Ballast Tanks: FPK, 1W to 7W and APK tank.

1. You will find that Soundings of the ballast tanks shown by the
pneumatic gauging system & the Manual soundings are different;
Reason: Manual sounding table takes into account the increased
distance to the bottom of tank due to various bends/curvature of the
pipe. Also both the Sensor and the bottom of the Sounding pipes in
most tanks are at least 5 cm height above tank top
The ballast system gauges are of the electro/pneumatic type with
submerged sensor

BWTS

MAKER: SAMSUNG HEAVY INDUSTRIES

MODEL: SP-100, 4000m3
1. The BTWS consist in two main treatment unit,
a. Electrolysis
b. Neutralization
The first treatment phase is filtration with fully automatic back flushing – The
Overboard requires to be kept open during ballast operations to allow the
back flush overboard. The principal function of the filter unit is removal of
suspended object such as large organisms, mud salt particles, organic and
inorganic particulates that could be included in sediment. The additional
purpose of filter unit is to ensure water quality for treatment efficiency of
electrolysis unit. Treatment of filter unit will be used only in up take
(ballasting) operations and any reject from the filter return to their point of
origin. Therefore, no new waste is produced from filter.
The Filters should be cleaned before any ballasting operation else you may
have issues due to clogging of same, which may result in continuous back
flush operations effecting the ballast capacity or even a complete shutdown.
The second phase treatment is with electrolysis unit;
The key rolls of electrolysis unit are: generating active substances, which are
kind of disinfectant, and injecting sufficient concentration of disinfectant in to
main stream of ballast water. The operation of this unit is only in ballasting
operation.
Neutralizing Unit
The neutralization agent is stored in a tank in foam room; during deballasting
if the residual oxidant concentration is more than 0.2 ppm the Neutralizing
agent is injected into the ballast water to neutralize same
If the BWTS was used for ballasting – The BWTS must be used for
deballasting to ensure that the residual oxidant is neutralized if required
The system control unit of BWTS controls the system valves, electrolysis, and
neutralization and filter unit and monitor the status of the system.
After Ballasting to prevent corrosion of the BWTS turn off rectifier – Then
after 1 minute stop the booster pump
During Deballasting, Operate BWTS in ballast mode for 2 mins to clear
system of untreated sea water
The TRO unit requires its buffer / indicator solutions to be replaced every
three months. Spare Solution is in CCR.

Very important: Vessel has only D-2 certificate (IBWMC) so in the case of
BWTS failure vessel has to fill form ‘Env 1a - BWTS Failure Reporting Form’
and through the Office ask from flag state exemption to use ballast system
as per D-1 Water Ballast Management method.
Also, Note that for transfer of FW in APK for tank cleaning or any other
purpose, flag stage permission is required through the office.
