Introduction to Microgrids
What is Microgrid?

It is a small-scale power supply network that is designed to provide

power for a small community .

It enables local power generation for local loads.

It comprises of various small power generating sources that makes it

highly flexible and efficient.

Size of the microgrid may range from housing estate to municipal regions

Microgrid Operating Modes

Grid Connected Mode

Utility grid is active.

Static switch is closed.

All the feeders are being

supplied by utility grid.
Microgrid Operating Modes

Island Mode

Utility grid is not supplying

power.

Static switch is open.

Feeder A,B,C are being

supplied by Microsources .

Feeder D is dead .
The Need Of Microgrid

It could be the answer to our energy crisis.

It is conected to both the local generating units as well as utility

grid thus preventing power outrageous.

Transmission losses gets highly reduced .

Provide high quality and reliable energy supply to crtitical loads.

Large land use impacts are avoided.

CO2 emmissions are reduced.

Conventional Grid vs. Microgrid

Conventional grid is very less efficient as compared to

microgrids.

A large amount of heat is emmited due to which energy is

wasted.

The power sources in microgrids which are microsources are

smaller in size and near to the load .
Advantages Of Microgrids

The major advantage of microgrid is that it isolates itself from

the utility grid during some disturbance and maintain the flow of
energy within itself.

As the generators don't emit CO2 , it causes zero harm to the

environment.

As the generators are in close proximity to the user, there is very

less loss of energy thus increasing the energy efficiency of the
grid .

As the energy is generated using renewable sources , microgrids

can be used to meet the need of energy at very cheap cost.
Disdvantages Of Microgrids

Microgrid protection is one of the most important challenges

facing the implementation of Microgrids.

Electical energy needs to be stored in battery banks thus

requiring more spaces.

Resynchronisation with utility grid is difficult .

Voltage ,frequancy, power quality are three major parameters

that must be controlled to acceptable standards whilst the
power and energy is maintained.
Future Directions Of Microgrids

Microgrids provide everything from greater reliability and

resilience to cleaner power and economic development.

As they grow in number and complexity, microgrids will require

sophisticated digital automation and smart management in
order to become reliable alternatives to the conventional grid.

Fortunately, advancements in information technology such as

the Internet of Things (IoT) enable automated energy
management
Future Directions Of Microgrids

Nearly 2,000 microgrids are currently operating in the United

States alone. According to Navigant Research, about 500 new
microgrid projects have been deployed around the world within
the last six months. Microgrids are shaping up to be the next
frontier in electrical engineering.

Several companies are incorporating biogas as a means of fueling

their on-site microgrids in order to help reduce their carbon
footprint as well as cut back on their energy costs.
