needs to modernise, like in Britain or Germany, so Russia

6 Read page 176 of your textbook then complete the following tasks.

a Create a storyboard about Marxist theory. Use the captions below each box to help you draw a
storyboard sketch.
Marxist theory in four easy steps!

History is dominated by class struggle. First, the middle class takes control from the monarchy.

Next, the workers or proletariat would overthrow the capitalist middle class by revolution.

The Communist Party would set up a dictatorship and own all industry to create equality – socialism.

Finally, once everyone is equal, the government would disappear and people would live in peace.

Pyotr Stolypin’s reforms produced astounding results within a few years. Between 1906 and
1915, thanks to the efforts of Stolypin’s farmers, the productivity of crops nationwide grew
by 14 percent, in Siberia by 25 percent. In 1912, Russia’s grain exports exceeded by 30
percent those of Argentina, the United States and Canada combined.

and the abdication of the Tsar. Add the correct dates, using page 185 of your textbook to help you.

Tsar Nicholas II abdicates the

throne and a Provisional
Government takes over.

Strikes break out and spread

quickly, some supported by the
army.

250,000 workers are on strike –

the Duma sets up a Provisional
Committee to take over.

The Tsar orders his army to

crush the strikers – they refuse
and some join in the strike,
others shoot their officers.

Revolutionaries set up the

Petrograd Soviet to undermine
the army leadership and
organise the soldiers.

The Putilov steelworkers’

strike is joined by thousands of
women on International
Women’s Day.
