Passage Planning Appraisal - ECDIS

(Should involve entire Bridge team and be completed everytime a passage is being planned)
Date : _____________ Time :_________
Voyage No.:________
From : _________________________ To: _________________________
Has the following been done when preparing the passage plan? Yes/No/NA
1) consider which electronic charts will be used for the passage,
ENC or RNC data
2a) check areas where RCDS mode will be operated, identify
whether appropriate folio of paper charts (APC) are carried
b) check local requirements of coastal states that may require
carriage of additional publications or local charts
c) check that electronic charts have been updated to the most
recent version and chart permit licences have been bought
d) check that electronic charts have been updated with the latest base CD's
and latest weekly corrections.
e) route check previous passage plans after chart updating to ensure
that any new dangers added don’t present a risk to the ship
f) modifications to the passage plan may be necessary to
accommodate new chart features such as reporting schemes,
traffic separation schemes (TSS), isolated dangers, etc.
g) when planning new waypoints and courses, are the largest scale
possible is used, so all features of the chart can be readily
identified and risk assessed.
h) Check that the plan takes into account sufficient cross track error
(XTE) to accommodate any deviations for collision avoidance
or currents
i) Input adequate values are inputted for safety contour and
depth alarms
j) check the entire passage plan berth to berth on a 1:1 scale Check the chart
manually scrolling along the track. Checks to include reliability of survey data (ZOC).
k) check the entire passage plan berth to berth on a 1:1 scale
manually scrolling along the track
3) Check all T&P notices have been updated for the intended voyage.
If AIO is used, has it been updated and same displayed
4) Checked that all radio navigation warnings affecting the area have been
received.
5) Has watch schedule decided by the Master after reviewing the rest
hours of bridge watchkeepers ?
6) Checked that sailing directions and relevant lists of lights have been
corrected and up to date. If e-NP's are used confirm if licence key
is obtained for the required area
7) Estimated the draft of the ship during the various stages of the passage.
8) Studied sailing directions for advice and recommendation on route
to be taken.
9) Consulted current altas to obtain direction and rate of set.
10) Consulted tide tables and tidal atlas to obtain times, heights
direction and rate of set.

11) Studied climatological information for weather typical of that area.

11) Studied charted navigational aids and coastline characteristic for
landfall and position monitoring purposes.
12) Checked the requirements of traffic seperation and routing schemes.
13) Considered volume and flow of traffic likely to be encountered
14) Assessed the coverage of radio aids to navigation in the area and the
degree of accuracy of each.
15) Studied the manoeuvering characteristics of the ship to decide upon
safe speed and, where appropriate, allowance for turning circle at
course alteration points.
16) Made a careful study of the area at the Pilot boarding point for
pre-planning intended manoeuvres.
17) Where, appropriate, studied all available port information data.
18) Checked any additional items which may be required by the type
of ship, the particular locality, or the passage to be undertaken.
19) Parallel index points/ wheel over lines have been included in
the plan & marked in the ECDIS
20) Primary and Secondary position plotting methods and position
fixing intervals are included in the plan.
21) Abort positions for critical manouvers have been clearly marked
in the ECDIS and included in the passage plan.
21) make a back-up copy of the plan and save on a separate disk ( dedicated USB stick)
22) Does vessel have sufficent fuel, water, lubricants, chemicals, spare parts,
tools and other supplies to undertake the current voyage

PASSAGE PLAN - ECDIS

A ) Aborts and Contingencies

Even if a Passage Plan has been well planned and conducted, there may be some cases in restricted waters
when the Passage Plan will have to be abandoned due to change in circumstances (like equipment failure,
port instructions etc)

The Abort Point is a position to be marked on the charted course where the ship may abandon her passage
and be able to return (or hold position safely).

Take care when marking an abort. At the abort position, there should be sufficient sea room for the ship to
undertake any of the following maneuvers in safety:

> Turn around

> Stop in safe waters
> Anchor

Once this point is passed, the ship is committed and must continue on the passage.

Contingency Planning by the Master shall be done in advance which may include Alternative routes, Safe
anchorages, Waiting areas, Emergency berth etc., after passing the Abort Point.

B ) WHEEL OVER POSITION

C )CONSTANT RATE OF TURN
First calculate your turn radius:
Radius = (Speed / Rate of Turn) x 0.96
(e.g….)Radius = ( 20 kn / 5 degrees RoT) x 0.96= 3.84 nautical miles.

1. Construct your course line as depicted. (fig.1)

2. Draw two parallel indexes at ‘R’ distance from your course line inside the turn. (fig.2)
3. Where the two parallel indices meet, this is your datum.
4. Take a pair of Pencil Compass, and spread them to 3.84nm distance.
5. Draw the turn radius onto your course using the Pencil Compass from the datum point.
6. F = your ships length. On a 300m vessel this is around 0.16 nautical miles. From applying helm it will take roughly one
ships length for the turn to commence.

7. Your wheel over point is approximately ‘F’ distance from where

the turn radius intersects with your initial course. (fig.3)

(1) (2) (3)

CONSTANT RADIUS TURN

Distance of wheel over line from the new course line

= F sin q + R (1 – cos q) where,

F = one ship’s length (usually),

R = Radius of the turn
PASSAGE PLAN - ECDIS
WHEEL OVER POSITION:

D
Ө Course alteration

P
Ө R
F
W/O Ө

Centre

OLD COURSE

F = Head Reach – Distance traveled by vessel after giving wheel over & before commencing turn, i.e. distance to overcome
inertia.
P = Perpendicular distance from wheel over point to new course extension.
D + P = Parallel Index distance at W/O position.
D = Parallel Index distance from new course, as obtained from chart.
R = Radius of turn.
Ө = Change of course angle.

TO FIND & MARK APPROX. W/O POSITION:

F = 0.1 to 0.15 NM
P = R(1-Cos Ө) = F Sin Ө
Rate of turn = (V / R where V = speed of vessel
Distance to new course = Radius x Tan Ө/2

First the Master of the vessel has to decide the radius of turn required, depending on the manoeuvring characteristics
of the vessel & available sea room.
A reference point such as an island, buoy, etc. can be also used to decide the radius of turn.

Wheel over point = F + Distance to new course

Distance to new course can be found by the above formula.
Once the Master has decided on the radius of turn, a tabular ready reconer may be prepared for various course change angles.
