Introduction
Sarita is 17 years old and is head over heels in love
with Binay, who is 22. Binay wishes for Sarita to
marry him before she completes her studies. Binay
has dropped out of college and Sarita is in high
school. Sarita is afraid that refusing to marry Binay
may cause a gap in their relationship, so she agrees
to marry him.
Problem Analysis
The core problem in this scenario is that there is a
power imbalance in this relationship due to the age
gap. Binay, as a 22 year old holds more mental
power over sarita and this is the reason sarita is
worried about their relationship if she does not
comply.
Questionnaire
What can go wrong if Sarita marries Binay?
With her being a minor still, and Binay, an adult, this is already
wrong because there is a 5 years age gap between them.
Marrying means she will have to have children in early age,
with no secure financial support from anyone other than the
two parents. She will have to drop out of school and if she
refuses to give birth to children after this marriage and put off
the idea for some time, Binay and his family might get upset
and seeing this as it is already an early marriage and between
two people with a huge age gap, things might not go
smoothly for sarita.
What are some of the things that might
happen if Sarita refuses to marry Binay?
There might be a rift between the two if she decides not to
marry him but that will be for her own good. Going into a
marriage not fully certain and prepared at such a young age
can be harmful for her. She will be able to go to college and
get her education. And as she is still 17 she will be considered
a minor and will be marrying an adult man who is 22 so
refusing the marriage will be a the suitable option for her.
Which of Sarita’s rights are at stake in case she
decides to marry Binay?
Child marriage violates many human rights including:
● Right to education
● Freedom from violence
● Freedom of choice
● Reproductive rights
● Access to reproductive and sexual health care,
● Freedom of movement, and
● The right to consensual marriage
Conclusion
The huge age gap between Sarita and Binay may promote many problems in
their life, and Sarita choosing to marry Binay is like adding insult to injury. This
story is one of many stories seen in Nepal. Although Child marriage is illegal,
there are many ways in which adults keep their relationship with someone
underage. Such as through dating. Mostly young girls. Since our society gives
so much freedom to the male being the older one in the relationship, the
males think it is okay to date young underage girls. The male dominant society
of ours is the major reason these relationships are formed; alongside illiteracy
and the society they grew up in. We need to spread awareness against things
that promote underage dating and try to dismantle the patriarchy overall in
order for events like these to stop.
Thankyou!
