is due east of the enquirer; Leo indicates north of east,
and Sagittarius south of east. Libra is due west, Gemini
south of west and Aquarius north of west. Cancer is due
north, Scorpio east of north and Pisces west of north,
Capricorn is due south, Taurus east of south and Virgo
west of south.
Second, if the significator of the person or thing en-
quired about be not beyond the confines of the country
•f the enquirer, then use the houses to indicate direction,
and in this case the figure is divided into four quarters.
From the eastern horizon to the midheaven is the south-
east quarter. The cusp of the 1st house is due east, the
cusp of the 10th house due south, the middle of the 11th
house southeast, and the intermediate points indicate
direction exactly to the degree that they vary from the
points named.
In like manner the quarter of the heavens from the cusp
•f the 10th to the cusp of the 7th indicates the southwest
quarter. The 7th to the 4th indicates the northwest quar-
ter and the 4th to the 1st the northeast quarter.
INDICATIONS THAT HINDER OR DESTROY SUCCESS 53
INDICATIONS
THAT HINDER OR DESTROY SUCCESS
I^siYtpIlN Horary Astrology there are several important
considerations that need not be considered in
Genethliacai Astrology, The reason being that
■Stsr Horary Astrology deals mainly with thought
and ephemeral affairs and hence, because of the
extreme mobility of the subject, there are certain
influences which become very important.
In order that the subject matter of a horarj' question
should become successful, the significator of the enquirer
and the matter enquired about should be free of combus-
tion, which means that the planets involved should be at
least seventeen degrees distant from the Sun. Also, the
significators should not be retrograde, which is an ex-
treme disability. For the signiflcators of an enquirer to
be cadent is another extreme disability, A planet is
cadent when in the 12th, 3rd, 6th or 9th house.
Finally, the astrologer should look carefully in an
otherwise favorable figure for refranation. Refranation
is when two planets arc approaching an aspect and be-
fore it becomes complete the swifter planet turns retro-
grade, and hence refrains from completing the aspect,
This indicates that the business will be dropped and come
to nothing, no matter how well it may have progressed
up to the time of refranation.
Interference by outside parties in a matter is indicated
when the significators are moving to an aspect and before
it is completed a third planet forms an aspect to one of
the significators. In such a case the question matter may
suffer.
Special attention should always be paid to the rapidity
of motion of the planets concerned in a horary question,
54 HORARY ASTROLOGY
to ascertain whether an aspect is still in the process of
forming or whether the swifter moving planet has al-
ready passed the exact degree of forming of aspect. If
forming, or not yet perfected, it refers to things yet to
come to pass, if separating from exact aspect, it describes
occurrences or conditions that have already taken place.
Where One of the Enquirer's Co-Significators is Cadent
If a question be dependent upon the action of the en-
quirer and the Moon be angular or succedent, but the
ruler of the ascendant cadent, then although the person
will desire to proceed or follow up the business, he will
be unable to do so, and if the Moon be cadent and the
ruler of the ascendant angular or succedent, then al-
though the person will be able to follow up the matter,
yet his mind will vacillate or procrastinate till the oppor-
tunity passes away. In either case, then, the question
will come to naught.
Ruler of Ascendant and Question Being the Same Planet
If the ruler of the question and the ruler of the ascend-
ant be the same planet, then the matter lies in the deci-
sion of the enquirer, and he will have the power to ac-
complish the thing desired, or to initiate it or to refrain
from initiating it.
If the Moon rules the question, it being the co-signifi-
cator of the enquirer, then the person has some family or
domestic relation to the question, and his influence is
more powerful than in ordinary cases, and in any case he
thoroughly understands the situation and all the means
necessary to success ; in other words, he will have correct
instinct about it.
Age, Quality and Kind of Person
Represented by Planets as Significalors
When a planet is taken as the significafor of a person,
the approximate age is often indicated. Thus, the Moon
INDICATIONS THAT HINDER OR DESTROY SUCCESS 55
may represent an. infant; Mercury a child; Venus a
y«uth; the Sun a person of early maturity; Mars a person
of late maturity; Jupiter a person of middle age, and
Saturn a person in old age.
When the question involves persons of neither extreme
youth nor extreme age, then the same principle applies,
namely, that the Moon, Mercury and Venus represent
the younger people; Sun and Mars the more mature; and
Jupiter and Saturn the more elderly.
Social Dignity
The social dignity and quality of a person may to some
extent be judged by the planet that is his significator.
Thus, Saturn represents laborers and people of little
social power or dignity; Jupiter represents people of
power, influence and wealth. Mars represents active,
energetic and ambitious people; the Sun represents those
holding the highest positions of authority; Venus repre-
sents those living in luxury or busy with amusements;
Mercury represents those active in trade or employment;
the Moon represents those well supported by family
position or influence and usually well known and
respected.
In all cases the power, dignity and social importance
of a person is to be judged by the essential dignity that
is possessed by his planetary significator as well as the
planet itself. A planet in its essential dignity indicates
a person powerful in his own class, and a planet in its
detriment or tall, or in the dignities of a planet of con-
trary nature indicates a person who is badly situated or
unfortunate in his condition and affairs. The same thing
applies if a planetary significator is combust, cadent or
afflicted by adverse aspects of malefic planets.
Employment
People are often classified by their employments, and
in this manner the planets indicate the following;
66 HORARY ASTROLOGY
Neptune represents ascetics, artistic and literary gen-
iuses, musicians, artists, philosophers, occultists, black
magicians and just plain, ordinary "nuts."
Uranus represents astrologers, metaphysicians, anti-
quarians, archaeologists, scientists, inventors, electricians,
psychologists, aviators, engineers.
Saturn represents laborers, agriculturists, masons,
bricklayers, miners, quarrymen, sewer men, garbage men,
nightwatchmen, jailers, junk dealers, scavengers, tramps,
hoboes and all despised or poorly paid occupations,
Jupiter represents senators, judges, clergymen, bankers,
lawyers, insurance men, professors, clothiers, provision
dealers (wholesalers), merchants, physicians, philan-
thropists, trustees, corporation officials or directors.
Mars represents soldiers, police, guards, fureinen, sur-
geons, chemists, iron and steel workers, engineers, butch-
ers, barbers, railroad men, civil and mining engineers
when working in the field, executioners, bailiffs, sheriffs,
gunmen, thieves, detectives, blacksmiths, foundrymen,
dyers and cooks.
Sun represents kings, presidents, governors, executives,
magistrates, leaders and all classes of positions of power
and authority.
Venus represents musicians, singers, entertainers,
dancers, modistes, beauty parlor operators, jewelers, per-
fumers, painters, waiting maids, morticians, florists,
actors and confectioners.
Mercury represents students, clerks, travelers, mes-
sengers, telegraph operators, orators, lecturers, writers,
authors, joumalists, school teachers, stenographers, typ-
ists, pressmen, reporters, secretaries and accountants.
Moon represents mothers, housewives, nurses, laun-
dresses, seamen, fishermen, bartenders, brewers, vintners,

dealers in liquids, general tradesmen, milkmen, messen-
gers, navigators, ferrymen, millers, bakers, cleaners and
dyers.
The Essential Dignities of the Planets
The highest essential dignity of a planet is its location
in the sign of its rulership. (Thus, Mars in the sign Aries
is essentially dignified.) In Horary Astrology it signifies
a person well situated in regard to his prepcrty, social
position and general affairs.
The next highest degree of essential dignity is for a
planet to be in its exaltation sign. In Horary Astrology
it signifies a person very proud, occupying a prominent
position and very stiff and unyielding in regard to his
property, rights, social position or other matters.
A planet in its triplicity, without other essential dig-
nity, represents a person in fair circumstances but not
very powerful.
If a planet be in its own term without other essential
dignity, then the person represented thereby has no
power of his own but moves in the circle of respectability
and good appearance.
A planet in its detriment represents a person far from
his own class, kindred or family, and hence not capable
of showing his true virtues, but obliged to work and act
to a disadvantage.
A planet in its fall represents one who hy folly has lost
his natural powers, privileges or other advantages, and
is obliged to suffer disgrace, contempt, poverty or other
form of limitation.

ASPECTS 59
ASPECTS
HNLY the five major aspects, as given below, are
used in Horary Astrology. An orb of about
eight degrees, either applying or separating, is
allowed for all aspects:
Symbol
6 Conjunction: Planets together in the same sign
and degree, Allow orb of 10°.
8 Opposition—(180°)—Planets in the same degree
in opposite signs. Allow orb of 10°.
A Trine—(120°)—Planets in the same degree 120°
distant from each other. Allow orb of 8°.
□ Square—(90°)—Planets in the same degree 90°
distant from each other. AHoav orb of 8°.
^ Sextile—(60°)—Planets in the same degree 60°
distant from each other. Allow orb of 6°.
There are some slight variations made by some authors
in the orb allowed for different planets, but in Horary
Astrology, they hardly seem important enough to pay
much attention t* them.
For the same reason, the minor aspects sometimes
used in genethliacal and other branches of astrology, are
discarded as being of no particular value.
Parallel of Declination
Planets are Parallel when in the same degree of Dec-
lination, either north or south. In most cases the Par-
allel is treated the same as the conjunction, with the
exception that an orb of not over half a degree of differ-
ence in Declination is allowable for this aspect. The
symbol for Parallel of Declination is P.

HOUSE QUESTIONS
T is possible by means of Horary Astrology to
answer many questions that properly belong to
Gene:hliacal Astrology, Whenever the birth
hour is known, most questions regarding per-
sonal affairs are best answered by reference to
the horoscope of the nativity. When the birth
hour is unknown, a horary figure may answer more
directly and in greater detail whatever questions arc up-
permost in the mind of the enquirer.
For a horary question of this nature to be satisfactory,
the enquirer must be concentrated in his own desires and
purposes and be minded intelligently to seek and follow
astrological advice. The best test of the correctness of
such figure is that it should describe the enquirer, his
personal appearance, the state of his mind, and should
reveal in some detail what has been the nature of most
important events immediately preceding the time of en-
quiry. If the horary figure satisfy these conditions, it
may be relied upon to indicate the course of future
events.
QUESTIONS CONCERNING FIRST HOUSE MATTERS 61
QUESTIONS
CONCERNING FIRST HOUSE MATTERS
Life and Health of the Enquirer
HE native may have fears that his health may
suffer, or being in ill health he may wish to en-
quire if he may recover his health, or being' in
good health may wish to know if he may rely
on continued good health.
The chief signs •£ continued health are to have the
ruler of the sign ascending, or the Moon free from com-
bustion or conjunction, or square or opposition of the
malefics, or of the rulers of the 6th, 8th, 12th or 4th
houses. The stronger the essential dignities of the ruler
of the 1st house and the Moon or any planet not a male-
fic in the 1st house, the better for health. Also for the
significators to be direct in motion and angular, and for
the Moon to be increasing in light is favorable.
The Moon increases in light when passing from the
conjunction of the Sun (which is called the dark of the
Moon) to the opposition of the Sun (which is called the
full Moon). The Moon is decreasing in light when pass-
ing from the opposition of the Sun to the conjunction of
the Sun.
If the significat»rs of the person be leaving their es-
sential dignities or separating from benefic aspects and
at the same time applying to malefic aspects, then there is
danger that the health is failing, or will shortly fail.
On the contrary, if the significators are entering their
essential dignities, or separating from malefic aspects,
especially of the rulers of the 6th, 8th, 12th or 4th houses,
and applying to bcncfic aspects of Venus or Jupiter, then
it is evident that the health of the enquirer is strongly on
62 HORARY ASTROLOGY
the mend, and if he be in poor health at the time of en-
quiry, he will shortly recover his health completely.
The student will here notice the difference between
horary and gcnethliacal astrology. The significators of
health in gcnethliacal astrology are chiefly the Sun, Moon
and Ascendant; whereas in horary astrology the Sun is
not so regarded. This is because Horary Astrology deals
with the mind of an enquirer and genethliacal astrology
with his personality as limited and conditioned by his
physical body and environment.
Questions of Short Life, Accident or Death
In questions where death is involved the astrologer is
to be wary of giving rash judgment, or of needlessly caus-
ing people to worry or fear that which may be inevitable.
If the astroleger perceives that the foreknowledge of the
accident or event will cause no good and may do harm,
he should withhold such knowledge, or at least only in-
dicate it as a possibility that may be averted if the proper
means be used. The astrologer sheuld in such case com-
mend the enquirer to seek spiritual guidance and divine
help by proper resolves, meditation and prayer.
If the ruler of the ascending sign, or the Moon, be
within seventeen (17) degrees of the Sun, and applying
to the conjunction of or be afflicted by the rulers of the
8th or 6th houses, or if the Ascendant or 7th house be
occupied by Saturn or Mars without essential dignity,
then the life of the enquirer is threatened by some mis-
fortune of the quality of the afflicting planets or the
houses they may rule. For example, a certain horary
figure showed the ruler of the Ascendant applying to
combustion in the 8th house. This, of course, indicates
danger of approaching death. In the same figure the
benefic planet, Jupiter, formed a trine aspect of the ruler
of the Ascendant before the conjunction of the Sun was
QUESTIONS CONCERNING FIRST HOUSE MATTERS f.3
completed. The interpretation of this condition was that
though the enquirer came close to death by illness, yet
his life was saved by the skill of a physician.
Will a Vacation very much Improve a Person's Health?
In a question of this sort there are many factors to be
considered. But look first to any planets found in the
first house. Next, examine the condition of the Moon, and
to a minor degree, examine indicators in the 5th and 6th
houses, or planets therein, or their rulers. Usually a
vacation gives (Opportunity for travel, change of scene
and relaxation from responsibility or drudgery. The
Moon or ruler of the Ascendant, or planet in the first
house applying to good aspects of the ruler of the 3rd or
planets in the 3rd, shows advantage to be derived from
travel or change of scene; the Moon or ruler of ascend-
ant or planet therein applying to a good aspect of ruler
of the Sth or planets in 5th show advantage or improve-
ment from relaxation, recreation, sport or new interests.
On the contrary, if the significators of health, i.e.,
Moon or ruler of the Ascendant, are void of course, retro-
grade or combust, then there is little advantage promised ;
and evil aspects from malefic planets show actual disad-
vantage and indicate the cause. A vacation for instance
may involve too much expenditure or too much effort, or
the native may meet disappointments of various sorts.
Does an Enquirer Need a Surgical Operation?
In general it is an easily- accepted fact that there are
many cases where operations are useless or dangerous,
and may injure rather than benefit the health of the
patient, and of course there is the other extreme where
operations are needed but not performed from fear, in-
dolence or prejudice on the part of the patient. In general,
astrology, as already mentioned, is not to be used to
supercede correct diagnosis by competent medical prac-
64 HORARY ASTROLOGY
titioners, but it may be used t* assist in forming correct
judgment, by taking int* account imponderables, things
not visible to Xrays, nor audible to stethoscopes, nor
measurable by physical means. Astrology reveals con-
ditions of the mind, of the soul, or the moral nature, and
hence of the invisible forces that affect health.
In questions of this nature there are likely to be violent
astrological indications in the h*rary figure if the opera-
tion is of a serious nature. In many cases a figure will
be found with Mars, Saturn or Uranus near to a con-
junction, square or opposition of the significators of
health—that is, the Moon, or the ruler of the ascendant.
In such cases we look t* Jupiter or to the ruler cf the 9th
house, or to planets in the 9th for indications of success-
ful application of science, and where such indications
appear it is safe to rely up*n the judgment •f the medical
advis*r.
On the other hand., if the indications point to improv-
ing health, delay in having the operation will nearly al-
ways end by showing the operation to be unnecessary.
Signs of improving health are ruler of ascendant, planets
in the 1st house or M••)!, approaching good aspects; in
which case the 9th house, whatever its indications may
be, may be entirely disregarded. However, if conditions
arc of a rapidly increasing malice, it is a strong affirma-
tion that if surgery has been advised it should be per-
formed.
In questions of operations the houses indicate the parts
of the body in the same way as do the signs of the zodiac.
Thus, the first house indicates the head, second house the
throat, third house lungs and chest, fourth breasts and
stomach, fifth heart, sixth bowels, seventh kidneys, eighth
excretory system and sex organs. It is not well to read
by house beyond this point because the zodiacal signs
Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, assigned to
QUESTIONS CONCKUNING FlItST HOUSE MATTERS 65
the limbs, are more or less symbolical of transcendental
functior.s which cannot be accurately represented in the
physical body. Therefore, the signs themselves being
only symbolical, any use of the analagous houses would
be too far-fetched.
The houses, it is understood then, indicate the parts of
the body in a more temporary or accidental way than do
the signs of the zodiac. The application of the hotise-
factor is to help in diagnosis to lind the seat of the trou-
ble which has produced the need of an operation. Saturn
in any house indicates hardening, lack of circulation,
obstruction or deposit of toxic matter in that part of the
body which is represented by the house Saturn occupies.
Mars indicates inllammatlon or bidden ulcers or foci of
infection in that part of the body indicated by the house
Mars occupies, Uranus indicates nervous tension that
may interfere with circulation of blood. Jupiter in bad
aspect indicates over-repletion. Venus afflicted indicates
too much idleness or ease. Mercury afflicted indicates
the scat of the trouble to be in the nerves; Moon afflicted
indicates the glands; and Sun atflictcd indicates the
vitality.
Further consideration in regard to health will be given
under the head of the 6th house.
What Part of the World
is Most Fortunate for the Enquirer?
If the enquirer be free to remove or travel, and he be
desirous of knowing- in which direction to travel, or what
part of the world will be most fortunate for liim, examine
the figure to see which significators are strongest or most
fortuna:e. Consider carefully the beneflcs, Jupiter and
Venus, and also the Moon and Part of Fortune. The
benches are to be chosen by preference if they arc strong
and well dignified.
66 HOUAIiy ASTROI.OGY
Jf any particular purpose or pursuit is to be followed,
take the significator that governs the matter as the ruler
of the ascendant; take Moon if the object of removing is
for health; ruler of the 2iid and Part of Fortune if for
wealth; Sun and the Lord of the 10:h if for honour and
glory or political preferment; and in like manner take
the appropriate signiheators for other purposes.
If the signiheators be in differcn: places, choose the
strongest. If none of the signiheators be strong and es-
pecially if they be afflicted by the malehcs, the pursuit
should be abandoned, as only disappointment, grief and
trouble will result. If violent fixed stars be close to the
signiheator, the enquirer may lose his life in the pursuit.
A table of Fixed stars should be consulted. Mars in con-
junction or opposed to either of the luminaries also
threatens death. The places where the malehcs are
situated should always be avoided.
The places of direction are taken from the mundane
position of the heavens. The ascendant gives due east;
the midheaven due south; the descendant due west and
the lower meridian due north. Between the Isl house and
the 10th house is the southeast quarter; between the 10th
house and the 7th is the southwest quarter; between the
7th house and the 4th is the northwest quarter, and be-
tween the 4th house and the 1st house is the northeast
quarter.
Besides the compass directions as indicated by the
house position of the signiheators, it is possible to draw
inference from the signs in which the signiheators are
placed. Thus, each country in the world is influenced by
some one or more of the zodiacal signs, so that an eclipse
falling in the sign Virgo is held to indicate that the
events signihed by the eclipse will be principally notice-
able in those countries or cities whose geniture sym-
fUESTI«NS CONCERNING FIRST HOUSE MATTERS fi7
pathizes with the sign Virgo, as for example, Turkey and
Greece.
In the same way, if the significators of the enquirer
were found in Virgo, it might indicate that he would
meet with the best results in a country or city influenced
by Virgo; and in like manner for any of the other signs.
The student is warned that he is to use judgment and
caution in advising an enquirer to travel to a foreign
country, and only to do so when there arc strong indica-
tions. If the country or city to which the enquirer is
directed be shown by the sign in which the enquirer's
significators are found, then the part of the country is
chosen by the house position. Thus, if the country be
indicated by the sign Gemini, indicating possibly the
United States of North America, and the significator be
in the 9th, 8th or 7th houses, it advises the enquirer to
travel to the southwest ^art of the United States.

