Talk about your holidays

Zero conditional

Conditional sentences are logical constructions to talk about specific conditions and their
specific results: if present condition → present result.

PRESENT CONDITION = It is sunny

PRESENT RESULT = I go to the beach

In language, we express this idea in a zero conditional.

The grammatical construction is: if + present verb [comma] + present verb

If it’s sunny, I go to the beach.

The condition and result can be put in any order. In this case, no comma is needed.
The grammatical construction is: present verb + if + present verb

I go to the beach if it’s sunny.

We use the zero conditional to talk about real conditions and results in the general present,
like facts, general truths, and habits/routines:

If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.

When I go to France, I take the train.

First conditional

Conditional sentences are logical constructions to talk about specific conditions and their
specific results: if present/future condition → future result.

FUTURE RESULT = I’ll go on holiday next year

In language, we express this idea in a first conditional.

The grammatical construction is: if + present verb [comma] + future form + infinitive

If I have money, I’ll go on holiday next year.

The condition and result can be put in any order. In this case, no comma is needed:
The grammatical construction is: future form + infinitive + if + present verb

I’ll go on holiday next year if I have money.

We use the first conditional to talk about real present/future conditions and future results,
like predictions and intentions/plans:
