What is a Safari?
What is a Safari?
An African Safari is a famous type of holiday, but for Africans this Word only
means “a trip”. Safaris started in 1850 with a few European explorers and in
1890, “safari” was added to English dictionaries, but they became well-known when
American President Theodore Roosevelt went on one in 1909.

A safari in Africa is not an expensive trip taken by celebrities or even science

teachers; anyone who is on vacation and loves being outdoors can enjoy one.
However, not all activities in Africa, like visiting museums or musical events, are
part of this experience; a holiday only becomes a safari when there is contact with
animals in the natural world.

Wild animals are everywhere, from Woods to deserts and there are huge elephants
in India and kangaroos in Ausralia-, but Kenya is the best place to enjoy a safari.
In general, people go on safaris in Southern Africa, as Northem Africa is better
known for the Sahara Desert and Central Africa for its rainforest and gorillas.
When thinking of a safari, people usually imagine a 4x4 car, but there are also walking trails; bikes or
small planes are not use.

In the past, a safari was a trip planned to catch animals; nowadays, that is only seen in old books and
magazines. Today, the money paid for these trips is used for conservation projects which have become
important to protect many species.

Anime and Manga
Anime and Manga
Anime is a Japanese video cartoon that began when Japan tried to
make movies in the Western way. To make these “Western” movies,
the money was not enough, places were difficult to film, and Japanese
actors looked different from other people in the World. So, directors
preferred cartoons and asked artists to draw villages or people not
found in other movies; for example, they started making people with
big heads, lots of hair and colorful eyes.

Most Anime movies come from comics or Manga, which means written
and drawn stories. During the 1970s, many Anime movies were based
on Manga written by Osamu Tezuka, and artist well-known for his
writings about the future, wonderful machines and amazing
adventures.
Here in the West, we believe Anime is about Japanese cartoons, but it’s actually the word they use in
Japan for any kind of video cartoon. The same happens with Manga, which in Japan refers to all comics
everywhere, but in the West means Japanese comics. Anime movies are made by special teams with the
help of computer programs, while Manga can be written and drawn by a single artist.

International companies rewrite Manga stories from Japanese into other languages and sell them.
However, some fans do this before the companies in order to share the stories online for free. So, more
people can read Manga now, but some companies say that’s a form of stealing.

Most Anime movies come from comics or Manga, which means written and drawn stories. During
the 1970s, many Anime movies were based on Manga written by Osamu Tezuka, and artist well-

of video cartoon. The same happens with Manga, which in Japan refers to all comics everywhere, but in the West means
Japanese comics. Anime movies are made by special teams with the help of computer programs, while Manga can be
written and drawn by a single artist.

International companies rewrite Manga stories from Japanese into other languages and sell them. However, some fans do

Does something about living abroad seem extraordinary to you? I understand.
That´s what inspired me to leave America for the first time and set out on
my journey to start high school in France. However, I was shocked that there
were several things I had absolutely no idea about until I landed in France
and took part in daily activities there.

Before I arrived, I had only experienced foreign exchange students coming to

America, never being one. All those students spoke other languages unknown
to me. For me, as an English speaker, that was not the case. Once in
France, most of my foreign partners spoke English. In some ways, it´s
positive that people communicate with you in your own language because it´s
convenient. The disadvantage is you never have that secret moment where
you can say things, and no one can imagine what you´re saying.
It Will feel shocking to install yourself in a new family´s house, but you can handle this. As you start
getting along with them, you can start doing things the way you like them, and it gets cozy. However,
there are some things you can´t do your usual way. It´s those Little things that separate your life in
your home country fom your life abroad.

If you´re thinking about doing this, my advice is “say yes more than you say no”. Of course, there will
be times when it is acceptable to say no, but if you´re turning down a weekend of excitement with
classmates or your familiy there, you´re not taking advantage of your exchange. Part of the reason you
are living this adventure is to experience things. Say yes and you will not be disappointed.
45. What´s the writer doing in the text?