SECOND HOUSE QUESTIONS
Wealth, Gain or Loss
( ue
HHSii l stions concerning wealth or poverty,
gain or loss, the 2nd house, the planets therein,
t e ru er
SmL® ^ ' "f the 2nd house and the Part of For-
lakJflr 1UT,C ure to examined.
■ To have benefic planets in the 2nd house, well
aspccted, shows that the person will live in comfort and
have all desirable means to live a noble and generous life.
When malefic planets are in the 2nd house it shows diffi-
culties, losses and disagreeable conditions in regard to
money matters.
Signs of wealth and gain are to have the rulers of the
1st and 2nd in reception or good aspect; the ruler of the
1st in the 2nd, or the ruler of the 2nd in the 1st, or strong
in their own houses; Jupiter, Venus or the Moon in the
2nd strong and free of affliction, or in conjunction or
good aspect with the ruler of the 2nd. The Dragon's
Head is favorable for gain in whatever house he be
placed, and the Dragon's Tail brings loss in whatever
house is afflicted by his presence. The ruler of the sign
in which the Part of Fortune is placed is also an indica-
tion of a source or way of wealth to be received.
Small, light planets indicate quick wealth, and slow,
ponderous planets indicate that it will come slowly.
If the figure show none of the above indications, then
it is certain that the native's chances for gain are ex-
tremely small.
If Saturn, Mars, CJranus or the Dragon's Tail be in the
2nd house, or afflict its ruler, or be joined to the Part of
Fortune, then distress and poverty are approaching.
70 HORARY ASTROLOGY
The Sun in the 2nd house is not a good indication for
wealth or gain but rather indicates extravagance or
spending for purposes of ostentation.
Borrowing Money
If the querent ask should he borrow money to expand
his business or to enter upon a business or undertake
some venture, then the question relates to the success of
the business or venture as well as to the act of borrow-
ing. The question in such cases presupposes that the
borrower's credit is good. If, for instance, the venture or
business deals with land, houses, agricultural or mineral
products, then the 4th house is involved. If the venture
is of a speculative nature then the fifth house is to be
considered.
A person's credit t« a large degree is governed by the
Sun and the 10th house.
Look first to the ruler of the 1st, the Moon and the
planets in the 1st house, for this to a large degree gov-
erns the matter by indicating the querent's ability to
bring to success the matter for the furtherance of which
he wishes to borrow. A negative answer is indicated by
his significators being retrograde, combust, cadent, af-
flicted by evil aspects, or void •£ course. If the personal
significators are propitious, look to see if the second
house or its significators indicate profit or advantages.
Thus, planets in the 2nd, ruler of 2nd, or Moon, dignified,
or these same or Part of Fortune forming good aspects,
are all signs of gain or advantage.
Can Querent Negotiate a Loan?
This question may occasionally arise as part of some
other main question. And of course in such affairs the
main question must be answered first. The would-be
borrower may be lacking in available collateral, but may
SECOND HOUSE QUESTIONS 71
hav« excellent credit; or his credit or his affairs may be
so involved as to make it difficult to give satisfactory
security to lending corporations or banks.
Tn such a situation a horary figure may point the best
way of approach when seeking a creditor. In this case,
the first house denotes the enquirer, while the 7th house
denotes and describes the appearance, station in life and
characteristics and disposition of the lender. Good as-
pects formed bctwen the rulers of the 1st and the 7th or
between the Moon and ruler of the 7th, or Moon to a
planet in the 7ch ; or good aspects from the ruler of the
7th or planets therein to the ruler of the 2nd or to 1 'art of
Fortune; or the ruler of the 7th or 8th posited in the 1st
or 2nd house, are all affirmative signs of success in mak-
ing a loan. To have the Sun strong or well aspected is
another testimony of success in borrowing.
Lending Money or Belongings
This comes under two heads, first, where the loan is
secured by collateral, and second, where the loan is
unsecured.
The time that the borrower asks for the loan is the
proper time to use for erecting the chart. But in case
the time of the request was not noted, then the time when
the proposed lender applies to the astrologer may be
used, but in the first case the first house represents the
borrower, while in the second case the proposed lender is
represented by the 1st house and the proposed borrower
by the 7th, if not related to the lender. If however the
would-be borrower is a relative, then the appropriate
house will be: 3rd for brother, sister or cousin, 4th for
parent, 5th for son or daughter, etc.
Whatever house represents the borrower, the 2nd
house from it denotes his profit or loss. If the loan is a
110IIARY ASTROLOGY
small one and no collateral involved the main question
to the lender is: Will it he paid back?
The answer will be read affirmatively for him if the
borrower's significators, cither personal or financial, ap-
ply to good aspect of lender's significators, or if they are
found posited in lender's 1st or 2nd house.
It is to be noted that the same rules that apply to
borrowing or lending money will hold true where the
borrowing may be of some article of personal possession.
THIRD HOUSE QUESTIONS
THIRD HOUSE QUESTIONS
Whether a Short Journey is Advisable
SHORT journey is one thai will not take moTe
than three days to go and return.
Consider the ruler of the ascendant, the ruler
of the 3rd house and the Moon. If the rulers be
found in each others' dignities or houses; or
Moon in 3rd house or in dignity of 3rd house ruler, or if
the ruler of the ascendant be direct and swift in motion
and going to a favorable aspect of any of the planets, it is
evidence that the journey is advisable and will be success-
ful in whatever object is the cause of the journey.
On the contrary, the journey is of doubtful success or
not advisable if the ruler of the 1st be retrograde, slow
or stationary, as this indicates slow progress and hin-
drances on the journey.
Uranus, Saturn, Mars or the Dragon's Tail in the 3rd
or afflicting the ruler of the 3rd or the Moon, indicates
hindrances on the journey or disappointment in its re-
sults, Whatever planet afflicts the ruler of the 3rd will
indicate the nature of the evil that will develop by the
journey.
Concerning the Health or Condition,
of an Absent Brother or Sister
The first house, its ruler, or planet therein and the
Moon represent the enquirer; the 3rd house and its ruler
or planet therein arc for the brother and sister.
If the ruler of the 3rd be in the 3rd, free of evil aspects
of the malcfics, it is evidence that the brother or sister
is in good health and staying cither in his or her own
home or in the place to which the enquirer knows that the
relative has traveled. If besides being in the 3rd house
74 HORARY ASTROLOGY
dignilied, the significator behold the benelic planets by
conjunction, sextile or trine, then the relative is happy
and wants nothing. If the significator behold the hene-
fics by square or opposition with reception, the relative is
in health and contented. If the significator in the 3rd is
aspccted by the malefics without reception, the relative
is in health but perplexed and sorrowful, but if the as-
pects be with reception, the relative will shortly evade
the difficulties.
If the ruler of the 3rd is in the 4th, the relative is oc-
cupied in matters of gain in the country in which he lives.
The ruler of the 3rd in the 5th unaffected, denotes that
the relative is having a pleasant time, enjoying diversion
and amusements. If he be afflicted in the Sth, it is evi-
dence that the relative is discontented and restless.
If the ruler of the 3rd be afflicted in the 6th, Sth or
12th, then judge that the relative is in danger and may
suffer in health ; also if the ruler of the 6th be in the 3rd
without essential dignities. If the ruler the 6th be in
the 3rd joined with the ruler of the Sth •r entering com-
bustion, at the same time with other testimonies of his
being ill, there is reason to fear that he will die.
The ruler of the 3rd in the 7th house, the relative is
still in the country to which he went and indifferently
well. His significator in the Sth, he is in fear of death,
which fear has substance if the significator is afflicted or
going into combustion or going to conjunction with the
ruler of the Bth. If the significator be in the 9th, he is
going to some country more distant than the one to
which he removed.
If the significator be in the l#th, well aspectcd, he has
found good employment or office. If combust or afflicted,
then he has met with some reversal of fortune.
THIRD HOUSE QUESTIONS 75
The signihcator in the Uth, joined to the ruler of the
iith, he is well situated with friends and is happy, but if
evil planets afflict him, he is nut content.
The significator in the 12th well aspccted, he is engag-
ed in keeping cattle or horses, or a hotel, or in some sim-
ilar occupation. But if badly aspected he is in trouble,
and if at the same time he be in a fixed sign, there is fear
that he is in prison; if his significator be retrograde he
will escape.
The significator in the ascendant, he is well situated,
and if well aspected, he is well respected.
If the significator be in the 2nd house afflicted, then
there is to be feared similar evils to those indicated by
the significator being in the 12th house, because the 2nd
house of the enquirer is the 12th house of the brother or
sister. Yet although the 2nd house is the 12th of the
person enquired about, the 12th of the figure still stands
as the strongest indicator of imprisonment; likewise the
6th house of the figure itself for sickness; the 8th of the
figure for death; the 9th of the figure for journeys, and
so in like manner for the rest of the twelve houses.
Enquire concerning any relative by a similar method,
using the 4th house and its ruler for the father, also for
the parents if considered as a unity; the 5th house and
its ruler for a son or a daughter; the 7th house and its
ruler for the husband or wife ; the 9th house for a brother-
in-law or sister-in-law; the 10th house for the mother;
the 12th house for a maternal aunt or uncle, and the 6th
house for a paternal aunt or uncle, and sf) on.
Whether News, Reports, Rumors, etc., be True or False
The first consideration is whether the rumors, reports
or news is to the advantage or disadvantage of the en-
quirer. If it is to his advantage then the indications
70 HOllARY A SINOLOGY
supporting the credibility of the reports, etc., are to have
the ruler of the 1st house or the Moon or the dispositor
of the Moon or of the first house ruler in an angle or in a
fixed sign; more especially so if at the same time the
Moon or Mercury be in angles or in fixed signs and in
good aspect to benefics or to the Sun; and if separating
from malefics and applying to benefics it is additional
evidence of their credibility.
Mercury or the Moon applying to a retrograde planet
or Mercury retrograde indicate that evil rumours will
prove to be nothing of importance. On the other hand,
the ruler of the first, or the Moon, or the dispositor of
the Moon or of the ruler of the 1st, applying to evil as-
pects with other planets, especially from fixed signs,
tends to confirm evil news. The lord of the ascendant
combust and the Moon in far south latitude are tokens
that the truth shall remain secret. Mercury in conjunc-
tion, square or opposition of Mars, especially in movable
signs and at the same time in cadent houses, is an almost
infallible sign of some kind of deception being practiced.
Counsel or Advice from a Neighbor, Relative or Friend
A figure erected for the time the advice is given and
the enquirer understands its substance, will reveal what
consideration should be given to such counsel.
Sun, Jupiter or Venus in the 10th house and Moon
applying to a good aspect to the lord of the ascendant
denotes sincerity and benevolence on the part of the one
giving the advice. Uranus, Saturn, Mars, Dragon's Tail
in the 10th or Moon square or opposition of the ruler or
occupant of the 1st house denotes evil motives on the
part of the one giving the advice.
Advice may be well meant, and still turn out to the
detriment of the cnquiier. To answer the question as to
whether the advice is sound, examine the fourth house,
THIRD HOUSE QUESTIONS 77
indicating the end of the matter. Malefics in the 4th or
the ruler of the 4th afflicting the ruler of the ascendant
or planet in the 1st house, or the ruler of the 4th retro-
grade, arc testimonies that the advice, if followed, will
bring detriment.
Messages Sent by Wire or Letter, etc.
When will message be received?
When can reply be expected?
If received, will reply be favorable to querent?
The first house stands for the enquirer and if the per-
son to whom the message is sent is a relative then choose
the proper house to represent him, e.g., ihc 5th for son
or daughter, 3rd for cousin or brother, 4th for father, 10th
for mother, etc. Tor one not related, choose the 7th
house. If the message be sent to a government official,
etc., the Sun or the ruler of the 10th or to lesser degree a
planet in the 10th may represent him; if to an employer,
the 10th or the, ruler of the 10th, etc. The partner or the
marriage partner or one unrelated by marriage or by
family ties may he represented by the 7th house.
If the Moon is in conjunction with, or have other as-
pects with the ruler of the house representing the ad-
dressee, the message has been received. A reply may be
expected by the time which is itidicatcd for the comple-
tion of any aspect between the ruler of the third or the
Moon to the ruler of the ascendant.
The nature of the reply can be judged by the nature of
the planet from which the Moon or the ruler of the 3rd
separates by aspect. If a benefic planet, then the answer
will be kindly and well disposed towards the enquirer.
If the planet is a malefic and the aspect is also malefic,
such as a square or opposition, judge the answer to be
disappointing, or to contain some disagreeable element.
7y HOKAHY ASTROTjOGY
Regarding messages requesting money, the same rules
apply for receipt and reply as for any •ther message,
except that the enquirer will probably be more anxious
for an affirmative reply. So that it is well to look for
additional testimony. It the Moon applies to a square
or opposition with a malefic before separating from the
ruler or occupant of the house representing the addressee,
there was some delay before the message was received.
But if this application to a malefic happens after the
Moon has separated from ruler of the house representing
the addressee, then the delay occurs to the reply sent by
the addressee, or even in the actual act of his making the
reply. If there is reception between the Moon, or be-
tween ruler or occupant of the 3rd with the ruler of the
house of the addressee, even though the aspect is a square
or opposition, the reply to the message will be favorable.
In messages sent for money the ruler of the second can
receive the same evaluation as the ruler of the ascendant
when judging a horary figure, This is especially true if
the addressee is a blood relative of the enquirer,
If a messenger be sent with or for money, then the
messenger is represented by the ruler of the 5th house,
and the rulers for judging remain as in the above by sub-
stituting the ruler of the 5th in the place of the ruler of
the 3rd. In case the messenger has been sent to a distant
place or carries a large sum, or the country be in a state
of peril, as for example during war, then particular atten-
tion must be paid to Mars, for if he be in the house of
journeys, either the 3rd or the 9th, then there is danger
of thieves or robbers; but if benches are in those houses
the messenger travels safely.
Note regarding time when reply may be received:
When the usual measures of time are inadequate or do
not seem to fit the case, then it is sometimes possible to
estimate the time by looking in the ephemeris and noting
THIRD HOUSE QUESTIONS T9
the day when the significator of the reply makes a sextile,
trine or conjunction with the ruler of the ascendant •£
the horary figure, and expect to receive an answer on
that date.
80 HORARY ASTROLOGY
FOURTH HOUSE QUESTIONS
Purchasing Property
HE first house, its ruler or occupant, and the
Moon represent the buyer or enquirer; the 7th
house, its ruler or any planets therein represent
the seller. The 4th house and its ruler represent
the property. The 10th house and its ruler rcp-
resent the price to he paid, and the profit, yield
or revenue to be derived from the property.
Tf the rulers of the 1st and 7th are applying to a favor-
able aspect to each other or to occupants of the 1st or 7th,
the purchaser and seller have no difTiculty in coming to
agreement as to price, terms, etc. If the signilicators be
at all dignified, the purchase will be consummated, but if
application be by square or opposition, then there will be
much bargaining and argument before the business is
concluded.
Quality of the Property
If malcfics arc in the 4tli house, undignified, or the
ruler id the 4th retrograde or afflicted, the buyer will not
benefit or hold the property long. Benches in the 4th
indicate that the buyer will be fortunate in the possession
of the properly and will benefit by it. The ruler of the
4th strong and well aspected indicates benefit to the
buyer.
Rcncfics in the 10th house indicate good revenue from
whatever the property may yield. If it be a house, then
it will rent or lease well; if it be a farm, good crops will
be secured; if it be a mine, good profit from working,
leasing or operating it. Retrograde planets in the 10th,
the revenue will not accrue, but will he lost through ac-
cident or mismanagement.
FOURTH HOUSK QL'KSTIONS 81
Removing from One Place to Another
The 1st house and its ruler and planet therein represent
the enquirer; the 4th house and its ruler and planet there-
in the place where he is; and the 7th house and its ruler
and planet therein the place to which he will remove.
If the 4th house and its ruler be m»re fortunate than
the 7th house and its ruler the enquirer had better remain
where he is. If the 7th house and its ruler be more for-
tunate or better aspccted to the ruler of the 1st house or
planets therein, then he had better move. The advantage
should be unmistakably on the side of the 7th house to
indicate the advisability of removal.
The Moon is also to be considered. If she separate from
a fortunate planet it indicates the enquirer is leaving
something good, and therefore should remain. If the
Moon apply to a fortunate planet, then it is favorable for
removal. If the Moon separate from aspects of the male-
fics, let him remove; if the Moon apply to malefics, let
him remain. Good planets in the 1st house or the 4th
house, it is best to stay. If they are in the 7th house, it
is favoraMe for removing.
Removal of Place of Business
The preceding applies more particularly to the domi-
cile. In questions concerning business the 10th house
represents the business, the 4th house the place where
the business is carried on. In questions of removal from
one place to another, judge the place to which it is pro-
posed to remove to be represented by the 7th house. If
the ruler of the 10th or the Sun be forming more favor-
able aspects to the cusp of the 7th or its ruler or planet
therein, than they do to the 4th cusp, its ruler or any
planets therein, it argues for advantage by removal to a
new location. In general, where a change of location is
contemplated, the testimonies favorable to change should
82 HORARY ASTROLOGY
much outweigh those indicating remaining. In judging
such a question make certain that the ascendant, its ruler
or planet therein, is strong and clear of affliction, retro-
gradation, or combustion before advising radical changes,
such as a change of location.
Choosing a New House, Apartment for Rent or Purchase
In a question of this sort it is well to remember that
astrology is to be used to judge the impondcrahles and
by no means to supcrcedo judgment determined from the
ordinary sources of information. Consequently the more
perfectly the limitations in regard to this question are
understood, the more easily a correct astrological judg-
ment may be given. Briefly, the limitations that govern
the choice of a domicile arc: availability, financial ability
of the enquirer, convenience, salubriousness, beauty, ac-
cessibility and its suitability to meet the particular re-
quirements of the querent. The imponderables are the
nature and character of the people adjacent to or con-
nected with the location of the domicile ; and those parts
of a domicile which are concealed by construction, such
as foundations, framework, plumbing, wiring, etc. The
"micro-climate" is also difficult to correctly appreciate,
The micro-climate includes the magnetism of the earth
on the spot where the domicile stands, the air currents
that carry smoke, gases, dust and the effluvia of man,
machines, animals and vegetation, as well as the availabil-
ity of sunshine, exposure to evaporation, and the con-
cealed means of drainage.
If the location desired is within the limits of a suburb
or a specific district and the enquirer desires to know in
which direction in that suburb or district to explore, then
use the direction indicated by houses, and choose that
direction which is represented by the best conditioned
planet. The point of the compass can frequently be
given with precision by this method;
FOURTH HOUSE QUESTIONS 83
The first house is due east, or easternmost point of the
district, the south part of the district is represented by
the 10th house, the west part by the 7th house, and the
north part by the 4th house. Use the degrees from car-
dinal points which the planet may occupy to denote cor-
responding degrees on the compass.
In purchasing a house it is more important to find ele-
ments of permanency than wrhen simply renting. Signifi-
cations of permanency are as follows: Ruler of the as-
cendant, or planet in the Ist house, representing the quer-
ent, should not be retrograde. Fixed signs on the angles
of the 4th and 10th are indications of permanency. The
heavy planets Jupiter and Saturn are better for perman-
ency than light, swift-moving planets such as Moon or
Mercury,
Purchase of Cars, New or Second-Hand
The fourth house indicates vehicles, since it is the
second house from the 3rd, i.e., the means or tools of
locomotion.
If the enquirer is considering buying a car the Moon
is to be carefully examined to determine the condition or
quality of the car best suited to his needs, and the 4th
house indicates the car's value to him. Tf the Moon is
dignified in any way and free of disabilities, then the en-
quirer may be judged to be well suited by whatever car
he chooses to purchase, that is, his judgment is good. A
still more potent indication of proper value to the enquir-
er is to have the ruler •£ the 4th or a planet in the 4th
house form a sextile or trine to the ruler of the ascendant
or planet therein. Conversely if Saturn, Mars, Uranus or
Dragon's Tail be in the 4th the purchase is undesirable.
If the enquirer has already decided on buying a par-
ticular car then a horary figure may be erected as a natus
of the car. Likewise if a car has already been purchased
84 HORARY ASTROLOGY
a natus may be erected based upon the moment of com-
ing into querent's possession. If beneflcs are in the angles
or in the 5th or 9th house, or rule them, then he will have
good service from the car; and on the contrary, malefics
in those places denote trouble, loss or vexation connected
with operating the car.
In buying a used car there is more danger of hidden
defects and for that reason it is advisable to pay very
close attention to the malefics for indications of defects
and the places where they may exist. Crystallization or
excessive wear may be shown by Saturn. Afflicted Mer-
cury indicates scored surfaces, such as pistons, valves or
bearings. Mars indicates fractures or bent or warped
parts or wear from over-heating or lack of lubrication.
In judging the parts of the car f»r defects use the signs
of the zodiac t® indicate the form or function of the parts :
Pisces, indicates tires or wheels, Aquarius, indicates axle
and differential. Capricorn, steering gear, knuckles and
braking system. Sagittarius, springs. Libra, upholstery
and cushions. Scorpio, exhaust, muffler and rear end.
Cancer, body shell and floor of car. Virgo, gas tank, tub-
ing and carbureter. Leo, engine and frame of chassis.
Gemini, steering wheel, instrument panel, electric wiring,
shift gears. Taurus, front frame, hood, battery, Ignition
and controls. Aries, all front part of car.
FIFTH HOUSK QUESTIONS 85
FIFTH HOUSE QUESTIONS
Will the Enquirer have Children?
-
f" """! HERE will be children if there are fruitful signs
on the cusps of the Lst and 5th houses. The
ruler of the 5th house strong, or aspected by the
Moon, or by the ruler of the 1st house, or a
planet in the Sth aspected by the ruler of the
5th are favorable indications. The ruler of the
Sth in the 1st, the ruler of the 1st in the 5th is favorable.
Translation of light between the significators is favor-
able but indicates more delay.
If Gemini, Leo or Virgo he on the ascendant or 5th
house, or Uranus, Sun, Mars or Saturn therein, it is a
strong indication of barrenness. The Sun howevet, is
inimical to the life of the children rather than preventive
of their birth.
If a Woman be with Child?
If she have cause to think she is in that condition a
horary figure may help to verify the suspicion or may
show it groundless. Indications of existing pregnancy are
given by the lord of the ascendant or the Moon having
any aspect to the lord of the Sth, or if there has occurred
any translation of light between them, also the ruler of
the ascendant or the Moon in the Sth free from affliction
of the malefics or of the rulers of the 6th, Sth or 12th;
Jujiiter in the 1st, 5th, 7th or 11th, free of aspects of Sat-
urn, Mars or Uranus; also the Moon in the 7th aspecting
the ruler of the 7th in the 11th, or vice versa. Adverse
indications, such as barren signs on cusps of Sth house or
ascendant, or malefics in those places, give negative
testimony.
86 HOBARY ASTROLOGY
Will there be Safe Delivery?
A normal birth and healthy issue may be assured when
the fifth house, the Moon and the ascendant are fortified
by benefics or disposed of by them. Uranus in the ascend-
ant or in the 5th or afflicting the Moon may indicate
danger of miscarriage, and in such case the misfortune
may be guarded against by taking particular care to keep
the expectant mother free of nervous or emotional strain
during the time •f pregnancy.
Will the Issue be Male or Female?
Masculine planets are Sun, Mars, Jupiter; indetermin-
ate or neutral arc Saturn and Mercury; feminine are
Moon and Venus. Odd signs are masculine, even signs
are feminine. The significators are :
Sign on cusp of ascendant
Sign on cusp of 5th house
Sign occupied by Moon
Sign occupied by ruler of 5th house
Sign occupied by ruler of ascendant
Sign occupied by Venus
Sign occupied by Jupiter
Planet ruling 5th house
Planet ruling ascendant
Naturally, where there are so many possible significa-
tors it may be difficult to come to a decision. One rule
is to take the majority of significators that agree on one
or the other sex. That is, if five or more significators are
masculine it indicates a boy, and live feminine, a girl. A
better rule is to determine if possible the strongest planet
ruling the question as the leading significator and base
decision upon its testimony, unless there is a heavy ma-
jority of other testimonies against it. Note that a planet
FIFTH HOUSE QUESTIONS S7
in the 5th takes precedence over a planet ruling the sign
on the cusp of the 5th, and the ruler of the 5th takes pre-
cedence over the planet ruling the ascendant. A mascu-
line planet in a masculine sign takes precedence over a
planet that is neutral or over a planet in a sign opposite
to its sex, and a feminine planet in a feminine sign takes
precedence over a masculine or neutral planet in a femin-
ine sign.
Twins
Twins may be suspected when the ascending sign and
the signs occupied by the Snn and the Moon are all bi-
corporcal. The common signs Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius
and Pisces are called bicorporeal signs. The birth of
twins is not probable except the horoscope of the mother
is favorable to such Issue.
Time of Delivery
The average time of intrauterine life is 273 days, or
ten lunar months, or nine calendar months. .Longer than
average time is indicated by Moon in Aquarius or Cap-
ricorn, opposed by Saturn; Neptune is also a planet that
may cause a longer than average period. A shorter than
average period is indicated by the lighter planets Moon,
Mercury and Venus, especially when they are swift in
motion. Tf the normally expected time of delivery be
near at the time of the question an estimate of the prob-
able date of birth may be made by noting the sign on the
cusp of the 5th house, whether it be cardinal, fixed or
common. Cardinal signs so situated argue for early de-
livery, common signs average, and fixed signs a late
delivery. Other signs of early birth are the ruler of the
5th a light planet and at the same time the dispositor of
the Moon a light planet. The degrees between the Moon
and a perfect aspect of the ruler •f the 5th, or between
the ruler of the ascendant and the ruler of the 5th, pro-
vided this does not involve passing into another sign, may
«8 HORARY ASTROLOaY
give a clue to the exact time of the birth, allowing degrees
to represent days, weeks or months, as the circumstances
seem to allow.
Concerning Inventions, Projects or any Creative Work
of the Enquirer
All matters which may he regarded as created by the
enquirer may bo associated with the 5th house, as well as
children, love affairs and amusements.
If an enquirer have any invention which he wishes to
develop commercially or sell, examine the ruler of the
1st and the Moon as representing the enquirer, the 2nd
and its ruler or planet therein for his means or wealth,
and the 5th and its ruler and planets therein, for the in-
vention. The ruler of the 5th strong, or bencfic planets
in the Sth indicate the invention is valuable. If the ruler
of the 5th apply to good aspects of the ruler of the 2nd
or to planets in the 2nd, the enquirer will receive good
income or price for the invention.
Good aspects of the ruler of the 5th to the ruler of the
7th indicate someone who will desire to purchase or
acquire the invention.
Messengers or Ambassadors
The lord of the Sth, its occupants, and the Moon repre-
sent a messenger or ambassador. If the enquiry be in
regard to whether the messenger or ambassador will be
successful in his mission or journey or procure that for
which he has been dispatched, then note what significa-
tors the ruler of the 5th or the Moon separate from or
apply to by aspect. Those significators from which the
ruler of the 5th or the Moon are separating indicate what
has taken place previous to time of question. Those sig-
nificators receiving application indicate that which is still
to take place.
FIFTH HOUSR QUESTIONS 89
The ruler of the 5th separating from the ruler of the
7th or occupant, and applying to the ruler of the 1st or
occupant, indicates that the messenger has effected the
matter for which he was sent and is returning. Separat-
ing from a benefic he brings a good answer, while separ-
ating from a maleiic indicates the contrary.
The ruler of the 5th meeting adverse aspects to the
malefics before separating from the ruler of the 7th in-
dicates impediments on the journey to the place where he
has gone, or some hindrance in the transaction of the
business, and if these adverse aspects are met after sep-
arating from the ruler of the 7th, then the messenger
meets difficulties on the return journey. Should the ruler
of the 5th apply by square or opposition to the ruler of
the 7th, then the party to whom the message is sent will
frame some delay or excuse, yet if the signiheators be in
reception the messenger will be well received.
The time of the messenger's return is indicated by the
ruler of the 5th coming to sex tile or trine of the ruler of
the ascendant. It the Moon separates from the ruler of
the Sth and apply to the ruler of the ascendant, then news
from the messenger will soon be received.
The usual rules for judging time are to be used in this
case.
90 HOEARY ASTROLOGY
SIXTH HOUSE QUESTIONS
LL questions in regard to sickness, whether it be
long or short, belong to this house; also ques-
tions in regard to servants, dependents, paternal
kindred; small animals, such as chickens, rabbits,
sheep, hogs, are denoted by the 6th house, the
planets therein and the ruler of the 6th house.
Losses through the persons or things denoted by the
6th house are foretold when malefics, as Saturn, Mars,
Uranus, Keptune or Dragon's Tail occupy it, while bene-
fics therein show profit or gain.
Health
In questions of sickness benches in the 6th show
speedy recovery, and if they be strong or well aspected,
so much the better. However, in such a case the probable
cause of the illness has been too full of luxurious living,
and the enquirer should be warned to live more abstem-
iously.
The ruler of the Cith applying to adverse aspect of the
ruler of the 1st or occupant shows that the illness is in-
creasing, as also if the ruler of the 6th be in the 8th or
12th house.
The ruler of the 6th in a cadent house, except the 12th
house, shows that the disease is not important.
The ruler of the 1st house angular, strong, or unafflict-
ed shows that the enquirer is in no danger . The Moon
decreasing in light while applying to conjunction, square
or opposition of Saturn, unless the patient is already
recovering, is a dangerous indication, if the Moon be
separating from the opposition of the Sun and applying
to the square or opposition of Mars there is danger of a
fatal termination of the illness.
SIXTH HOUSB QUESTIONS 91
M»st questions in regard to health belong more proper-
ly to the subject of Medical Astrology than to Horary,
and the student is referred to treatises on that subject,
but some of the elements which may be involved in
horary astrology arc given here, as follows;
Apportionment of zodiacal signs to the physical body
are in this manner: Aries represents the head, Taurus,
the face and throat, Gemini, the shoulders, chest and
arms; Cancer, the breasts and stomach; Leo, back and
heart; Virgo, the intestines; Libra, the kidneys; Scorpio,
the colon, bladder, excretory and generative organs;
Sagittarius, hips and thighs; Capricorn, knees; Aquarius,
ankles; Pisces, the feet.
Each sign, however, in questions of physiology or
health, belongs to a cross, and a disturbance in one sign
of the cross may produce physiological effects in the part
of the body indicated by any other member of the cross.
The cardinal cross is Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn,
and physiological disturbances in any of the organs indi-
cated by any member of the cardinal cross may produce
a diseased manifestation in any other member. Thus,
suppose a planetary affliction in the sign Aries, indicating
some trouble with the head. That trouble may manifest
in some disease in the body in which not only the head
will be involved, but also the stomach and kidneys, cor-
responding to the cardinal signs, Cancer and Libra. In
the same manner an affliction in the sign Taurus, repre-
senting the throat, may produce a disease that will affect
the organ represented by Leo, the heart. Thus, diphtheria
often ends fatally by affecting the heart. In the same
way the common cross, showing afflictions in Pisces, the
feet, often takes effect in a disease represented by Gemini,
the lungs.
The theory of Medical Astrology is that wherever a
planet is situated in a sign there is a corresponding force
92 HOllARY ASTROLOGY
or activity in the part of the physical body represented by
that sign. The places where there is the greatest activity
are, naturally, the places where errors in the use of f»rce
or strength may show forth as disease; therefore it is
possible to diagnose diseases by means of astrology or to
assist in their diagnosis. But this is a special branch of
astrology and should not be attempted presumptuously.
For instance, in Horary Astrology it is not necessary
to tell a person where his disease is; he generally knows
that already. It may be of service to tell him whether
his disease is serious or not, and in some cases possibly
by foretelling improvement to give him hope to stimulate
him into endeavor for his own recovery. Also it is pos-
sible to analyze his mental and moral nature, and to find
what is the probable cause of his difficulty as viewed
from a moral or philosophical standpoint, and this prob-
ably is its greatest use and highest value.
Whether Benefit would be Derived
From Certain Systems of Healing
As there are many different systems of healing, a
patient may be in a quandary as to which system to
choose. For example, there are sun-cures, air-cures,
water-cures, diet-cures, metaphysical cures, etc., etc.
One of the first considerations in all such questions
is the faith or belief of the patient. He is not likely to
receive benefit from any system except he have faith in
the system, or in the practitioner of the system, and of
course if he have a prejudice against any system that
will be an additional obstacle against receiving any bene-
fit from its application.
Usually it is best to look to the cause of a disease as
the first clement in forming judgment, and a second ele-
ment is the source from which the information in regard
to a cure has come. For example, if the advice has come
SIXTH HOUSE QUESTIONS 93
from a friend, neighbor or relative, then the soundness of
the advice may be examined by the principles laid down
In the section devoted to the third house. If the patient
has dug up the information by his own efforts, then the
decision may be assisted by consideration of the sound-
ness of his own judgmer.t. In such a case good aspects
of Jupiter to the Moon, Mercury, ruler the ascendant
or planet in 1st house or ruler of the sixth house or planet
therein are very important; and will overweigh many
adverse indications, for Jupiter is essentially the lord of
sound judgment.
Lost Animals
For small animals such as dogs, sheep, fowl, etc., use
the 6th house. For large animals such as horses, cows,
etc., use the 12th house.
The Moon is the principal significator of the animal.
If the ruler of the 6th or the Moon is in the 12th, the
animal is probably in the pound. If the Moon is in an
angle the animal is in an enclosure; if the Moon is in a
succedent house the animal is outside, but near an en-
closure ; if the Moon Is in a cadcnt house, except the 12th,
the animal is at large and running about. Other hints as
to where to look for the animal may be gathered from
the nature of the sign ♦ccupied by the Moon. Water
signs or Aquarius show places close to water, such as
ponds, streams, etc. If the neighborhood is near a har-
bour Capricorn shows it to be near or aboard a ship. The
Moon in human signs indicate the animal to he close to
human habitations or places frequented by humans, such
as xi lay grounds, streets, etc. In Taurus indicates the
animals to be in pastures; in Leo, hills or woodlands or
wild uninhabited places; in Aries, hills or upland country.
Moon with a good planet indicates the animal to be in
the hands of honest people who will make an effort to
return it.

