However, surface preparation by grinding or machining may be necessary where surface irregularities could mask indications due to discontinuities. * MURPHY ‘Doe Na Mow.ska0e-71-Me17.9R. MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING PROCEDURE 0008-00 Rew A Page tt of 25 TAD TA4 TAT Prior to magnetic particle examination, the surface to be examined and all adjacent areas within at least 1 inch (25mm) shall be dry and free of all dirt, grease, lint, scale, welding flux and spatter, oll or other extraneous matter that could interfere with the examination. If coatings are left on the part in the area being examined, it must be demonstrated that indications can be detected through the maximum coating thickness; otherwise the coating shall be removed. Cleaning may be accomplished using detergents, organic solvents, de-scaling solutions, paint removers, vapor degreasing, sand or grit blasting or ultrasonic cleaning methods. Quick drying contrast paint may be used at areas where insufficient contrast between background and magnetic particles exist ‘Surface examination shall include checking of any discontinuity surface openings which may not attract or hold magnetic particles because of their width. The shape and size of object to be examined are not limiting factors, provided the specified area under examination can be properly examined within the specified time intervals of this procedure. 7.2 Testing Coverage 7.24 7.22 Testing object requiring Magnetic Particle Testing shall be tested for their full area (100%) unless partial or spot testing is specified by Client. The surface shall be examined visually prior to any examination as to determine the suitability of the testing technique to be employed dices | — | ‘ee Na: MOM-SKO08-71-MEI7-PR. Pago 120128 73 74 75 7.2.3 Two separate examinations shall be performed in each area, with the lines of magnetic flux during which the second examination to be approximately 90° to those of the first examination. Magnetization 7.3.1 The magnetization shall be induced by a continuous magnetization of Alternating Current Electro-Magnetic Yoke. 7.3.2 The minimum poles spacing shall be 100mm and the maximum spacing shall be 200mm. 7.3.3. However, the time for each magnetization shall not be too long to avoid over heating of the yoke Particles Application 7.4.1 The Ferromagnetic Particles shall be lightly dusted or sprayed on the work piece whilst the Magnetic Flux is being induced. 7.4.2 Sufficient time shall be allowed for indications to ‘Build up’ before evaluation. Excess Particle Removal 7.5.1 Accumulation of excess magnetic particles in examination surfaces shall be removed by a light air stream or blow. | eer ee ‘Doc No MOWe-SK300-71-MEI7-PR- Page 130128, 8.0 9.0 7.5.2 For dry magnetic particles, accumulation of excess magnetic particles in examination surfaces shall be removed by a light air stream from a bulb or syringe or other source of low pressure dry air. 7.5.3 The magnetizing power shall be maintained while removing the excess magnetic particles. VIEWING a4 82 83 84 Each entire surface under examination shall be examined before proceeding to the next stage in the testing procedure and viewing shall be carried out after each excitation. Magnification of detail may be obtained by the use of low-power magnifier. Care shall be taken to ensure that Magnetic indications have been inspected and recorded, When viewing using color contrast inks or powder the area under examination shall be illuminated by daylight or artificial light to @ level of not less than 100 fe (1000 Ix) Viewing shall be such that the glare is avoided during inspection ‘When using fluorescent inks or powders, the area under examination shall be darkened and the inspection of the test surface shall be carried out under black light conditions, The minimum light level shall be 1000 HWiem? and shall be checked at least once every 8 hours or when the work station is changed INTERPRETATION OF INDICATIONS 94 Observation shall be made while applying the magnetic particle during magnetization process so that the indication may be reviewed before magnetic field diffusion occurs.
