CE 211 – INTRODUCTION TO STRUCTURES

ASSIGNMENT # 1 – ANSWER KEY (SOLUTIONS)

Given Date: Monday 11th March, 2024 Due Date: Friday 22nd March, 2024

Total: 35 Marks

Question 1 [Force Method of Analysis: Method of Joints] (20 Marks)

Determine the forces in the members marked 1, 2, 3, and 4 in each of the pin-jointed frame
shown below in Figure Q1 and Figure Q2 when it carries the loads shown. Use both the Method
of Joints and Sections.

Figure Q1

Solution:
i. Statically Determinacy (1 Mark)
i = (m + r) – 2j
= (13 + 3) – 2(8)
= 0 therefore, the structure is statically determinate.

ii. Using the Equilibrium Equations, find the Reactions. (2 Marks)

Week 5 - Assignment #1 – ANSWER KEY Prepared by: Ms. Grace Wantepe 1

iii. Find the Member Forces using the Method of Sections/Joints (6 Marks)

Cut at Section X-X

For F4, solve joint 1

Week 5 - Assignment #1 – ANSWER KEY Prepared by: Ms. Grace Wantepe 2

iv. Summary of Member Forces (1 Marks)

MEMBER FORCE (kN) Nature

F1 -62 Compression
F2 -6.83 Compression
F3 76 Tension
F4 0 -

Figure Q2

Solution:
i. Statically Determinacy (1 Mark)
i = (m + r) – 2j
= (14 + 4) – 2(9)
= 0 therefore, the structure is statically determinate.

ii. Using the Equilibrium Equations, find the Reactions. (2 Marks)

Overall Equilibrium
∑Fx = 0: 30 + 40 + 50 = R1 + R2
120 = R1 + R2

Week 5 - Assignment #1 – ANSWER KEY Prepared by: Ms. Grace Wantepe 3

iii. Find the Member Forces using the Method of Sections/Joints (6 Marks)

(iv) Tabulated Summary of Member Forces (1 Marks)

MEMBER FORCE (kN) Nature

F1 - 55 Compression
F2 2.63 Tension
F3 59.70 Tension
F4 - 30 Compression

Week 5 - Assignment #1 – ANSWER KEY Prepared by: Ms. Grace Wantepe 4

Question 3 [Method of Tension Coefficient] (15 Marks)

The pin-jointed space frame shown below in Figure Q3 is pinned to a supporting wall at the
points C, D and E. It carries a vertical load of 10 kN at the point A, together with a load of 20
kN acting in the horizontal plane at the angle shown. Using the method of tension
coefficients, find the forces in all the members under this loading system.

i. Applied force components (2 Marks)

x-direction: 20*cos45 = -14.142 kN

y-direction: 20*sin45 = 14.142 kN

z-direction: 10 kN

ii. Apply Equilibrium Equations at the Joints and solve the equations
simultaneously. (9 Marks)

At Joint A – Maximum 3 unknown member forces.

Equations: - Members Connected at A are: AB, AD, and AE.

∑Fx = 0: -2TAB – 4TAD - 4TAE = -14.142 kN -----------(1)

∑Fy = 0: 0TAB + TAD - TAE = 14.142 kN -----------(2)

∑Fz = 0: TAB + 0TAD + 0TAE = 10 kN -----------(3)

Week 5 - Assignment #1 – ANSWER KEY Prepared by: Ms. Grace Wantepe 6

At Joint B – Member BC, BD, BE & BA = Unknown

iii. Determine the member lengths (2 Mark)

iv. Tabulate Summary Results (2 Marks)

Member Length (m) T (kN/m) Force (kN) Sense

AB 2.236 10 22.36 Tension

AD 4.123 20.481 84.443 Tension

AE 4.123 6.339 26.136 Tension

BC 2 20 40 Tension
