Data handling is a source-based single-sitting assessment task, where learners
engage with and analyse data. (Abridged Section 4 Amendment of the CAPS
document for Tourism.

Every Grade 11 Tourism teacher is expected to draw up a marking guideline. Please

better prepare your learners for the task BEFORE the scheduled assessment
session takes place.
LEARNER INSTRUCTIONS
Study each question and follow the instructions to complete the task within the
prescribed time of ONE period under controlled conditions.
Overview:
You have been tasked by RETOSA and SA Tourism to compile statistics for an
annual report which will be used by UNWTO to understand the status of tourism in
Southern Africa.
QUESTION 1
Percentage distribution of tourists by region of residence and mode of travel:
January 2023.
1.1 Compare or differentiate between the meaning of “SADC” and “other
African “countries in relation to South Africa.

1.2. Identify and THREE SADC countries who would make up the 0.1% of tourists
who arrive in South Africa by sea.

1.3. Discuss THREE reasons why a majority (618065) of SADC tourists enter South
Africa by road while only fewer (882) tourists from “Other African” countries enter

1.4. Study the information below and answer the questions that follow.
1.4.1. Identify TWO countries which are landlocked (one fully and another
partially)
by South African land. (2)
1.4.2. Suggest ONE reason why the number of tourists from Zimbabwe has
remained consistently high over the 2022-2023 period. (2)

Study the information below and answer the questions that follow
2.1. Identify the TWO most popular purpose for visitors to KZN. (2)
2.2. Suggest TWO reasons business shopping and business traveller is so high

2.3.KZN “Holiday tourists” are often dominated by the New Horizon category of
domestic tourism.
a. Explain why KZN is a suitable province for this category of tourists. (2)
b. Identify TWO attractions/ activities that would suit cultural tourists. (2)
2.4. Discuss the trend in percentage basis point change for the highlighted
area. Provide a possible reason for this trend. (2)
2.5. Use the information from Share Q2 (Row 1) to draw a pie chart. Use
the criteria below when compiling your pie chart.
• Organise and present the data above in a pie chart to show the