Moon with a good planet indicates the animal to be in
the hands of honest people who will make an effort to
return it.
94 HORARY ASTROLOGY
Indications of finding the animal or having it returned
are shown by the Moon aspecting Jupiter, Venus or the
ascendant. The same result if the ruler of the 6th should
have favorable aspects to the benefics, or be found in the
2nd, 5th or 11th house. Other favorable indications are
if the term dispositor of the Moon, or the ruler of the 4th,
or the ruler of the 6th, form a trine of the Sun outside the
angles of the figure.
Servants or Tenants
If the question concern servants, their character, dis-
position, faithfulness, etc., then benefics in the 6th denote
good and faithful servants, agreeable in disposition and
gain through their employrnent. Malefics denote the
reverse. Mars in the 6th or Mercury in the 6th afflicted
fey Mars, indicates dishonesty in the servant. Saturn in-
dicates lazy or slothful servants.
If the question relate to the hiring of a servant or leas-
ing to a tenant, observe the aspects, if any, between the
ruler of the 1st or planet therein or the Moon and the
ruler of the 6th or planet therein, and judge the relation-
ship accordingly. Good aspects between the significators
•f the 2nd or 4th and the significator of the 6th are indica-
tions of gain through the servant or that the servant or
tenant will guard the enquirer's interest. Good aspect of
the significator of the 6th to the significator of the 10th,
the servant or tenant protects the enquirer's honour or
reputation, and in like manner adverse aspects indicate
that the servant or tenant will injure the enquirer in the
matter indicated by the significator involved.
SEVENTH HOUSE QUESTIONS
SEVENTH HOUSE QUESTIONS
Whether a Man shall Marry
ONSIDER the Moon, Venus and the ruler of the
jClaJI 7th h*usc or planet therein. The Moon aspectcd
Wv| to the Sun is favorable, indicating that the pro-
®® grcss of life and general affairs are benefitted by
marriage, and that the enquirer's disposition and
inclination are bent toward matrimony. Venus
well situated and strong indicates that the enquirer is
successful in his approach to and association with women,
and that his attachments or attractions will be to women
of good quality.
The 7th house, its ruler and the planets therein describe
the physical appearance and temperament of the person
he will marry. (See Reference 1.)
The ruler of the 7th house in the 7th, or in the 1st,
favors marriage. Venus in the 7th or strongly aspected
to the ascendant indicates marriage.
If the 7th house be occupied by a malefic or the ruler
of the 7th adversely aspected by a malefic, the marriage
is not likely; nor desirable if it be consummated.
To have Venus weak or afflicted by a malefic argues
for little affection or happiness in marriage.
Strong testimony for offspring is also a testimony for
marriage, for which of course the 5th house is to be
examined.
For happiness in marriage the 11th house is the dom-
inant factor.
Whether a Woman shall Marry
The Sun represents a woman's husband i: she be mar-
ried. If the Sun or ruler of the 7th house be in the 1st,
9ft HORARY ASTROI-OGY
or Venus be joined with the Sun or with the ruler of the
7th, judge that she will marry. The Sun in good aspect
to the Moon is favorable, as are als» favorable testimonies
concerning the 5th house or its ruler.
The 7th house, the planets therein and the ruler of the
7th house describe the character, disposition and appear-
ance of the man whom she may marry. (See Reference 1.)
Time of Marriage
The general nature of this question is more readil}'
answered from the gcnethliacal horoscope than from a
horary question, but if a genethliacal figure is not avail-
able, then the horary figure is judged in this manner:
The particular application of the significator that may
represent marriage, as the Moon or ruler of the ascend-
ant, Venus, or to ruler of the 7th in the case of a man.
In the case of a woman, ruler of ascendant, Sun, or less
preferably^ Mars, to ruler of the 7th, Also if the signifi-
cator be swift and the testimonies numerous, then cardin-
al signs give days when angular, weeks when succedent,
and months when cadent. The common signs give weeks,
months and years, and the fixed signs give months and
years.
Whether the Enquirer shall Marry a Particular Person
Who may be Desired
The ruler of the 7th in the 1st, especially if in conjunc-
tion with the ruler of the 1st, or the Moon or Venus in
the case of a man, going to a favorable aspect with the
ruler of the 7th, gives an affirmative answer.
In the case •f a woman, substitute the Sun for the
Moon as above, Venus, however, in the case of a woman
merely indicates the desire to marry.
If the ruler of the 7th apply to scxtile or trine of the
significator of the enquirer from the 11th or 10th to the
SKVENTH HOITSE QUESTIONS
1st, or from the 9th or 5th to the 7th without frustration
or retrogradation or interference before the aspect is com-
pleted, it argues for the marriage.
If there be square or opposition between the significa-
tors without reception, the matter comes to nothing.
Whether a Married Couple Living Apart
Shall Live together Again
Whichever one proposes the question receives the 1st
house for his significator, and the 7th is assigned to the
absent partner.
The ruler of the 7th and of ascendant applying to fav-
orable aspect, or the ruler of the 1st in the 7th unafflicted,
or a translation of light between the rulers of the 1st and
7th, indicate reunion. To have the significator of cither
party retrograde is unfavorable, and the significators of
the two parties applying to square or opposition is assur-
ance that they do not desire to return to each other.
Divorce
If a person ask will his or her life be better and happier
from procuring of a divorce all the objections have to be
carefully considered. In a horary figure erected to an-
swer such a question the planet Uranus is of prime im-
portance and without some strong indication from
Uranus there will hardly be desire or opportunity for
divorce. The ruler of the ascendant or any planets there-
in afflicted by the ruler of the 7th or any planets therein ;
Uranus in an angle especially the 1st or 7th; either lumin-
ary in conjunction, square or opposition of Uramis, are
all indications pointing to the probable necessity of
divorce.
Uranus in the 7th or afflicting the Moon, if the en-
quirer is a man, or afflicting Sun or Mars, if the enquirer
is a woman, shows that it is the partner that most desires
98 HORARY ASTROLOGY
the divorce. If other questions be involved in divorce,
such as alimony, property, children, respectability,—the
appropriate houses arc to be examined; the Sth and 11th
for children, the 2nd and 8th for financial settlements, the
9th for legal advice, the 4th for property such as houses
and lands, and the 10th for the effect upon the reputation.
Cruelty, indifference and selfishness of the partner are
shown by malefics in the 7th. Saturn shows coldness and
selfishness. Mars shows quarrelsomeness, cruelty, pas-
sion and arrogance. Sun shows ambition and sclf-ccntcr-
edncss. Moon and Mercury show fickleness, especially if
afflicted.
The ruler of the ascendant retrograde or a retrograde
planet in the ascendant indicates that the enquirer will
drop the matter, even though legal proceedings have been
started.
Whether Enquirer's Affection is Reciprocatei
The ascendant or planet therein and the Moon denote
the enquirer, the 7th house or planet therein the person
asked about. Equality of affection is shown by the rulers
of 1st and 7th in each other's houses, or in mutual recep-
tion, or in conjunction, sextile or trine with each other.
Benches in the 7th show that the beloved one will repay
with interest whatever devotion is given him or her.
Malefics on the contrary denote coldness, selfishness and
self-seeking. Dragon's Tail or an afflicted Mercury show
a liar and a deceiver. If the person enquired about is a
female pay particular attention to the Sun, for any strong
aspects to the Sun other than from the Moon or ruler of
the ascendant denote a rival for the lady's affection for
whom she has a high regard.
Self-Deception
A person may ask "Am I deceiving myself in regard
to the matter uppermost in my thoughts?"
SEVKNTH HOUSE QUESTIONS 99
This question may apply to any desired object, includ-
ing that of affection. A frequent indicator of self-
deception is the planet Neptune. If Neptune is in the
ascendant or in conjunction, parallel, square or opposition
with Sun, Moon, Mercury or ruler of the ascendant or
planet therein, there is danger of self-deception. Also if
Neptune be posited in the house, or strongly aspecting
the ruler of the house denoting the matter involved, as
for instance, the 7th for a lover, the 5th for an offspring,
11th for a friend, etc., etc.
Benefics out •f their dignities in the ascendant or Mer-
cury there, afflicted, likewise inclines to indicate self-
deception. Dragon's Head in the ascendant or conjunct
the luminaries is an adverse indication, as indicating
over-optimism.
If the object desired is not a person, but sonic matter
allied .to ambition, the Moon or ruler of the ascendant
combust shows disappointment in the matter.
Lawsuits
The ruler of the ascendant strong or more favorable
than the ruler of the 7th, the equirer wins the case; and
if the ruler of the 7th be strongest, the adversary wins.
Also that person loses whose significator is in his oppon-
ent's house.
The Sun or Moon in the 1st house favors the enquirer,
and if in the 7th, the adversary is favored.
The ruler of the 10th house indicates the judge before
whom the case is tried. The ruler of the 10th direct in-
dicates that the judge will settle the case speedily and
endeavor to be fair. The ruler of the 10th retrograde, the
judge does not strive to terminate the case and may not
act impartially. The ruler of the 10th in adverse aspect
to the significator of either party indicates that the judge
will be against that party.
100 HORARY ASTROLOGY
The ruler of the 10th in his own dignities in the 10th
house, the judge will act with unimpeachable honour. If
a planet without dignities be in the 10th and have no
reception or aspect to the ruler of the 10th, the judge will
not be satisfactory to either party.
That party whose significators are weakest or most
adversely aspectcd by the malefics will receive the most
prejudice in his contention.
Whether a Proposed Visit
Will Find a Person in his Home or Office
This is a good question to test the state of the en-
quirer's mind, whether it be working in harmony with
the Universal Mind. A well balanced mind will ask this
question at such a time that the horary figure will answer
it correctly- A distracted or eccentric mind may fail to
receive a definite or correct answer.
If the person whom the enquirer wishes to visit is not
a relative, his signiflcator is the 7th house and its ruler,
but if the person is a relative take the appropriate house,
as for instance the 5th for a son or daughter, the 4th for
the father, the 10th for the mother, etc. The 1st house and
its ruler represent the enqturer. If the person is one in
authority or in a position to grant the querent favors the
proper house is the llth.
If the ruler of the house representing the one of whom
enquiry is made is found in any of the angular houses it
indicates that he is at homo or in his office; if in a sue-
cedent house he is not far away from that place, but if
in a cadent house he is far away and probably traveling
at the time.
If the ruler of the ascendant apply by a perfect aspect