A. convincing people of the benefits to study foreign languages in France

B. warning exchange students about the culture shock they may deal with

C. informing students about what he learned after being in an exchange program

D. encouraging French people to discover what being an international student is like.

46. What can the reader find out about the writer in paragraph 1?

A. He had a good time studying high school in his hometown.

B. He ignored several issues about life in France before his arrival.

C. He had traveled abroad before his departure to France.

D. He had many unbelievable experiences during his stay in America.

47. In paragraph 2, when talking about his own language, the autor means that

A. speakers of other languages are quite rare.

B. learning a foreign language is considered unnecessary.

C. English is familiar to people from different nationalities.

D. English is rarely spoken if compared to other languages.

48. What makes life abroad different from life at home is

A. being surrounded by unkind strangers.

B. the new and surprising accommodations.

C. the habits you must change to get on with your new file.

D. the time it takes to have a friendly relationship with the homeowners.

49. The best title for this article could be

A. How to Handle your Life and Not Die in the Attempt

B. The Value of English Not All Intenational Students Realize

C. The Truth Nobody Told you About French Exchange Students

D. What No One Told you About Going on a Foreign Exchange Program

I´LL BE A NURSE

Part 5
I´m Alexa Smith and I´ve done lots of things, but I always dreamed of being a nurse. Nurses should
be quite kind, brave, and really nice with people. They must be careful with everything around them.
I´m like this, so I will be able to be the best nurse when I finish my studies and in a short time I will
earn money by doing something I like!

My wish to become a nurse comes from an experience as a teenager. When! was going to visit a friend,
who I met through Facebook, I got sick at the airport.
Thank God, they found an ambulance and took me to the hospital. A group of fantastic nurses looked
after me and I soon got better. Then, I only had to go to the drugstore for a few days. This awesome
time at the hospital encouraged me to become a nurse.

At university, we study hospital vocabulary, lots of health subjects and practice at

local hospitals. My classmates and I can easily see how nurses help people feel
less pain. These people are always glad and thanking them for their excellent
job. Nurses work all the time and spend, even their free time, learning how to
improve people´s lives. Soon, I hope to be ready to start my career in
this wonderful occupation.

THE BRITISH MUSEUM

Part 5
A wonderful event happened in 2009: The British Museum celebrated its 250th birthday. Since 1759, when it
opened, the museum has brought things from all over the world, wich are carefully kept and shown to the
public. These objects are from people around the world who have made them over the centuries. The first
exhibition was organized by Sir Hans Sloane, a doctor whose love for nature and art began when he spent
some lovely time in the West Indies, as he explains in his book about the history of Jamaica.

Sloane used most of his money on fantastic trips far from home where he got unusual objects for the museum.
He clearly wanted to make sure that, for a low Price, everybody could see what he thought were the most
wonderful things he collected from other countries. Today´s exhibition includes some of the most famous
objects from around the world. They´re organized in several huge rooms where visitors always look for
explanations with the latest information about those cultural groups and future events; sometimes visitors
must pay for special exhibitions.

The museum´s goals today are to be the center of international cultural studies and to teach people about
world cultures. To do this, there are interesting exhibitions and excellent courses on culture. University

I cannot remember a time when I was not involved in the sport of gymnastics. My mom used to exercise
a lot when she was pregnant with me, so you could say that it is in my blood! I love the challenge that
gymnastics offer. My coaches taught me the value of setting goals by writing them down and focusing
on bringing them to life. In my personal life, gymnastics has given me the essential support to practice
other sports, a love for fitness and physical activity, and a skill set that has allowed me to perform well
in school and in my professional life.

Nowadays, as a gym owner, I am inspired when I see that same feeling in someone else's eyes and
smiles that I once had when I practiced gymnastics. Besides keeping you active, gymnastics also makes
your body feel strong and enables you to do different things, such as keeping up with the everyday
challenges of living a fast life.

