Elasticity
Math problem from Gias Uddin sir book
Example 9.1 to 9.5 = 6
9.14 to 9.17 = 3
Fluid mechanics
1. Water flows through a horizontal pipe line of varying cross-section. At a point where the
pressure of water is 0.05m of Hg the velocity of flow is 0.25 m/s. Calculate the pressure
at another point where the velocity of flow is 0.4 m/s.[ Density of water= 103 kg/m3 ; g=
9.8 m/sec2.]
2. Calculate the speed at which the velocity head of a stream of water is equal to 0.50m of
Hg.
3. Calculate the velocity of efflux of alcohol from a tall cylinder in which the total pressure
is 2 atmospheres (sp.gr. of alcohol 0/80).
4. A sealed storage tank contains water to a height of 25m. The air above the water inside
the tank has a gauge pressure of 4.5 atm. How fast will water flow out of a hole that is
located at the bottom the tank.

Math (DCM) (books)

1. A circular disc of mass 100 gm and radius 10 cm is making 120 rpm about an axis
passing through its centre and perpendicular to its plane. Calculate kinetic energy.
2. A solid sphere of radius 0.1 m and mass 2 kg rolls without slipping with a uniform
velocity of 0.2 m/s along a straight line on a horizontal surface. Calculate its Kinetic
energy.
3. A thin hallow cylinder open at both ends and weighing 10 kg (a) slides with a speed of 10
m/s without rotating (b) rolls with a speed of 10 m/s without slipping. Calculate the
kinetic energy of the cylinder in each case.
4. A flywheel of mass 100 kg and radius 0.5m makes 10 revolutions per second. Calculate
(i) angular velocity, (ii) moment of inertia and (iii) the energy of the flywheel. Assume
that the whole mass of the flywheel is concentrated at the rim.
5. A wheel and axle is made to rotate about a horizontal axis with the help of a bogy of
mass 5 kg attached to a string wound around the axle. The radius of the axle is 10 cm.
The body falls vertically through 5 metres in 10 seconds starting from rest. Calculate the
moment of inertia of the wheel and axle.
Viscosity
1. The absolute viscosity of a flowing fluid is 0.67 Ns/m2, if the density is 10 kg/m3.
Calculate its kinematic viscosity.
2. Calculate the mass of water flowing in 10 seconds through a horizontal capillary tube of
circular cross-section of radius 10-3 m. The tube is fitted at the bottom of a constant level
tank at a depth of 1 m. Length of the tube is 0.3142m, coefficient of viscosity of
water=10-3N-s/m2, density of water = 103 kg/m3.
3. Water is conveyed through a horizontal tube 0.08m in diameter and 4Km in length at the
rate of 20 liters per second. Assuming only viscous resistance, calculate the pressure
difference required to maintain the flow the flow. Viscosity of water = 10-3N-s/m2.

Surface tension
1. Calculate the excess pressure inside a soap bubble of radius 3×10-3 m. Surface tension of
soap solution is 20 ×10-3 N/m. Calculate also the surface energy of the soap-bobble.
2. What is the work done in blowing a soap bubble of radius 10 cm? What additional work
will be performed in further blowing it, so that its radius becomes 15 cm? T=30
dynes/cm.
3. In a capillary tube water rises to a height of 0.1 m. in the same capillary tube mercury is
depressed by 3.42×10-2m. Angle of contact for water and mercury are 0 and
135.Calculate the surface tension of mercury[ T for water is 72×10-3N/m and density of
Hg is 13.6×103kg/m3.
4. A liquid of density 1.05 gm/cc and angle of contact 20 has a vertical capillary tube of 2
mm diameter dipping into it. If the surface tension of the liquid be 235dynes/cm, find the
rise of the liquid in the capillary tube.