posed visit, it indicates that he will be at home, and if
there be no such aspect but a planet transfer the light of
the ruler of the ascendant to the planet that rules the
house of the one of whom enquiry is made then the en-
quirer will hear of the person by a third party, who will
be described in his character and appearance by the planet
that transfers the light of the two significators.
Things Lost or Stolen
The signilicator of the thing missing is the Moon. If
the Moon apply to favorable aspect or conjunction with
the ruler of the 1st or the ruler of the sign in which the
Moon is placed, the missing thing will be found. The
Moon, or the ruler of the house in which the Moon is
placed, separating from the ruler of the 6th, 8th or 12th
house and applying to the ruler of the 2nd argues for
recovery of the missing property.
The Moon well aspected by fortunate planets indicates
that the thing is in the hands of trustworthy people, and
if one of these planets aspect the ascendant or its ruler,
the person holding the property will restore it to the
enquirer.
Where the Missing Thing May Be
The place where the missing thing may be is indicated
by the sign in which the Moon is placed. Thus, if the
Moon be in Aries, the missing thing is due cast of the
enquirer, and if in Cancer it is due north, and so each sign
represents some point of the compass, according to
previous instructions.
If the Moon is in the same sign as the ruler of the
ascendant, the missing thing is in the house of the owner,
if it is in the sign adjoining the one where the ruler of
the ascendant is placed, the missing thing is not in the
owner's house or domicile, but is in his vicinity or town.
102 HORARY ASTROLOGY
If the Moon is in a different quarter than the ruler of
the ascendant, the missing thing is far away.
Questions of Theft
In questions of theft it is many times desirable to
know who the thief may be, It is a very delicate question
and the astrologer should only undertake to answer it
after due consideration of all the circumstances of the
case, because if he should indicate the wrong person he
might cause serious damage to the character of the person
suspected, as well as to himself.
The proof of theft, or of the identity of the thief, should
depend upon actual proof and not upon mere suspicion
nor upon such vague indications as might be derived
from a horary figure; nevertheless, where the querent has
suffered from theft and is desirous of knowing where to
look in order to guard his interests, it may be advisable
to enquire of Horary Astrology.
Theft varies in degree from harmless, petty pilfering
to the taking of property to an extent that may be very
serious indeed. Theft, in some characters, grows insen-
siMy into robbery and from r»bbery into murder, so that
occasionally it is very important to know who the person
of the thief may he, while at other times it is of very
little importance, if the theft be only of a petty nature
and a rare or occasional incident. .For instance, if a per-
son have his pocket picked in a crowd of people, there is
little use of enquiring who the thief may be, except as
the loser may be curious to know whether it was an
amateur or a professional who did the work, in which
case his curiosity may he easily satisfied; however, such
matters are of little importance and hardly worthy of the
time and effort involved in their investigation.
Theft, in so far as it may be due to the carelessness of
the loser, may well be made the subject of enquiry in
order that he may be more cautious in the future.
SEVENTH HOUSE QUESTIONS
Description of Thief
The 7th house and its ruler represent the identity of
the thief, If the ruler of the 7th house be Mercury or
Venus, the thief is a young person. Venus inclines to
the indication that it may be a young female. Mars
shows the thief to be of mature age, Jupiter of middle
age, and Saturn elderly. If the Sun be the significator of
the thief and be placed in the ascendant or in the 10th
house, he is young and his age increases as the Sun ap-
proaches the 4th house. If the Moon be the significator
of the thief, his age will correspond to her age.
The sex of the thief is indicated by the significator be-
ing in masculine or feminine signs. The odd signs, be-
ginning with Aries, are. masculine. Even signs, beginning
with Taurus, are feminine.
The masculine planets are Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun
and Mercury. Feminine planets are Venus and the Moon.
The personal description of the thief, as before indicat-
ed, is given by the 7th house and its ruler. Sometimes,
when the thief is a relative of the owner the relationship
is shown by the house in which the ruler of the 7th is
found.
If the significator of the thief be in the 7th house, the
thief is the wife or husband, or lover or some person who
has been suspected of being a lover, or some person with
whom the enquirer deals publicly, or one who is the
enquirer's open enemy.
If the significator of the thief bo in the 8th house, he is
a stranger, yet has probably been employed about the
house on occasion, as gardener, house-cleancr, or some
incidental matter.
If the significator of the thief (the ruler of the 7th
house) be in the 9th, it is some traveler or vagrant, or
HORARY ASTROLOGY
some pers«n employed about churches, or a person in
connection with some jailer or manager of a workhouse
or other charitable institution.
If the significator of the thief be in the 1st house, it is
one well known to the enquirer, or one who frequents his
house and is not suspected.
If the significator of the thief be in the 2nd it is one
of the enquirer's household and he is in the enquirer's
power and may cause the return of the property by com-
pounding the theft.
If the significator of the thief be in the 3rd house, it is
one of the enquirer's own kindred, or neighbors, or some
person often seen.
If the significator of the thief be in the 4th house, it is
the father or some elderly person, or one who resides in ^
the house of the enquirer or of his father, or is a laborer
or former servant.
If the significator of the thief be in the 5th house it
indicates a son or daughter, or one of the near relatives
of the enquirer's brother or sister, or near neighbor, or
one of the household of his father or someone connected
with taverns or theatres or places of amusement.
If the significator of the thief be in the 6th house it is
probably a servant or a relation of the father, as a patern-
al uncle or it may he some person in poor health.
If the significator of a thief be in an angle, he is still
in town. If the significator of the thief-be in a succedent
house he is not far off. If the significator be in a cadent
house, he is far away. It the ruler of the ascendant and
the thief's significator be together, the thief is with the
enquirer. If the significator of the thief be in the 7th
house, the thief is hidden at home and dare not be seen.
SEVENTH HOUSE QU1CSTIOXS
Indications that the Thief will be Discovered
Indications that the thief will be discovered are if the
ruler of the 7th is retrograde, or in conjunction with the
ruler of the ascendant. The Moon separating from the
ruler of the 7th and applying to conjunction of the ruler
of the 1st, or vice versa; or if the Sun or Moon be in
conjunction with the ruler of the 7th or in opposition.
The thief will be arrested if the Moon be in the 7th
applying to a square of Mars, the Sun or Mercury, or
separating from the square of Saturn or Mercury and
applying to the square of the Sun, He will he arrested
if the Moon be in the Hth house in opposition to Mars,
or in the 7th house applying" to the ruler of the Sib.
The thief will escape if his signiheator be in friendly
aspect with a bencfic planet, and if this should happen
from the 11th house he is assisted by friends In his es-
cape, and if his significator be in the 3rd or 9th house it
is by means of strangers or by attorneys that he escapes.
Value of Article Enquirer Proposes to Purchase
This covers such items as antiques, works by famous
artists, etc., or any article f«r which an artificial price is
quoted because of vogue, fashion or scarcity.
Forarticlcs comprising any kind of furniture or decor-
ation look to the Sth; or for movables, examine the 2nd
house. Malefics in these houses denote lack of value, while
benefics in those places assure satisfaction to the pur-
chaser,
For matters or objects in which fashion or vogue con-
trol the price look to the terras. Thus, the ruler of the
Sth or 2nd in terms of a malefic denote that the object is
overpriced. Likewise the knowledge, statements or sin-
cerity of the seller are doubtful if the 7th house or its
ruler be oppressed by malefics, while afflicted Mercury
lOfi HOllAltY ASTitOLOGY
or Dragon's Tail in the 7th show downright dishonesty.
The ruler of the 7th dignified shows that the seller is
well aware of the value of the object under consideration.
For movables or personal property look to the Moon as
chief indicator of the object. The Moon void of course
or in adverse aspect to the ruler of the 2nd or closely
associated with malefics warns that the purchase should
be rejected.
Contests and Competitions
This includes such fields as art, education, sporting
events or political preferment.
The ascendant indicates the candidate or challenger.
The rivals, the champion, or holder of the cup or title, is
represented by the 7Lh house. If the competilion is one
of wit, skill or courage, look to the 3rd house. For con-
tests in science, law, philosophy or religion look to the
9th house. Political success is shown by the 10th house.
Indications of success are shown by stronger or better
dignified planets in the ascendant, compared to those in
the 7th, or to have the ruler of the 7th in the 1st. Or the
Moon or ruler of the ascendant in the house involved or
applying to a strong aspect of that house's ruler.
In considering sporting events, all professional con-
tests are subject to the suspicion of deception by inside
arrangements made to gull the general public whenever
betting is the principal object of the contest. Thus, for
example, it there is no betting, there is no horse racing;
and the people who manage it are not doing so for their
health.