As it happens with other sports, gymnastics is a sport where you fall again and again and have to stand
up and continue. This sport teaches you the power of "I can do it. This means you need to work hard to
get what you want, but quitting is not an option. To do this, you need to be responsible, confident and
spend time doing something that is worth it. In general, gymnastics can bring different benefits for
your life, not only for your body but also for your personal development.

Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu means "old mountain" in Quechua, one of Peru's original languages.
Machu Picchu was just simply a regular part of nature until the Incas arrived in the
middle of the 15th century and turned it into a spiritual place for their kings. It was
found again in 1911, and one year later, international visitors began traveling to
Machu Picchu.

This place is about 75 kilometers to the north of Cuzco city. Nowadays, the journey
to Machu Picchu is very attractive for people who travel often, but it was this
mountain in the middle of the jungle which allowed the Incas to build places that
would not be found by people from other countries.

More than one thousand stairs opened the way to a special city made from rocks.
Machu Picchu had many beautiful places with bright colors for the Incas to spend
their time. Inca kings had guest houses where they kept their gold and jewelry.
They also had special cooks and people who cleaned for them. We don't know if
Machu Picchu was used as a temporary home or if it was a place where the Inca
kings lived permanently.
This amazing place combined several activities the Incas preferred, such as improving their communication and
growing food. They even used physics and mathematics to create amazing structures to water their plants. The
Incas were glad because their engineers studied to build a strong, safe and useful city.

and people who cleaned for them. We don't know if Machu Picchu was used as a temporary
home or if it was a place where the Inca kings lived permanently.

This amazing place combined several activities the Incas preferred, such as improving their communication and growing
food. They even used physics and mathematics to create amazing structures to water their plants. The Incas were glad
because their engineers studied to build a strong, safe and useful city.

A. pleased.

A Mom´s Wish for her Child
A Mom´s Wish for her Child
When my daughter was born, I started imagining all the events she would
have to live. While some moms dream of their child´s first day of preschool
or college, the most anticipated event for me has been the first time she´d
go off to overnight camp.

Overnight camp was the best thing happened to me and for 12 amazing
summers, I spent weeks away from my parents at a campsite. For the past
10 years, I´ve also had my dream job working with summer camps. Now it
has come time for my daughter to have this unique opportunity. I know her
time at camp Will be different from mine and I want her to create her own
experience, however, I do offer her these words for her time at camp and
for the rest of her life:
“My dear, I wish you get excited when you arrive at camp on the first day. It´s OK to feel a bit nervous,
but this will make you realize that you can get through hard days in life, too. You´ll also learn some things
about yourself and feel confident in your ability to make your own decisions. For this, it´s important to try
new things and be open to meeting new people; you´re going to find new role models, and you´ll learn that
there may be others who can be there for you besides me. I also hope you discover a love for nature and
have it stay with you forever.

Sometimes you´ll miss home, yet you´ll also cry on the last day because you won´t want to leave, and that´s
OK, I´ll be here waiting for you with open arms.”

C. She expects her daughter to go and work with her at camps.

D. She´s looking forward to having her parents visit her at work.

43. How does the writer want her daughter to feel about herself?

A. ashamed of the hard days she has lived.

B. frightened of the things she discovers in nature.

C. certain about her abilities to do things well.

D. fond of all the new people she will meet in her trip.

44. In paragraph 4, the sentence I´ll be here waiting for you with open arms means

A. the mom will welcome her daughter with love and happiness.

B. the daughter needs to hug her mom when she gets home.

C. the mom will cry at home while waiting for her daughter.

D. the daughter will knock on the door as soon as she arrives.

45. What reply message would the mother like to receive from her daughter?

A. Dear mom,
I really miss my home and family.
Could you please come and pick me up?
Love you!

B. Dear mom,
Camp is OK, but don´t like the other kids or the new food.
I hope these weeks go by really fast.
Love you!

C. Dear mom,
I´m really happy here at camp.
I have two new friends and I´ve learned many new things about nature.
Love you!

D. Dear mom,
Next summer, I would really like to go to a different place away from nature.
