CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background Information
Welding is a very popular skill nowadays, not just in the Philippines but also abroad. But
what is the use of being in demand if the school Laboratory lack of equipment and
consumables and lack of activities to develop their skills. According to Universal Technical
Institute (2019), a shortage of equipment in shielded metal arc welding may impede
students' learning and practical experience in the area. It may limit the number of students
who may take the course or postpone the commencement of the program until the
necessary equipment is secured. The lack of equipment for shielded metal arc welding
performance jobs has become a major concern in many schools, particularly those with
catastrophic repercussions. The researchers revealed that the Baguio National School of
Arts and Trades (2020) is underperforming because of a shortage of equipment during
teaching and learning.
In Mindanao, Davao City National High School Senior High School Department
Forres (2019) noted, "The absence of suitable equipment in schools has attracted
considerable attention in recent years since it greatly impacts educational possibilities
and instructional quality." A lack of sufficient textbooks, computers, and other resources
is a widespread issue in educational institutions. This lack of resources may act as a
barrier for students, preventing them from having the same access to learning as the
other students. In addition to hindering learning, this may reduce students' eagerness and
engagement, lowering the quality of their educational experiences. Initiatives focused at
training educators on how to efficiently use limited resources can increase the impact of
existing materials while also promoting a culture of resourcefulness and creativity in
teaching techniques. Prioritizing resource allocation in education is critical for fostering
intellectual growth and future achievement in students, regardless of socioeconomic
status.
There are several common welding problems. The shortage of welding machines
and consumables is a significant issue that impedes welders' learning and practical
experience. Inadequate access to machines and consumables restricts hands-on
practice and skill development. Furthermore, the absence of welding activities
exacerbates the problem, as practical application is critical for transferring academic
knowledge to practical abilities. This lack of activity inhibits the development of expertise
and confidence in welding processes. In addition, welding flaws like porosity, fractures,
partial fusion, and excessive spatter may affect the strength of weld connections.
Insufficient penetration and deformation of the base metal due to heat input are other
common problems. Also, contamination of the weld area and the complications of welding
incompatible metals or materials with varying characteristics provide substantial problems.
Adherence to safety procedures is crucial due to the risks connected with welding, which
include high temperatures, strong light, and harmful fumes. Addressing these issues
necessitates guaranteeing enough access to welding machines and consumables,
introducing different welding activities into training programs, and encouraging competent
welders to follow good welding processes in order to maintain the structural integrity of
welded components.
The researchers aim to understand what challenges Grade 11 SMAW students
have in their welding education, particularly due to a lack of machines, consumables, and
activities. By investigating the lived experiences of these students, the researchers seek
to identify the specific challenges they face, such as inadequate hands-on practice and
the inability to apply conceptual knowledge effectively. Ultimately, the goal is to provide
insights and recommendations that will improve the learning experience and better
prepare Grade 11 SMAW students for successful careers in welding.
Grand tour question
How is Limited Availability of Welding Machines and Consumables and Lack of
Welding Activities to Develop Thier Skills Experienced by Grade 11 SMAW Students?
Scope and limitations
The researcher will conduct a qualitative study to explore the lived experiences of
Grade 11 SMAW students encountering limited availability of welding machines and
consumables and lack of activities to develop their skills. This study will involve Grade 11
SMAW students who are currently enrolled in GSCNHS (General Santos City National
High School). The researcher will conduct the study from the 3rd week of May to the 1st
week of June, this study will be conducted at General Santos City National High School.
The study aims to explore the challenges faced by Grade 11 SMAW students due to
limited availability of welding machines and consumables, as well as lack of welding
activities, by understanding their experiences, the research aims to identify the impact of
these challenges on their skill development and provide insights for educational
improvement.
This research study will focus especially on Grade 11 SMAW students who
enrolled in GSCNHS and may not include other grade levels or other specializations and
in other schools.
Benefits and beneficiaries
This study aimed to provide valuable information on how lived experiences of
grade 11 SMAW students encountering limited availability of welding machines and
consumables and lack of activities to develop their skills.
For the Grade 11 SMAW students, by addressing their challenges this research
can significantly improve their educational experience and skill development.
For the SMAW teachers, they can use the research findings to improve their
teaching methods, leading to better student outcomes.
For the School administrators, this research can guide administrators in making
improvements to the learning environment, benefiting all students in the school.
For the Parents, by understanding the challenges their children face, parents can
provide better support and advocate for their children’s needs.
For the Curriculum planners, this research can inform more effective curriculum
design, leading to long-term benefits for many students.
For the Research teachers, this finding can guide research teachers in supporting
students in conducting meaningful research
For the Future researchers, this research provides a foundation for further studies,
contributing to the overall knowledge in the field of SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding).
Definition and terms
For clarity and better understanding of the study, the following terms were
conceptual and operational defined.
Lived Experiences. Conceptually, lived experience is a depiction of a person's
experiences and decisions, as well as the knowledge gained from these experiences and
choices. It is also used when describing a type of qualitative study that includes studies
on culture and society, as well as linguistics and communication.
Operationally, this refers to the representation of the experiences and choices of
the participants, and the knowledge they gained from these experiences and choices.
Students. Conceptually, it refers to individuals registered and recognized as learners in
educational institutions like colleges and universities for the purpose of acquiring
knowledge and skills that could enhance personal developments to prepare them for the
world of work.
Operationally, this refers to the SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) who were the
participants of the study
SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding). Conceptually, also known as manual metal arc
welding, is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable and protected electrode.
As the electrode melts, a cover that protects the electrode melts and protects the weld
area from oxygen and other atmospheric gases.
Operationally, it is a welding process that uses a coated electrode to create an electric
arc, melting the electrode and forming a weld pool.
Welding Machine. Conceptually, a machine that helps to assemble or remove metal
parts by melting them with thermal energy. A welding machine is a useful tool for people
in the welding industry. It produces heat that helps dissolve the metal to give it a different
shape or combine metal with any other metal or metal.
Operationally, it is a tool used to join metal pieces together by generating
heat and providing electrical current. It consist a power source, controls for adjusting
parameters.
Specialization. Conceptually, it is an area of expertise in your field of work. Your
expertise may relate to your degree program if you completed a double major, a major
with a minor, a major with a certification or a major with a subject concentration or practical
training in an area of study.
Operationally, it is a process of focusing on a specific area of expertise, acquiring
in-depth knowledge and skills, and providing specialized services or solutions.