EIGHTH HOUSE QUESTIONS
Whether Person Enquired of be Financially Responsible
f the person of whom enquiry is made be no
blood relation of the enquired, choose the 7th
house to represent him, and the 8th house his
financial affairs.
i: The ruler of the 8th in the 8th in its own dig-
nities, indicates wealth. If while strong the ruler of the
8th is retrograde or leaving combustion, there is wealth
but it is involved in difficulties. Benefic planets or the
Part of Fortune in the 8th or the ruler of the 8th in an
angle in good aspect to the ruler of the 4th or 1st indicate
wealth. Saturn, Mars or Uranus in the 8th indicates
poverty of the person enquired about. The ruler of the
8th combust indicates that the person has little ability
to fulfill his promises. If the Dragon's Tail, or Neptune,
be in the 8th house the person inleuds fraud.
Concerning Death
If an enquirer ask as to his own death, or the death of
any other person, first consider whether it is proper to
answer the question. The astrologer should not make
predictions that put a person in fear, or in any way assist
evil or improper motives. But there may arise questions
concerning death that arc perfectly proper.
If the person enquire about himself, the ruler of the
ascendant is his own significator. If about a relative,
then the ruler of the house indicating the relative is
taken. Thus, the third house for brothers, kindred,
cousins. The 4th house for the father, the 5th for a son
or daughter, the 6th for a paternal uncle or aunt, the 7th
for any one not a blood relation; the 10th for the mother
and the 11th for a very devoted friend.
118 HORARY ASTROLOGY
Indications of approaching death are shown when
there are evil planets in the Hth^ or the ruler of the Hth
is applying to conjunction^ square or opposition of the
person's significator. If the person's significator be ex-
tremely afflicted, then death is more certain, but if not
then it may only be that the person is very near death or
is afraid of death but recovers or escapes the danger.
Separating aspects are not to he considered unless the
person enquired about be far away so that news of his
welfare might be delayed. If the question concern an
absent person, then his death is to be feared if his sig-
nificator be in the 4th or Sth of the figure, or in the 4th
or Sth counted from the house that represents him.
If the Sun or Moon be afflicted in the 4th or Sth of the
figure, or in the 4th or Sth of the person's house, it is an
argument that he is dead. The person's significator in
the 12th house square or opposition of a malefic is also
an unfavorable indication.

the planets in the 9th or its ruler.
The ruler of the ascendant or the ruler of the 2nd
strong in the 9th house, or the ruler of the 9th in the
ascendant or 2ru! house indicates compensation received
from the insurance company. The ruler of the 9th house
can be considered as representing the insurance agent or
adjuster. The character, attitude and temperament of
the insurance agent or adjuster will be indicated by the
nature of the planetary ruler of the 9th and the sign it
occupies.
Profit or Proficiency in a Science
The science will be profitable if there is a sextile or
trine aspect between the ruler of the fth and the ruler •f
the ascendant or the Moon. The ruler of the 9th strong,
or fortunate planets in the 9th, the enquirer readily gains
true knowledge; reception between the significators, it is
the more favorable.
The square and opposition between the significator of
the enquirer and the signifcatur of the science indicate
that he will not prof t in any like degree that his talents
would give expectation. A malefic aspecting the ruler
of the ascendant or the ruler of the 9th shows that the
enquirer wearies himself to no purpose and will never
attain to profciericy or profit through the science.

the ruler of the Part of Fortune are the significators of

it indicates profit through the publication. The stronger

Adverse aspects between the significator of the 10th

rivals.
Whether a Corporation
in which the Enquirer is interested will prosper
The ascendant, its ruler and the Moon represent the
enquirer. The 9th house, the planets therein and the
ruler of the sign on the cusp of the 9th house are taken
to represent the corporation. The lOth house represents
the corporation's assets or property, and the profit which
the corporation may earn.
The ruler of the 9th strong in his essential dignities
indicates that the corporation is well organized, active
and capable of earning power. Benefic planets in the
l#th, or the Moon or the Sun or the ruler of the ascendant
therein, indicate profit to the enquirer from the corpora-
tion.
The ruler of the 10th in the 2nd is favorable, and if
well aspected or strong is certain evidence of profit.
The ruler of the 9th combust, retrograde or void of
course, the corporation can have little success, and if
malefic planets be in the 9th or throw adverse aspects to
planets in the 9th, the corporation will be wrecked by
internal dissension of its directors or stockholders.

MM Whether a Person in Prison will be Released
aSSSal First determine the relation of the enquirer to
the prisoner, and choose the appropriate house and its
ruler for the prisoner's signifieators. If the prisoner be
the enquirer, choose the ascendant, its ruler, and the
Moon for his signifieators. If the prisoner be the mar-
riage partner of the enquirer, use the 7th house, and so
in like manner for other relationships. The Moon swift
in motion is favorable, and if the Moon aspect by sextile
or trine, or by square with reception planets in the 3rd

are preferably the prisoner's as counted from the house
that represents him. The ruler of the ascendant or the
ruler of the prisoner's house is to be used for judgment
similarly to the Moon.
The ruler of the ascendant in a sign whose ruler is
found in the 4th, 8th, or 12th house is unfavorable, and
still more so if the dispositing planet be a malefic, But
if the disposition be in an angle in a cardinal sign and
swift in motion it shortens the length of time of the im-
prisonment. But a retrograde disposition of the Moon
or a retrograde disposition of the prisoner's signiheator
indicates long detention.
Benefic planets in the ascendant or 12th house indicate
early discharge.

