Mixed Method
According to Nova Southeastern University, a mixed method is described as an
approach for collecting, examining, and mixing the two approaches (quantitative and qualitative)
in a single study, with the objective of understanding the research problem. In this sense,
Harvard Catalyst (2021) mentions that this approach allows to researchers to use different types
of thinking: inductive and deductive, not exclusively from a type of research, also make a better
interpretation of a data, that the quantitative date would be more understandable, so it could
lead to an integration of the data.
The integration of the data is not only having quantitative and qualitative data, information, or an
individual analysis of it. It means to bring together the activities of each method for obtaining a
better insight (Harvard Catalyst, 2021). For example, in research some quantitative results could
need a deep explanation of these or according to a qualitative results researcher could design a
new instrument for the measurement of quantitative data. Therefore, for an effective design, it is
necessary to have a great knowledge and understand these two approaches.
The considerations for choosing a mixed method are various. The principal one is what
researcher want to know and what methods and data of each approach he/she will use.
Researcher must consider that this method provides different and multiple perspectives of the
problem, and objective and subjective point of view, a deeper understanding of the statics and
the measurement of the data will be according to the context. And that if the research is not
enough with only one approach.
But by the other hand, Fabregues et at. (2021) make a criticism about the mixed method in
research. Fabregues mentions that this type of method has been wide used in disciplines from
the social to the behavioral ones and even this method has launched an own journal, textbooks,
and articles (2021). But there isn’t a consensus about what is a mixed method. Because mostly
of the literature mentions that is the combination of one qualitative and quantitative method but
also researcher could use more of two methods. And into the mixed method the concepts are
still unclear.
Therefore, the mixed method is not only doing quantitative and qualitative research separately
and then get together. It implies the use of methods and instrument from both approaches for
trying to answer the research question.