DOCTRINE OF ELECTIONS
"To everything there is a season and a time to every pur-
pose under the heaven; a time to be born and u time to
die, a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is
planted." —Ecdeslastes III-l.
Ito' k"1)1 STROLOGY is assuredly the science of time as
ifrntl concernci with human destiny, life, character
an
^ cvents' Time is an essential factor in all
IXaaJ" such matters because no man lives to himself
BipLJp alone but is ever dependent upon the universe
^ around him for the air he breathes, the food that
supports him, the water he drinks, the light that illumines
his eyes; yea, the very thoughts that pass or grow into
form in his mind.
Time is the flowing in circulatory activity of the con-
sciousness of God throughout the visible creation. Time
is life itself in action.
Therefore it is part of human intelligence to place the
individual in time with his fellows and with the environ-
ment in which be is found. Time being but one factor
in human affairs cannot of itself produce success but
given the other essential factors time becomes the last
important element that gives the perfect result.
Thus, for illustration, suppose a person in a sail boat
designs to enter a harbor, time in so far as it determines
the nature of the tides and the winds is an important
factor. The skilled navigator takes advantage of them
when possible. To be sure, a good boat and a knowledge
of navigation are also essential to go«d success. But
even the best equipment and most perfect knowledge of
seamanship often fails against adverse conditions of the
elements. While at other times inferior equipment and
knowledge succeed because the time is one when the ele-
mentary forces conspire to give favorable results.
DOCTRINE OF ELECTIONS 119
If a man choose a good time to plant and uses poor
seed or poor soil his results will be poor, and on the other
hand If he uses good seed, good soil and the wrong sea-
son he will fail to reap good results.
Therefore astrology is to be used as the last factor to
secure the perfect result when all other factors have been
properly employed. The doctrine of elections is tbat
branch of astrology which gives the rules by which one
may choose the best time to begin important undertak-
ings.
In almost all cases it is best to study the nativity of
the person or persons about to begin an undertaking and
determine first whether the radical and progressed horo-
scopes arc favorable to the enterprise. If the business
is of a public nature it is well also to study the figure at
the spring ingress, and the preceding and following
eclipses that occur. The lunar eclipse, if within a month
of the time of election, and the solar for times longer
than a month. Some eclipses indicate favorable condi-
tions and others the reverse. To have the eclipse figure
show couplings of a favorable nature with the figure of
the tirne of election is very good for success, and of
course when of a contrary nature the election time is to
be viewed with suspicion. Thus, if a benefic planet in
the eclipse figure be in a place in the zodiac that w-ould
make a conjunction, scxtiie or trine to an important sig-
niflcator in the election figure that may be considered as
a favorable coupling.
For everyday affairs the Moon is of overwhelmingly
powerful significance, and can by itself decide whether
an election time is fortunate or suitable. Thus whenever
the Moon is approaching favorable aspects to the Sun or
benefics it indicates good results for ordinary matters
begun at that time. To find these times simply look in
the aspectarian in the back of Raphael's Ephemeris where
120 HORARY ASTROLOGY
the hour of Greenwich mean lime is given for the form-
ation of each aspect. To convert the Greenwich mean
time of aspect to the standard time of the place of the
observer, subtract iive hours for Eastern Standard Time,
six hours for Valley (Central) time, seven hours for
Mountain time and eight hours for Pacific Standard
Time. That is for the United States and Canada. For
any place in the world add the difference in Standard
Time to Greenwich Time if east of T-unclon, and subtract
Standard Time from Greenwich Time if west, allowing
fifteen degrees of longitude for each hour's difference in
Standard Time. (See Reference Xo. 3.)
If it he possible to choose the time of the month as
well as the day, it is best in most cases to have the Moon
free of combustion, that is, more than seventeen degrees
from the Sun, to be increasing in light, that is in the first
or second quarter, and not be forming a square or oppo-
sition of the Sun; nor a square, opposition or conjunction
with Mars, Saturn, Uranus or Moon's south node
(Dragon's Tail) ; and finally, the Moon should not be
cadcnt in the election figure.
Whatever business or undertakings may be contem-
plated, may be associated with some one or more of the
celestial houses. Tn all cases the house so indicated and
its planetary ruler become important significators, and if
judiciously chosen may do much to favor the smooth
running and success of the enterprise. The rnalefics,
particularly Saturn and Mars, arc to be treated with
caution because in general they conduce to crystalli/.ation
and separation, and hence are often of detriment to mat-
ters of life and growth. In general let the rnalefics be
placed in the 3rd, 9th or 11th houses of the election figure
or in the 3rd, 9th or 11th houses counted from the house
that rules the undertaking unless it be a matter of travel.
By no means choose a figure that has a malefic in the
DOCTRINE OF EI.ECTTONS 121
house ruling the undertaking unless it be a matter ruled
by the malefic; as for example, Mars for engineering pro-
jects and Saturn for mining or agriculture.
The planet ruling the house of the undertaking should
be free of adverse aspects with the malcfics and ruler of
the ascendant or 10th house, and as well dignified as the
choice of time renders possible.
The belter the planetary couplings between the election
figure and the nativity of the person who is to initiate or
manage the undertaking, the more certain the success.
In most matters of election especially if the life, happi-
ness or health be involved, the 1st house is of great im-
portance, and should be free of malefics and its ruler for-
tunately placed. Retrograde planets in the 1st or the
ruler of the ascending sign retrograde are detrimental
conditions for success because tbey indicate changing of
purpose or slowness in achieving results.
Buying and Selling
When buying choose the time when the Moon is in
conjunction or good aspect with Mercury and let the
ruler of the 2tKl house be in the 1st or 2nd, or the ruler
of the 1st in the 2nd free of combustion or of approaching
adverse aspects. If Mercury, the Moon or the ruler of
the 1st be applying to conjunction or beneficial aspect of
Jupiter or Venus it is favorable for gain from the
business.
In selling to advantage let the Moon separate from
conjunction or benefic aspect of Jupiter or Venus and be
free from alTlietion of the malcfics. Buyers are more
optimistic in the increasing than in the decreasing Moon.
If the ruler of the 1st he chosen so that it is applying to
sextile, trine or conjunction to the ruler of the 7th any
matter is more easily agreed upon between the parties to
a business transaction.
1*22 HORARY ASTROLOGY
Election for Short Journey
A journey that will not take over three days to go and
return is considered short. Avoid, if possible, commenc-
ing a journey either thirty-six hours before or after the
lunation; the same with a full Moon if it be an eclipse.
Disregard of this rule will almost certainly involve un-
necessary delay or disappointment in the matter lor
which the journey is undertaken. If possible have bene-
fic planets in the 1st or 3rd, or the ruler of the 1st in the
3rd strong and fortunate; let them be free of afflicting
aspects and preferably approaching to good aspects of
the benefics.
Election for Journey by Airplane
As traveling by air is more hazardous than other means
of travel, it is well to select such a departure with more
care than for more ordinary modes of travel, and further,
since the matter of the personal safety is emphasized
such an election refers not so much to the houses of travel
as to the ascendant.
For this purpose pay some attention to the lunation
just preceding the time of beginning the journey. Luna-
tions that arc eclipses are always to be regarded with
suspicion, and especially so if malefics have been posited
in the angles or have oppressed the lunation.
Choose a day for beginning the journey when the Moon
is forming a series of beneflc aspects and on which no
strong adverse aspect is formed between the Moon and
Saturn, Mars or Uranus; and also avoid a da}' when the
Moon forms a conjunction with Neptune.
As planes travel by schedule there is usually very limit-
ed choice of hours for beginning the journey. Where
there is a choice be had, take the hour when benches
ascend or signs ruled by benches, or when the best con-
DOCTRINE OF ELECTIONS 123
ditioned planet rules the ascending sign. If possible avoid
malefics in the 8th and 4th houses,
Note: This is one of the instances in which the 4th
h»usc attribute of being the end of the matter under con-
sideration is applicable, therefore indications of violence
in this house are to be avoided.
Advertising
For choosing a propitious day to begin advertising or
for putting up notices, signs, etc., sec that the Moon be
increasing in light, sextile or trine of the Sun, or of one
or more bencfics. The best hours for this purpose are
those which bring well dignified planets, direct in motion
and free of combustion, in the 7th or 8th houses. If an
advertisement is inserted in a publication this would
apply to the time of communicating it to the publication.
16 possible choose a time when the ascending sign's ruler
will have a favorable aspect to the ruler of the 7th or to
a planet in the 7th house.
It is propitious to have the Moon applying to conjunc-
tion or in favorable aspect to the ruler of the 7th or to a
planet in the 7611. The house governing the thing to be
advertised should also be considered, as for example, the
4th fur houses or lands, the 2nd for personal possessions,
6th for small animals, also for domestic or office help.
Favorable aspects of the ruler of the 7th or a planet in the
7th to the ruler of the house governing the thing adver-
tised increases the opportunities for success in advertis-
ing.
It will generally be found tbat the public responds to
mental stimulus such as well-directed advertising when
Mercury is direct, swift in motion and free of the Sun's
beams.
In case there are a number of replies to an advertise-
ment the most advantageous to accept may be determined
124 HORARY ASTROLOGY
by erecting a horary figure for the time of receiving each
promising response,
Election for Holding an Auction
The same principles apply as have been mentioned for
advertising. The increasing Aloon trine of Sun and con-
junction or in favorable aspect of bencfic planets is favor-
able, the trine being preferable to the sextile as the Moon
then has greater light. As the buyer is always represent-
ed by the 1st house, the hours when benefics ascend or
rule the ascending sign tend to make buyers more gener-
ous or optimistic. Avoid days when the Moon forms a
series of adverse aspects. Days when the Moon joins or
opposes the Sun arc to be avoided, especially if either of
the Moon's nodes be near the luminaries. Hours when
the Moon forms an aspect to Jupiter, even if it bo a
square or the opposition, arc favorable, because any as-
pect to Jupiter increases the optimism of the buyer. On
the other hand, when the Moon forms strong aspects of
Saturn, especially the conjunction or opposition, buyers
are slow to act, and are apt to be unduly conservative.
Election for Buying at Auction
The buyer should beware Moon square or opposing
Jupiter, as it tends to poor but optimistic judgment pos-
sibly leading to the acquisition of unnecessary purchase,
to be regretted in the cold light of reason. Transiting
Moon in good aspect to the ephemeral position of the
ruler of the natal house governing the items being pur-
chased is favorable for buying.
Building Houses
Begin the work when the ascendant is occupied by
benches, or its ruler strong, as well as the Moon and its
dispositor. None of the significators should be afflicted
by Mars. The work will progress faster if the significa-
DOCTRINE OF ELECTIONS 125
tors be above the horizon. Avoid having either Saturn
or Mars in the 4th house. If the ruler of the 1st be ap-
plying to favorable aspect of the cusp of the 4th house it
will assist the success of the work.
Buying of Lands or Houses
When buying houses or lands, sign agreements, con-
tracts or covenants when the ruler of the ascendant or
Moon is forming favorable aspects to the ruler of the 4th
house or to the planets in the 4th. Avoid having raalefics
in the 4th or 10th house. If possible have the ruler of
the 7th outside of his exaltation. Mercury should not be
in conjunction with Mars, Neptune or Dragon's Tail.
Choosing a Time for Amusement, Diversion or Pleasure
Let the Moon be applying to favorable aspect of the
Sun, Venus or Jupiter. Let benefic planets he in the 5th
or the ruler of the 1st in the 5th forming good aspects to
Venus, Sun or Jupiter. Do not elect a time when the
ruler of the Ist and 5th or Moon is applying to conjunc-
tion, square or opposition of the malcfics.
The 5th house also applies to sending messengers,
courtship, gambling, initiating or managing theatrical en-
tertainments ; in all of which matters the above rules
hold good.
Choosing a Time for a Vacation
Let the elector decide first what he most desires to
obtain from a vacation. If it be peace and relaxation pay
attention to Jupiter and Neptune, also to the 12lh house
of the election for departure. Good aspects from the
ruler of his natal ascendant or from the dispositor of his
natal Moon to Jupiter or to Neptune indicate favorable
conditions for peace and relaxation. If he desire pleasure,
sport, enjoyment, stimulation of energy, pay attention to
the places in his natal horoscope of Sun and Venus, also
IIOIiAllY ASTKOIX>GY
Mercury if if is well dignified in the natal chart; also
choose a time for departure having a well fortihed 5th
house. If possible sec that the ruler of his natal ascend-
ant or the dispositor of natal Sun be forming favorable
aspects to benches or at least be free of violent aspects,
such as conjunction, square or opposition of Mars, Saturn
or Uranus. If the vacation is for improvement of health,
pay attention to the ruler of the ascendant or enquirer's
ruling planet. Favorable aspects to his natal Sun or
ruler of ascendant give increase of vitality; favorable
aspects to his natal Moon help to restore normality of
glandular functions. The most important planet for re-
storing health and building up reserve power is Jupiter,
Venus comes next, but her transits are so rapid that they
seldom accomplish any very noticeable change. In the
election for departure secure a fortunate ascendant and
let the 6th house be clear of impediments. For broaden-
ing the intellectual horizon, refer to the 5th house, and
see that favorable conditions exist between it and the
first. The 9th house is not chosen in this case as any
intellectual improvement involving the 9th house would
be too serious to constitute a vacation. For romance, or
improving the social or business standing refer to the 7th
house and see that favorable conditions exist between it
and the first and their rulers.
As in all other matters, the beginning of a vacation
foreshadows the whole course and consequences. So it is
important to perform some act that irrevocably marks
its beginning at a time that will indicate the result de-
sired—some act such as boarding a tram or vehicle or
setting out in one's car for the place where the vacation
is to be enjoyed. Let the vacationist be certain not to
forget anything that will necessitate a return and so
spoil the signature of the chosen start.
DOCTRINE OF ELECTIONS 127
Electing Time for Surgical Operations
Whenever the case will admit of delay choose the time
when the Moon is increasing in light and applying to the
sextile or trine of Venus or Jupiter and free of any aspect
of Mars. In the progressed chart the Sun and Moon
should be free of malefic directions.
On the day of the operation the Moon should not be in
the sign representing the part of the body operated upon.
Avoid those days when the Moon is within seventeen
degrees of conjunction of the Sun or closely applying to
square or opposition of the Sun or adverse aspects of any
of the malefics. Let the ruler of the 1st be strong and
well aspected.
Election for Marriage
To secure harmony in marriage let the rulers of the 1st
and 7th be in friendly aspect. Let benefics be in the 1st,
7th or 11th houses and be careful to choose such a time
as will not place the malefics in the 7th or 11th houses.
Let Venus and the Moon be free of adverse aspects, and
preferably have the Sun and Moon in sextile or trine as-
pect. In the progressed horoscopes the Moon of the man
should be applying to benefic directions, and the Sun of
the woman should be applying to benefic directions.
Elections for Legal Advice
When seeking legal advice which may be the prelude
to suits at law or important legal moves, choose a time
when the 9th house is well tenanted by strong and well
aspected planets. The ruler of the 1st well placed, not
retrograde, cadent or combust and well configvired to the
cusp of the 9th or the ruler of the 9th or a planet in the
9th. Mercury should not be joined to Mars, Saturn,
Neptune or the Dragon's Tail. Let the election signifi-
cator be applying to favorable aspects with Jupiter or
128 HOIlAltY ASTROLOGY
the Sun. Good advice properly heeded may save much
loss and grief.
Elections for Long Journeys
In this case the 7th house represents the place to which
the elector will journey. Therefore it is important that
the 7th house be fortunate.
The fth house represents the condition involved in
traveling to the place. Therefore see that the 1st, 9th
and 7th houses be fortunate and free of affliction by
malcfics or planets adversely aspected by malcfics. Have
the Moon applying to good aspects and free of combus-
tion. Be careful that the Moon never transits the place
of a malefic in the natal chart, on the day of beginning
a long journey.
Elections for Seeking Employment
Those times are most favorable for the elector when
the ruler of the 1st is in the 10th, or the ruler of the 10th
in the 1st, or the ruler of the 1st applies to favorable
aspect of the Sun, or the ruler of the 10th; or the Moon
is applying to favorable aspect of the ruler of the 10th
or the Sun, and more so if the Moon be separating from
the ruler of the lat and applying the ruler of the 10th
or the Sun.
If employment is sought in any particular business,
then the planet that rules that business is to be consider-
ed co-significator with the ruler of the 10th; and the
ruler of the elector's ascendant must also be taken as co-
significator with the ruler of the 1st in the election.
Do not choose a time when the ruler of the 1st or 10th
is retrograde, combust or heavily afflicted in any way,
and it is a poor time to seek employment when the Moon
is void of course; that is, does not form any aspects In
passing from her location to the limits of the sign in
which she is placed.
PLANETARY HOURS 129
PLANETARY HOURS
ANY tira^s when the time which is available for
the undertaking of any matter is limited in such
a way that the Moon is not forming any impor-
tant aspects, the elector may still make use of
certain astrological principles represented by
IS planetary hours. Tables exist for that purpose.
(See Reference No. 4.)
The principle of planetary hours is that time is natur-
ally divided by human consciousness into periods which
are sympathetic with the nature of the planets. Thus,
the. days of the week are named from the planetary hour
of the time of the rising *5 the Sun on the day of the
week, the first hour of the day, or Sunrise hour, giving
the name of the planet that rules that day. The plane-
tary hours comprise twelve equal divisions of the day
and twelve equal divisions of the night; day being count-
ed from sunrise to sunset; and night from sunset to sun-
rise. Therefore, a planetary hour is not equal in length
of time to an hour of mean time, but may be longer or
shorter. For this reason the student is referred to tables,
as mentioned above.
Sunday is the day of the Sun, and the Sun rules the
first hour after sunrise. The order of the planetary hours,
starting from the Sun, is: Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon,
Saturn, Jupiter, Mars. (See Reference No. 5.)
Monday is the day of the Moon, and the first hour (or
sunrise hour) is ruled by the Moon.
Tuesday is ruled by Mars, and the sunrise hour is
ruled by Mars.
Wednesday is ruled by Mercury, and the sunrise hour
is ruled by Mercury.
Thursday is ruled hy Jupiter, and the sunrise hour is
ruled by Jupiter.
130 HORARY ASTROLOGY
Friday is ruled by Venus, and the sunrise hour is ruled
by Venus.
Saturday is ruled by Saturn, and the sunrise hour is
ruled by Saturn.
The eighth hour of any day repeats the sunrise hour as
to mlership of the hour.
The Hour of the Sun. is good in dealing with matters of
health; to seek advice of your physician or to form plans
for your own best way of living. It is a good hour to
deal with men in authority or power, such as governors,
judges, managers, trustees, civic authorities. It is a poor
hour to seek to change anybody's opinion, or to change
their course action by advice, as most people at that
time will feel more positive and determined than usual,
and more confident of their own opinions and ability.
The Hour of the Moon: If the matter of election refer
to some matter in which the Moon is the dominant planet,
the Moon's Hour is favorable for the initiating of the
enterprise or the beginning of the work. For instance,
ordinary business or domestic affairs, housekeeping mat-
ters, matters relating to water or fluids, or matters relat-
ing to removals, or changes, or temporary matters are
well suited to be treated in the Moon's hour.
The Hour of Mars: The hour of Mars is a good time
to handle anything that is difficult and requires resolu-
tion and energy to bring to success. It is a good hour
to deal with engineers, contractors, machinists, smiths,
hardware dealers. It has to do generally with mechanical
force. It is not a good hour to seek favors, nor to com-
pose differences, nor to meet one with whom you have a
disagreement.
The Hour of Mercury: The Mercury hour is good for
study, travel and business and for dealing with Mercurial
people. It is a good hour if you are planning a tri^, or
PLANETARY HOURS 131
starting on a short journey, or seeking information in
regard to journeys or travel, or information of any sort.
Avoid this hour when the mind is worried or undecided,
or you feel nervous or restless, because in such an hour
these things are stimulated.
The Hour of Jupiter: Jupiter's hour is favorable for
dealing with legal, religious or charitable matters. It is
generally a good hour to commence new undertakings of
any kind. It is a good hour to seek counsel or to conduct
matters associated with judges, lawyers or bankers,
physicians, insurance men, sportsmen or owners of fine
animals; attend to matters connected with education,
science, law or medicine at this time. Make efforts for
health and higher learning. This hour conduces to clear,
sound, correct judgment. It stimulates the sense of jus-
tice, h#nesty, benevolence, morality, compassion, sym-
pathy, friendliness and sociability. With one whose
radical Jupiter in his natal chart, is heavily afflicted, this
hour may not give good results. The weakness or vice
of Jupiter is hypocricy, which is not the weakness of the
planet itself, but of its human representatives.
The Hour of Saturn: This is a good hour to finish any
matter that has been hanging on, or has been left uncom-
pleted. It is a good hour to practice concentration, to
study organization and strategy, or any matter of pro-
found philosophical or scientific nature. In business
matters, Saturn's hour is favorable for plumbers, miners,
masons, excavators, agriculturalists, land dealers. It is
the hour favorable for excavating, repairing or dealing
with matters of property; the decision of plans for leas-
ing, tearing down or building. It is an hour to resist the
feeling of depression, loneliness or gloom that may come
from the Saturnine influence. If the elector be of a
gloomy or nervous temperament, avoid the Saturnine
hour, except in so far as it be for purposes of self im-
provement rather than self criticism.

HORARY QUESTIONS
134 HORARY ASTROROGT
REMOVAL
(Chart No, I)
Woman asks if she should move from her domicile
in order to avoid being called as a witness in divorce
proceedings of her landlord and his wife.
Analysis of Horary Figure
S1 ' | N this question the 1st house, the planet Nep
tune therein, the Sun ruler of sign Leo, and the
Moon are all significators of the enquirer.
Neptune in the 1st house, retrograde, indicates
that the enquirer is sensitive and Imaginative
and over anxious in regard to future events. Being re-
trograde shows that she is unwilling to be mixed up in
the turmoil of a legal fight. Neptune always inspires
towards peace and the person that is represented by Nep-
tune will sell his soul for peace.
The Moon in the 9th house indicates that the enquirer
is concerned ataout legal matters; being close to Uranus
is indicative of divorce among other possible meanings.
But as the Moon separates from Uranus, goes first to the
sextile of Jupiter in the 10th, indicative of the enquirer's
honor and reputation, I thought it certain that the en-
quirer's honor or reputation was to be protected. The
Moon thence going to the trine of Mars, the representa-
tive of her domicile, showed that where the enquirer lived
would bring her no adverse conditions; thence the Moon
translated the light of Mars, the representative of her
domicile to the Sun, the significator of herself.
The Moon separating from an infortune and applying
to favorable aspects throughout the rest of the sign in
which she moved strongly indicates that the enquirer
need fear no disagreeable consequences in staying where
EXAMPLE CHARTS 135
136 HORARY ASTROIX)GY
she was then living. Again taking the Sun as the signifi-
cator of the enquirer, it shows that whatever of difficulty
existed was decreasing because of its separation from the
opposition of Jupiter in the 10th. Had the Sun been
applying to this opposition instead of separating, it would
have indicated that the enquirer might have been called
as a witness, though even then she would have suffered
no evil because Jupiter being a benefic planet, and "dis-
posing of the Sun," would have caused the legal process
to have protected the honor and dignity of the enquirer.
All the significators of the enquirer agree in indicating
that whatever of difficulty, inconvenience •r worry the
enquirer has suffered is unfounded, because the worst has
already happened and all elements of the situation con-
spire to free her £r*m further participation in the troubles
of her environment.
Neptune being retrograde applies to the trine aspect of
Saturn and separates from the square of Jupiter and
Venus. This indicates that what has worried the enpuirer
is either past or in process of mending.
In this question all the significators agree in predicting
that the enquirer's fears and worries are to be discounted
and abandoned as unnecessary.

HORSE RACE
(Chart No. 2)
Will a certain horse win a race at a certain time?
•
Fy-l TT.E person asking this question did not own the
Ijanwl horse nor expect to bet on the horse, but was
IWlijWi merely testing the judgment, therefore the ques-
I ^on not
excluded.
»^I In this ease Scorpio is rising with the symbol
of the Dragon's Tail in the 1st house. This Jescrihes
the personality of the one asking the question. The
Dragon's Tail therein shows one fearful of losing and
not disposed to take the hazard involved in betting.
If the enquirer had been the owner of the horse, the
I2th house and its ruler would have been taken for a sig-
nificator, but in this case the 5th house is the one to be
chosen as it governs sports and pastimes.
The ruler of the 5th house is Jupiter, which is situated
in the 8th house separating from a square aspect of Nep-
tune, which also has dignities in the sign Pisces, ruling
the 5th house. The Moon can be taken to represent the
horse in question. The Moon being caderu does not in-
dicate success for the horse, it would rather indicate that
he was not disposed to do his best at the time of running,
or was not allowed to do so, or was outclassed.
Mars being the ruler of the sign in which the Moon
is placed, can be taken to be the jockey who rode the
horse. Mars is in conjunction with Mercury and this is
always a symbol of deception or trickery, an unfavorable
indication for one betting upon the horse.
Jupiter, the ruler of the 5th house, in the 8th is un-
favorable and would bar the idea that the person asking
138 HORARY ASTROLOGY

the question could gain by betting. Venus in the 5th
house is a favorable omen by itself, more so as it is in
its exaltation in Pisces, but it bears no favorable relation-
ship to either the ruler of the ascendant or the ruler of the
2nd h«use nor the ruler of the 10th; in fact, being only
seven degrees from the Sun, Venus is combust, indicating
that the enquirer would only lose by being connected
with the matter enquired about.
The results of the race confirmed the judgment given
by the figure—the horse did not even make third place.

SHOULD A FUGITIVE BE HEARD FROM ?
(Chart Ko. 3)
fjj HE question concerns the disappearance of a man
i accused of embezzlement who had been released
from jail by friends putting up bond for his
appearance at Court. A telephone message came
to one of his bondsmen that he had recently
disappeared and no one knew his whereabouts.
Thereupon the artist erected the accompanying figure :
The ascendant is taken to represent the man who has
disappeared and the Moon being ruler of the ascending
sign, is taken to represent his condition at the time of
the question. The Moon is found to be in the 4th house
and separating from an opposition to Uranus and a
square of Mars. These relate to what had happened to
the man just prior to the time of the question. They are
strong indications of his death or his flight because of
fear of imprisonment. It was known that he had secret
enemies as he had been employed in the intelligence de-
partment of the government. He also had recently deeply
offended certain powerful persons who could be well
suspected of being pleased at his death or disappearance.
The important thing desired to be known was would the
man be heard from or would he return voluntarily before
his bondsmen would be called upon to forfeit the bail
which they had deposited in his behalf. The significator
of the man in question being, as before mentioned, in the
4th house and heavily afflicted by malefics, is strong in-
dication that he could not he relied upon to return in
time to save his bondsmen from forfeiting the hail money.
The bondsmen are represented by the 11th house, Jupiter
therein indicates that they will not suffer loss from his
disappearance. This proved to be the case, because it
followed that the Crand Jury later brought in no indict-
ment against the man and the case was dismissed.

There is strong evrdence that the man was assassinated

MARRIAGE
(Chart No, 4)
A man asks if he will marry the one intended,
•
a*"""! N this case, a man of about thirty-seven years of
age, was engaged to marry a young lady in her
early twenties of good family and social position.
There had been diflficuities between them and
the man became desirous to know the outcome
of the affair. The man's profession was
medicine.
In the horary figure, Sagittarius rising describes the
man; Jupiter as ruler of the 1st house is his significator,
the Moon is his co-significator, as also Saturn because he
is found in the 1st house,
Jupiter in the 5th house is favorable for marriage, as
also the Moon in the 7th. The Moon going to a con-
junction of Mercury, he being ruler of the 7th, is very
favorable for marriage. The difficulty is that before the
Moon can join Mercury, the latter will form a perfect
opposition of Saturn, which falls under the rule of inter-
ference, Indicating that something shall come between
the parties before they are joined in marriage. Therefore
it was judged that the affair would be ended by a quarrel
or disagreement before the wedding should take place.
This view of the matter is further corroborated by the
fact that Saturn is retrograde in the 1st house, indicating
that the enquirer would change his mind and no longer
care to complete the matter, A careful calculation shows
that the Moon arrives at the conjunction of Mercury two
hours later than the time at which it completes its oppo-
sition with Saturn, As Saturn rules the enquirer's 2nd
house, and the Moon the lady's house of money, it is very

probable that the difficulty arose over money matters.
The man would natural!}' be thrifty, careful and savings
because Saturn represents his money affairs, and the lady
would be free in spending and possibly be inclined to
include her family in her expenditures, or at least spend
a great deal for social purposes.
As the 4th house is tenanted by malefics, it indicates
that the parents of one of the parties (in this case the
lady's parents) were opposed to the match. The Dragon's
Tail on the ascendant was also evidence that the enquirer
would suffer loss or disappointment; probably it added
some portion to his lack of discernment or tact in dealing
with the matter. The relative age of the two parties is
indicated by the fact that the planetary significators of
the man represent one of full maturity, and the planetary
signilicator of the lady represents lively youth.
As the matter turned out later, there was a disagree-
ment and the match was permanently broken off.

being that he has met with foul play, the other that he
did not wish to return and hence concealed his identity
and disappeared. An examination of the figure does not
positively decide which of these tw^o hypotheses is cor-
rect, but it does tell that which the wife is most concerned
about, that is, whether he shall soon be heard from, for
the figure is quite positive in its indications that he will
not soon be heard from nor the mystery of his disappear-
ance cleared up.
Examining the figure then, we find the Moon, ruler of
the 1st house, in the 8th house, the house of death. The
Moon is the significator of the woman asking the ques-
tion. In the 8(h house it indicates that she is thinking
about death, or matters concerning death, or matters con-
cerning the money of her husband; the 8th house having
both of these possible significations. It is, moreover, an
unfavorable indication as far as the life of the husband is
concerned.
EXAMPLE CHARTS 147
148 HORAKY ASTROLOGY
The planet ruling the 7th house is Saturn, which indi-
cates the character and disposition of the husband. Sat-
urn is self-centered, docs not tell his own plans and is
quite selfish, and this, in fact, was the husband's attitude
towards his wife. He did not confide in her any of his
business or any of his real purposes.
Saturn is strong in the sign Capricorn, and this is the
most favorable indication that he may still be alive;
moreover Saturn is retrograde, so if he is alive, the figure
positively says that he will return at some time, but being
in a cadent house it is impossible to foretell the time, and
it may be a very long time indeed.
The indications, however, that he may be dead are
these: Uranus is the ruler of the sign Aquarius which is
on the cusp of the 8th house, and Uranus has lately been
in square aspect to Saturn, and moreover the malefic
power of Uranus is much increased by his being in con-
junction with Mars, so that this square has an unusually
evil significance. Moreover, this square became exact
since the time of his disappearance and the asking of the
question. The man disappeared December 31, 1929 and
this question was asked May 19, 1930. The Ephcmeris
for 1930 shows that Saturn came in exact square to
Uranus February 23, 1930, and this, more than likely, is
the time at which the husband may have met his death,
if he has indeed been killed, or died. It is not improbable
that he has been assassinated, because Mars with Uranus
in square to Saturn would indicate such a possibility. The
square of Saturn and Mars occurred May 10, 1930. This
also was a dangerous period for the husband, if he were
still alive at that time.
There is one other possible interpretation of this
square which is this: That the husband's financial affairs
were not in good condition, and that worry or distress
about them caused him to take this manner of settling
EXAMPLE CHARTS 149
the difficulty, that is, to disappear without letting- others
know his whereabouts.
The 10th house stands for honor, and an affliction to
the husband's honor would be indicated in this way.
There are two testimonies then, against the husband's
death: One is that the luminaries are not afflicted, and
the other is that the husband's significator is strong by
sign. If either one of these testimonies were lacking, the
figure would be unequivocal.
The reason for an equivocal figure is there are karmic
conditions in the wife's life which make it impossible to
have her doubts properly resolved at the present time.
For this reason then, the figure is not decisive, and is
given in this place as an example of an indecisive figure
which cannot be read entirely to the satisfaction of the
enquirer, although the important thing to know in her
case is whether to expect that the husband's disappear-
ance will be explained satisfactorily, and the figure shows
it will not. One other testimony of this last statement is
this, that the Moon has extreme south latitude, which is
an indication that the matter enquired about cannot be
resolved, that the husband's whereabouts cannot be
discovered.

INDEMNITY FOR ACCIDENT
Ninth House Question
(Chart No. 6)
N this case a man driving his own car with due
caution was run down by a truck. His arm and
three ribs were broken. The arm suffered a
compound fracture at the elbow so that the sur-
geon estimated it would be a year before full
recovery, and that the arm would remain stiff
at the elbow for life. The man thought himself entitled
to full hospital and surgeon's charges, full payment for
damaged car, full payment for loss of time from business
for one year, expenses for hiring chauffeur while attend-
ing to business and five thousand dollars for permanently
injured arm. It was admitted that the accident was the
fault of the truck driver and the truck owner carried
accident insurance against damage by his employee.
In view of the reading of the figure the man was ad-
vised to drop all doubtful claims and only stand for those
usually allowed in similar cases to his own. In view of
the difficulty of deciding such matters he was strongly
advised to seek counsel of a good attorney and decide for
himself after taking into review all the advice which this
figure gave him.
The sign Leo ascending, Neptune in the 1st house, the
Sun ruler of the ascendant and Moon are all significators
of the enquirer. The 9th house represents the insurance
company. The planet Neptune in the 1st house, retro-
grade, indicates that the querent was over-anxious, wor-
ried and imaginative. His imagination would conjure up
difficulties that did not exist ani generate doubts that
had no reasonable support. Also there would be a ten-
dency^ to imagine himself worthy or deserving of greater
EXAMPLE CIIA11TS 151

indemnity than would be collected. His chief ruler, the
Sun, is with the benefic planet, Venus, angular in the
7th house, is swift in motion in Aquarius and in close
trine to the Moon in the llth.
These are all testimonies that he is protected in his
right and will receive any proper indemnity due him. The
fact that Venus is the ruler of the 10th house makes her
conjunction with Sun, ruler of the 1st, strongly indicative
of payments from the insurance company. Moreover the
Moon translates the light from the Sun to Venus.
That the man would not receive all that he claimed is
to be inferred, because Uranus in the 9th house is ap-
proaching a square to Saturn in the 5th, which was in
turn trine to Xeptune in the 1st hotisc. The man's too
lively imagination had conjured up a series of claims that
would be adversely criticized or resisted by the insurance
adjuster.
Again the same indication is repeated by the square of
Jupiter to Neptune, which warns that the unfounded
claims would fare ill if taken into a court of law ; the con-
dition of Jupiter in the iOth indicating the way the man's
interest would be treated in court.
This figure proclaims that this enquirer be not Over-
anxious; that he simply stand upon his rights and pursue
the business with ordinary diligence and prudence; that
he would receive all that was customarily paid in acci-
dents of the same nature, and to people in his own class
or condition.

FORECAST OF STOCK MARKET
(Chart No. 7)
Will price of a certain stock advance to a given
figure by May 1, 1930?
iga ^ ^.,11 MAN owning oil refining stock quoted at 37-5/8
on the 14th of March, 1930, asks if the price
would advance to 60 by May 1. 1930. The reason
I ^or as'<'nl? this question was that the enquirer
ffihjpff had certain obligations coming duo at that time
^ ^ which ho hoped to meet by selling the stock in
question, but he felt disinclined to depend upon selling
the stock unless be could make a profit over what it had
cost him. Therefore he set the definite price of 60 for
that purpose. This question therefore was not a question
of gambling or speculation, but rather a question of alter-
native business arrangement.
In the figure the ascendant is taken to represent the
enquirer and the Moon his significator. l.eo is the ruling
sign of the 2nd house, therefore the Sun is the significator
of the querent's money or any benefit to be derived from
the business inquired about. The 9th house represents
the company in which the stock participates. The 10th
house would represent proceeds to be derived from the
oil refining company on the stock which the enquirer
holds. The Sun, being the significator of the 2nd house
and the enquirer's money, is cadcnt because it is falling
away from the angle of the lOth house which has 26 de-
grees of Pisces on the cusp. While not far cadcnt it
shows that the enquirer's money affairs are not improved
but on the contrary, grow worse. This is an unfavorable
indication. Ve.nus in the 10th house is a good indication
but she is moving to a conjunction of Uranus and square
154 HORARY ASTROLOGY
26
EXAMPLE CHARTS 155
to Saturn and this is an unfavorable indication. While,
Mercury in the 9th house is forming a sextile to Saturn
and a square to Jupiter, Mars in the 9th house is void of
course and, as before noted, the Sun is cadent, falling
away from the meridinal angle and is approaching an
opposition of the Moon.
This last testimony refers probably to some news
which will be depressing in the market, while the other
conditions are not unfavorable to the eventual success of
the company, and to the rise of value of the stock, yet
they all point to slow improvement rather than a rapid
change, and hence are unfavorable to the enquirer's de-
sire to have the stock come to 60 by May 1.
Considering all the testimony offered by the figure, the
majority of testimony indicates that the enquirer's ques-
tion must be answered in the negative.
Such proved to be the case, the quotation being far
below 60 on the 1st of May.

CONCERNING OUTCOME OF LEGAL ACTION

31
v ! The judgment given by astrology was that
the Court would declare the law constitutional, and this
because the horary figure showed the enquirer t* be
weaker than his adversaries and the Judge to be inclined
against him.
About two months after the question wTas given for
judgment the Court rendered a decision that the law in
the case was constitutional and hence the horary figure
did correctly foretell the result.
As this case was not simply a personal quarrel between
bumptious litigants, but involved a very deep and funda-
mental principle of law and government, it is necessary
t» give more than the bare outline above written in order
t» more fully understand the astrological figure and the
interpretation.
The state government of California had recently passed
a law restricting the waste of natural gas coming from
oil wells, This was thought a matter of public policy for
the real benefit of the whole community, nevertheless cer-
tain operators held t* the old fashioned theory that prop-
EXAMPLE CHARTS 157
158 HORARY ASTROLOGY
crty right was inviolable by the legislature; and if a
person held legal title to a portion of land he could waste
its resources if he saw fit.
Our enquirer, therefore, was of this latter party that
opposed the new law, and he with others of like mind and
interest attacked the validity of the new conservation law
in the Courts, Behind the law, and supporting it, were
other industrial interests that were large enough to obey
the law with profit to themselves; and it would be to
their advantage to suppress the oil producing activities
of the irresponsibles and economically limited people who
would not be able to commercially market or utilize the
natural gas produced by their wells,.
It was therefore in the last instance a fight between
large operators and small operators. The small operators
standing against the constitutionality of the new law and
the large operators upholding the law's validity. In the
horary figure, the sign Cancer on the ascendant repre-
sents the party attacking the validity of the conservation
law. The Moon as ruler of the ascendant also represents
their condition, resources and state of mind. The 7th
house, with Capricorn on the descendant, in which is
located Saturn, the ruler, and Mercury, represents the
adverse party that is fighting to uphold the validity of
the law.
These signs and significators very well represent the
character, resources and condition of the party involved.
Cancer represents small minded people of common or
mediocre ideas, with little thought dcy«nd their own
circle of influence, Capricorn represents large interests,
great comWinations, and people of world wide ambition
who look far ahead and plan to rule or manage the affairs
of the world. As Saturn is in the sign of his rulership,
and angular, being in the house of the adversaries, it in-
dicates that that party is exceedingly powerful. The
EXAMPLE CHARTS 359
enquirer, represented by the Moon, •which has only the
minor dignity of triplicity in Virgo, is debilitated by be-
ing in the 3rd house, which is a cadent position. This
gives overwhelming evidence that the enquirer's suit will
fail.
As the sign Pisces is on the cusp of the 10th house, its
ruler Jupiter, is the significator of the judge. Jupiter be-
ing in a cadent house and out of his dignities, indicates
that the Judge has not the power to settle the dispute at
issue. His decision will not settle the case, for the mat-
ter will be appealed to a higher Court, or new issues
introduced.
Such proved to be true, for no sooner did the Court
declare the law constitutional, than an injunction was
brought against the Court from enforcing the law till
other issues could be tried and the constitutionality of
the law referred to the Supreme Court.
As the planet Uranus, ruler of the 8th house, is in the
10th, in sextile to Jupiter, it indicates that the money or
finances of the adverse party will be assisted by the de-
cision of the Judge.
The 9th house with Aquarius on the cusp, and Venus
and the Sun therein, indicates the nature of the law in-
volved and shows it to be well conceived, reasonable, and
of broad, humane principles; not meant to favor any
special interest or class.
The square of the planet Uranus in the 10th to Saturn
in the 7th indicates that the decision, in the end, will not
be to the monetary advantage of the adverse parties, but
will eventually cause them much loss and grief.

EMPLOYMENT
(Chart No. 9)
Highly skilled certified accountant out of employ-
ment asks if he may secure a suitable place or if he
should invest in a farm,
B5" """I K this question the man had fears that his a
would debar him from securing a position that
would be equal to his merits. He had also lately
had opportunity to invest in some kind of tarm-
| ing enterprise which had been highly extolled
to him and had captured his imagination.
The horary figure answers at once both questions in a
highly decisive and satisfactory manner.
The ascendant having Libra rising and Moon in Libra,
represents the enquirer. The Dt agon's Tail in Scorpio
is also in the 1st house. As Cancer is on the Midheaven,
the Moon is also ruler of the lith house. To have the
ruler of the 10th house in the 1st is an indication of suc-
cess in securing employment suitable to his place ani
condition.
While the Moon in Libra has no essential dignity, yet
it is in a friendly sign because Venus is the ruler of 1 -ibra,
and the Moon and Venus are friendly planets. The Moon
is applying to a trine of Jupiter in the 9th house, This
indicates that there will very shortly be an opportunity
to enter employment in some corporation dealing with
large financial matters, perhaps of a speculative or invest-
ment nature.
The ruler of the 1st house being Venus, and found in
the 9th in reception of the Moon, the two planets being
in each other's signs, indicates that in this corporation.

if he should take employment, he would find very benefi-
cial and happy conditions for himself, giving contentment
and prosperity.
That the Moon has no greater dignities in Libra, in-
dicates that the man is practically alone in the world, so
far as regards social, family or other sort of support or
protection, He was, as a fact, far from his native land
and had no family that could be of any assistance to him.
The Dragon's Tail in the 1st house indicates that the
man was subject to worries and fears that were not im-
portant, but nevertheless caused him considerable dis-
turbance.
His ruler being in the 9th house, a cadent house, indi-
cates a tendency on his part to delay or let pass important
opportunities; therefore he was strongly advised to take
the first good opportunity which presented itself and nail
it down, as it were.
Regarding Investing in a Farm
The ruler of the 4th house is Saturn, which is cadent in
the 3rd and retrograde, moreover it is square to Uranus,
•pposition to Venus and trine to Mars.
The ruler of the 4th house retrograde and cadent in-
dicates that investments in lands or buildings or anything
directly connected with the land or earth would not con-
tinue long in the enquirer's possession nor yield him pro-
fit, but rather would cause him worry and loss and waste
his substance.
The trine of Mars from the 7th to Saturn indicates that
some stranger had strongly urged upon him the advan-
tage of investing in land, and considering the other indi-
cations this advice was n«t go«d. The enquirer was
strongly advised to discount whatever advice he had been

given in the matter and to rely upon astrology in this
case, which was very overwhelmingly and decisively
against any land investment.

PROMOTION
(Chart No. 10)
A temporary employee in a department of municipal
government asks if she will receive appointment as
a permanent employee.
B"~ | N this case, the employee had been working in a
municipal department for almost one year, with-
out receiving an appointment to permanent em-
ployment. The question was asked, should she
continue working in said department or go to
some other department upon certification from
Civil Service to a permanent position.
The horary figure erected gave assurance that it was
best to remain in the department where she then was and
that she would shortly receive promotion to a permanent
position in that department.
In the figure the ascendant stands for the enquirer. Its
ruler, the Moon, is at home in the 1st house, indicating
that the Enquirer is now in the best place, the place
where she will do best. The Moon moves from a trine
of the Sun to a trine of Venus in the 9th house, Venus
being the ruler of the 4th house indicates the end of the
matter, and being a benefic indicates that it will be .satis-
factory to the enquirer. Therefore it is judged that she
will soon receive the permanent position desired in the
department where she is now employed. Uranus in the
10th house in square to Saturn in the 6th house indicates
that there has been delay or trouble in the department
that has prevented her hitherto being recognized or pro-
moted. This difficulty was in no way connected directly
with the enquirer, but was the result of internal friction
by some of the managers or senior employees. As the
KXAMPLE CHARTS 165

Moon is moving so far away from any aspect to this lat-
ter condition, it is indicated that the enquirer is no longer
affected by that condition.
About one month later the enquirer received promotion
to a permanent appointment in the department in ques-
tion, verifying the prediction made from the horary
figure.
FINAL WORD lOt
FINAL WORD
a m STROLOGY is a Divine Science and therefore
fytSpl as a last word we exhort the student who would
jt Jjjl practice any of its branches to treat astrology
with the reverence it deserves. In no branch of
<pwl&| astrology is this reverent treatment more neces-
^ *** sary than in Horary Astrology. At the very
foundation of the whole subject is the fact of the corre-
spondence and sympathy of the mind of the artist with
the Mind of the Cosm#s. Therefore it is t# be realized
that the cautions given in previous pages in regard to the
moral aspects of questions proposed for solution by
Horary Astrology are to be taken seriously and constant-
ly kept in mind while practicing the art.
There is nothing more destructive of the higher powers
•f the mind and aoul, such as prophecy, intuition, clear
seeing, and right judgment, than vanity. Let the artist
beware of allowing his judgment to be warped and his
intuition to be destroyed by the subtle vice of vanity. Let
the artist realize that he is to refrain from prying into
matters in which he has no right or interest, nor lightly
undertake to solve weighty matters beyond his capacity
or experience. It is not to be understood that experiment
or conjecture are forbidden, but in so doing the artist
should remain quietly content to watch the outcome of
his forecasts in such cases and let time prove the relia-
bility of his judgment before he advises others or pub-
lishes his conclusions to the world.
Common experience proves that knowledge is power.
Where there is power there is danger. The danger to be
avoided in the practice of astrology is the degradation of
the spiritual part of man to the blind service of his sordid
desires or instincts. The proper name for this sort of
action is superstition. Astrology is to free men from
HORARY ASTROLOGY
superstition by teaching and demonstrating the Unity of
all that is, which properly is called God. Anything less
than this tends towards superstition which is the denial
of the rulership of God. God is Spirit, Tntelligcnce, Soul
and Substance. Moreover God is personal in the sense
that the Universe includes personality, and the relation-
ship between God and man is necessarily personal in that
man can only receive or understand through his own
personality. Therefore God possesses personality but is
not limited by personality.
In practicing astrology the artist is coming into inti-
mate contact with the highest part of his own nature.
Let him see to it that the highest part of his own nature
shall be master over the lower faculties, instincts and
desires. By so doing he will advance his own regenera-
tion and assist the regeneration of all mankind.
